All of the students received this email today in regards to the Florida game:

Dear Students,

We all know that it's great to be a Tennessee Vol, but our behavior should always reflect the Volunteer spirit. That spirit is about civility and respect. At Saturday's game against Florida, there were chants from the student section that were totally unacceptable. Win or lose, we must respect our opponents, demonstrate class, and always show pride for our great university. As Volunteers, we are better than that and our expectation is that this kind of behavior will never happen again.

Sincerely,

Jimmy G. Cheek, Chancellor
Dave Hart, Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics
Vince Carilli, Vice Chancellor for Student Life

More of a reflection of our society in general and the fact that civility has gone down the tubes. Didn't like having to try and explain to my 6 year old what that chant meant at the game.

I honestly don't get your point. Was with my 6 year old also. Not that big a deal to explain to him people behave poorly sometimes.

Chant showed a complete lack of class from a fan base that behaved like the 10-year losers that they are. UT fans should show much more class than that. No excuses.

I was at the game and was embarrassed by the chant. However, at the same time, they just were chanting what we all feel. I hate Florida more than bama but the chant was classless and something I would rather forget. I feel bad for the parents that had their children at the game or were watching on TV. This is coming from a 23 year old college student at Missy St who was born and raised to bleed orange.

Dear Mr. Cheek,
The students of the University of Tennessee offers it's sincere apology regarding this egregious act. We feel that you should resign in protest of this appalling lack of sportsmanship.

The chant was dumb and immature; and it is also done across the country every week at different schools. Boys will be boys. I was more offended and disappointed that 90% of our players rushed off to the locker room after the game without shaking hands with the Gators. The only players I saw out there shaking hands were Aj and Sutton.

As for Cheek, he needs to focus his attention on more important things. I will bet that he had many of his Florida chronies in his President's Suite and was embarrassed in front of his buddies when the chant started. He needs to get over himself - his pathetic, self serving letter is only going to further drive a wedge between himself and the student body.

Florida fans / players / coaches are the worst trash in collegiate sports, by quite a bit. I'm sure they've heard worse. They probably thought the chant was mild.

Yea this email will really go a long way in preventing this from happening again. He's going to love the Alabama game when the student section starts a stadium wide f u Kiffin chant. There is literally nothing he can do to stop us from using this chant. Good try though Cheek trying to tell 17000 grown students that pay a lot of money to attend UT what they can't say at football games.

Also it's rich that Cheek, a UF alumni is lecturing us on civility when this chant was inspired by the UF players running up to our wall and flipping us off as they were running out the clock. Guess the Florida alumni who runs our school decided to leave out that convienent fact.

My whole 2:30 class laughed at the email when we all got it. And yes, read in a post above, I probably will leave Neyland shoeless after kiffin comes if you catch my drift.

And complaining on this message board isn't going to change the class of our fanbase or our student section. Likely nothing will. I"m thankful we're not good losers and we're good enough fans to still sell out games and still support this team.

It's really incredible how he just doesn't get it. All this email does is add fuel to fire and will make the FU chants even louder during the Alabama game. Keep raising our tuition though Jimmy and reward yourself with a nice raise like you always do.

Someone posted earlier in another thread that the students are already planning to do something just to spite him.

I don't think it's like an organized thing here but obviously no one likes Cheek and yeah he's right, it's adding fuel to the fire for more motivation to chant.

The guy said it was spreading on Yik-Yak. Again, no idea how true that is, but it wouldn't surprise me.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did. Seriously, did he believe that several thousand young adults will suddenly comply to his request?

Well I wish you wouldn't for a lot of different reasons. I understand exactly what you are saying. It sort of bows your back up and makes you stubborn hearing Cheek lecture you. And yes, I had heard that the FL players were the instigaters and the chant was a response...do not know if true, not in that section. I'm still mad UT started charging students for tickets. And also understand that is a reason you don't want to listen to Cheek: pay for tickets, increase in tuition, terrible administrative decision making, lack of respect, etc. But please remember you represent the university, state, alumni, and fans. Have fun, be safe, and Go Vols.

I agree. Idk if you were at the game or if you're a student or whatever. But when Florida first came out we chanted the same thing it just wasn't as loud. Wait til Bama comes out though, I hope it's an FU Kiffin chant.
