Edward Snowden: American Hero

I think a point that you and 88 are missing is that I don't think the NSA was acting constitutionally

The point 88 was making is something like this: Congress is charged with oversight and they write the rules. Then they look the other way. The less they know, the better.

Then the NSA basically oversees itself. They reveal to congress what they want them to know.

Nothing changes unless the people push back. We don't push back unless Edward Snowden dimes on the government.

Who says it has? Anyway, that's a separate issue from Snowden stealing thousands of documents and taking them to China, then Russia.

Yeah, I'm suspicious of how much they've really mended their ways, but it's clear there has been some impact. Like Ds and Rand Paul conspiring to let the PATRIOT Act expire. Congress looked bad for lack of oversight. That's gonna bring about some change.

The fact that Rand Paul is such a viable candidate is an indicator of how important Snowden's revelations have been in the court of public opinion.

Without this evidence, his government spying talk would have looked loony to many.

Check the bill of rights. It guarantees your right to privacy.

Not what i was saying, you said we had the right to know everything our government is doing. And that doesn't hold in the Constitution. again not that i know of.

the 4th I am guessing you are referring to? Search and seizure, that would definitely make the spying an illegal thing, good thing none of us are saying the spying should still go on or that the people shouldn't be punished. this is a thread about snowden and his actions.

I don't think we have a right to know everything. I think we have a right to know when they've violated our rights.

Do you think the majority of citizens were surprised the government is spying on us?

I certainly am not. I just wonder how many nations are spying on our businesses. We know China has been doing a little snooping around. Who else is?

I don't even know if the majority knows who Snowden is.

What seems obvious now wasn't so obvious 5 years ago.

Spying devices would all be in the United States. Encryptions were all most likely changed as soon as he went public. And since this is the NSA all surveillance equipment should be in the United States only, and honestly it should all be removed.

Sub locations? Why would the NSA have subs? And safe houses for what?

I think you've read too many Tom Clancy books.

What am I naive about?

The fact that you come across as not knowing exactly what the NSA does, other than spy on Americans. The NSA is our country's largest Intelligence organization. They specialize in electronic surveillance all over the world. We are constantly gathering intelligence by using submarines and other vessels, as well planting surveillance devises in places all over the world. Why you think that this is some Tom Clancy work of fiction is beyond me.

It's so stupid to say he's cowardly for running. Anybody with half a brain would run. There is nothing brave about staying on a sinking ship. It would be pure stupidity.

He ran straight into the open arms of our enemy. Then proceeded to use his info to secure his safety. He's a sell out and a POS

And we're the conspiracy theorist here. I think some of them believe the Russians are going to invade the U.S. Red Dawn style thanks to Snowden.

And you're a simpleton that treats issues like this as if they're a game of checkers. Nobody is saying we're concerned about an invasion, but I am concerned that the bastard gave our enemy classified information that could be harmful to US interests or operatives.... Can you grasp that?

So you're overstating the impact he has had on the supposed political reforms (which are also overstated).

Snoopers gonna snoop.

I don't think so. Snowden's revelations went far and beyond anything we had evidence of. Also, the magnitude of the story helped. Prior revelations were back page stories. People thought they were looking for terrorists and accidentally spying on innocents. Snowden made it clear they purposely collected data on innocents.
