Embarrassed to call myself a vol

Vader, I stopped by Jacks Creek BBQ last week on the back from the river. Thought about you and wondered what you were up too now

I've had to do damage control before.
I've had to help others in difficult business p.r. situations.

Yes, what Butch did yesterday is from one playbook.
If you don't like a question, attack the questioner.
Going into what he thinks the role of the media should be has been done before. Often it's successful.
Saban does it all the time.
But, Butch isn't Saban.
I'm not just talking about wins/losses.
Butch is a much nicer guy.
Saban is a lifeless, emotionless, jerk.
Butch doesn't like insulting people.
He's not comfortable doing it and that shows.
That's why this strategy wasn't a good one, in this instance.

I would much rather that Butch had responded this way to the rumored question about an internal situation on the team.
"Guys, I appreciate all of the tremendous interest in Tennessee football. That is one of the many reasons why we are one of the greatest programs in the country and one of the many reasons that I'm proud to be the Coach here. And, I really appreciate that interest from all of our fans and media that cover us. But, there are instances that I just don't think that I should talk about certain situations. This involved an internal team matter and was handled internally. Go Vols." (Smile, drop mike, walk away).

Short, sweet, direct, non-combative.

I think that is great advice and a perfect response but as you have mentioned in your back ground, you know that it is much harder to come out with the perfect response on the spot under fire at a press conference. Sometime even when you have prepared a response, it doesn't always come out just like you would like.

What you must understand was what brought on this statement. (even if it was true, which I doubt) D. Crockett was much less than the high flying hero history (or myth) portrays him to be. What you must look at are the real reasons he kept moving from place to place.

Looking for his lost charts?

Coach?

Anyone who complains about what is said by "their" fans on social media does not understand how it is being used. Coaches/Fans create fake accounts for their team and for the team(s) that are recruiting the player(s) they want. Then they can send crazy messages from the other team's "fans" and support from their "fans". They then can use these posts as a negative/positive recruiting tool.

I never thought I would have to say I am embarrassed to call myself a vol fan.

What does it mean to be a volunteer? Think about it for a minute. Where did the name come from? Would Dave Crocket spew insults at anyone the way people do on this board. I don't think so.

Social media doesn't give you a license to insult anyone. It just lets cowards hidding behind a fake identity feel empowered.

For gods sake have some class. If you wouldn't say it face to face then don't say it here. If you your going to insult someone put in your name and address so they can discuss it with you.

Stop misrepresenting facts. Just because our news media has lost all integrity doesn't mean everyone has to start making up there own facts.

Have some respect for the players and coaches, they are putting their best foot forward. You can offer criticism without offending. Name calling is just childish.

Now watch my point be proven be the trashing below.

While I agree with you about not bashing the players, they are just kids (some very large kids) playing a game we all love. Yes fans are passionate about football and sometimes express frustration at an unexpected result.

However blaming the media for this is not entirely correct, it is society in general now. One side says we all need a trophy while absolutely doing nothing to accomplish it, while the other side calls everything "fake news" that they don't agree with and spews maniacal nonsense several times a day in 140 characters or less.

Bottom line, you make 4 mil a year, you are a grown man, put on your big boy pants and take responsibility. Everyone wants it both ways now, I am a snowflake, sensitive to the least bit of criticism and on the other hand I am morally superior to everyone and a everyone who disagrees with me is unpatriotic and un american.

Sports is supposed to be our common ground, especially football, specifically in the South college ball. You have followed the team your whole life, went to school there, plan your wedding and major life events around away games (not during the game mind you). Folks have the right to spout off a little, so take the moral superiority down a notch.

Sorry for the rant, but really tired of folks telling me how to react or feel. You are free to make your own decisions and life choices, don't tell me how to do mine. It's football for god sakes. You have men making millions coaching kids, if they don't like a little criticism for a job poorly done, get a new job.

I have taken so long about this I kind of forgot why this pissed me off. Anyone in the ATL up for a beer I am game. Go Vols. UGA sucks.

Absolutely agree with the point of leave the players the hell alone.

The coaching staff however is paid to do a job and part of that job is to deal with public criticism. It's that way anywhere in the country, it's not just associated with Tennessee.

Media? A lot has changed since the three years I worked media from 1974-1977...my wife is now a retired journalist and is totally embarrassed at what the media has become.... and it's not just "evening" news outlets anymore. Sports media has become so bogus it's beyond belief. I NEVER watch anything other than a game or two (most always Vols) on ESPN. But there's still people out there (had an uncomfortable discussion today with a man who has swallowed everything MSNBC and CNN are serving up and it's sickening) who believe if it's on TV it's true. So CBJ has EVERY right to scold the media. Saban did it last week humiliating a young sports reporter. By the way you won't see him doing it to a "respected" reporter because of the blow back. And the report I saw laughed at that "ole Saban boy". But let Butch do it and he's hiding Watergate. Yeah I know. Win like Saban and you can blaspheme the pope, if that's possible. Not Catholic here. This world is in a massive mess everywhere and we can no longer escape to sports for a break....sad but true...

But but but the pumpers keep saying CBJ can't go out there and run/pass/catch the ball hisself, its the players' mistakes, and not his own.

Which could it be?? :search:

Players absolutely make mistakes. It's the staffs job to prepare and put those that minimize those mistakes and put the players in a position to maximize their potential for success. Throwing the ball on the one on the road with a young QB isn't putting the QB nor the team around him in the best position to be successful. Larry Scott hasn't done much to put either QB in a position to be successful.

Is this iambic pentameter?

I never thought I would have to say I am embarrassed to call myself a vol fan.

Pride and embarrassment are two sides of the same worthless coin. Just model the behavior you'd have others follow because none of what anyone else does reflects on you.

That includes wins and losses on the field.

So, no more whining and complaining about the quarterbacks? What about the kickers?

Just Go Vols and Fire Butch is allowed?

I don't agree with some of what he does but he puts a whole lot of money into UT. Do you really expect he shouldn't have any say into who UT hires?

Should he have the only/final say?

It's our state school not his personal semi-pro team.

A few issues here, first the media didn't report the Shy Tuttle injury they simply inquired about it and Butch blew up. So that told me all I needed to know about the situation.

Are the players really putting their best foot forward? Because judging by the body language and the actions on the sideline Saturday I would argue the opposite and take a step further to say this team doesn't believe in Butch Jones or his system.

I will agree with you that going on Social Media to lash out at a 20 year old because your football team isn't any good is childish and dumb. But all fan bases have these types.

People are mad and no one should tell them how to feel, several are financially invested in this football program through donations and season tickets. The average cost of season tickets for a family of four hovers around 4K and for some families thats some hard earned money. So when the product being put on the field isn't living up to expectations that makes them angry as it should. But that in no way gives them the right to lash out to players, you might just find yourself falling on a football helmet.

All the right words...that about sums it up...
