Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

As usual with these games most of my time has been spent exploring and doing no quests.

I did finish the Companions main quest line, almost done with Winterhold College.

after the dashboard update, my character was deleted. So I'm starting over from scratch. Greaaaaaaaaaaaat...

It seems as if I have hit a little bit of a wall with this game. I'm going to lay off of it for a while before resuming. So far I have put in about 75 hours. I still haven't completed the main quest, I probably am not very far in it either.

I hit my wall at about 20 hours.... (ADD)

I'm only good at keeping with online FPS games it seems, because they're social and you only have to focus for 15 minutes at a time.

The main quest on this game is apparently surprisingly short. You may be closer to the end than you think.

I've had to give up playing because I was borrowing my roommate's copy. I think I'm getting it for Christmas so I can't exactly go out and buy it right now, either.

I'm kind of running out of steam on this one, too. Don't get me wrong, its fantastic, but to be perfectly honest, I think the quests/storylines in Oblivion are far superior to Skyrim's. For a game with such an expansive, beautiful landscape, why do you have to spend so much quest time playing in caves?

its a mountainous landscape so I understand the heavy use of caves....But I get what you are saying. They really beat you over the head with caves in this one.

You almost have to have a lot of caves just so they can seperate the missions. If you didnt have caves you would have to lay all of these quests out on the main map which would probably double the size of the map and cause a lot of developer type problems.

You could do entrances through "passes" and have places that are accessible only through these entrances and the missions occur in valleys or mountain tops that are otherwise inaccessible... just a thought.

Don't try complaining about adventuring in Dwemer ruins or ancient Nordic crypts :p They're pretty badass, and for the most part, completely optional. A lot of the game is tied into the history of Skyrim, which is buried in these ruins (obviously)

IMO, this is how it plays out

Warrior-esque guild: Skyrim
Thieves Guild: Oblivion, but Skyrim's has a pretty sweet twist

Mages Guild: Skyrim
Dark Brotherhood: Tie

And Skyrim has the sweet civil war questline which is far superior to Oblivion's arena IMO.

The main quest, I'd give to Skyrim. It was much more interesting and fun, and less "busy work". An evil badass dragon won't wait forever in destroying the world, ya know. No need to make it longer than 20 hours worth of gameplay in that aspect.

Skyrim is far superior to Oblivion, IMO.

IMO, JMO, HIJKLMNOP, ETC ETC

OW: That's a very good point.
iV4L: I'd give Oblivion the edge on Dark Brotherhood, but yes, Skyrim is the superior game in most aspects. I just think the a lot of the quest plots are unimaginative and Skyrim's NPCs are very dull.

Just a note to anyone reading this banter, this game is fantastic and I love it and I have logged a lot of hours just as I have for every TES game. Don't be discouraged in any way. Its great, just buy it.

Personally, I think a lot of the current flaws will be solved in TES VI. The hardware they're dealing with is ridiculously outdated (consoles) and having to cater to the majority makes it difficult to implement a lot of things, I'm sure. I agree that a lot of the quests seem emotionless, in a sense. The NPCs are improved upon from Oblivion, and as long as Bethesda continues to makes strides, it's fine by me. The AI path-finding needs to be improved greatly as well. The bugs are absolutely hilarious.

The reason I gave Skyrim's dark brotherhood the edge over Oblivion's is (MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD) that the quest where you kill the emperor but are betrayed by Astrid who was betrayed by the Imperials was absolutely stunning. Then you get to kill the REAL emperor? Epic. Also, at the beginning of the quest-line, when you're in that abandoned barn or whatever it was, you have the option of killing Astrid, which gives you a quest named "Destroy the Dark Brotherhood". Easy quest, lots of fun. Great reward. (5k Gold for me)

Agree with that mostly, but the day to day assasinations were a lot cooler in Oblivion. Especially the one where you have to sneak into that house, avoid the guards and then get the deer head to fall on that guy so it looks like an accident. That was just cool.

The whole betrayal/skinning of Lachance was pretty wrenching as well.

I still say that "Whodunit?" is one of the best quests in RPG history.

The main problem with the Skyrim questlines is their brevity. Although they do give you more stuff to do after they've been completed.

For a TES game, they are too short. Still, they're pretty sweet.
