Educate me on Dooley?

I know he was the head coach for LA Tech. ESPN just said he's an intense, fiery coach.

He was with LSU from 2000-2004, as the TE coach, RB coach, ST coach, and Recruiting coordinator (according to wikipedia). That's a good start.

Here are my questions:

How good of a recruiter is he? I know it's tough to lure top athletes to LATech (obviously), but does anyone think he'll be able to recruit with Florida and Georgia?

He's an offensive-minded guy, but what kind of offense did he run? Pass heavy? Run heavy? Option BS? And what do we do about our Defense?

Any answers?

Derek Dooley -- he is 17-20 in three seasons at Louisiana Tech with a 12-12 record in the WAC --- and this is the AD's choice for a coach to lead an SEC team????

His dad is Vince -- former GA coach and longtime AD.

TN should have looked at Bama -- Mike Shula was not Don Shula just like Derek Dooley is not Vince Dooley..........and we saw how well that experiment worked at Bama.

Mike Shula had been a f&*%up everywhere he'd been a coach before Alabama hired him. He got the job because he was Don Shula's son, he was a former Alabama QB, and he was available.

Derek Dooley, I'm sure, got his foot in the door because of his last name. But he's also had a lot of success as a coach. He's actually accomplished more than either one of the Shula boys, or Monte Kiffin's son, for that matter.

He wasn't anybody's choice at UT, but let's give him a chance to succeed or fail on his own merits. He knows what he's getting into.

He's on stage right now as a HC -- and not had success.

Having success as receivers coach or special teams coach is not the same as having success as the HC..............which for the last few years that is the stage he has been on -- so far he has been hardly anywhere successful as a HC.

Right. Nothing says success like a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 conference record within the WAC.

I will say this about LA Tech. They do play some pretty good teams. Just this year they played Auburn, LSU and Boise State. They only lost to LSU by 8 and Boise St. by 10 and this was a rebuilding year after they went 8-5 winning their bowl game.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the 17-20 record over 3 seasons, but I think the guy has potential. I'm sure he wasn't loaded with lots of talent on the LA Tech team. I do believe he will be a good recruiter and surround himself with good coaches. He was recruiting coordinator at LSU under Saban and should have some good recruiting ties to Louisiana.

Good interview on SA this afternoon with the Fox sports director in Ruston. He says this guy is a very good coach, great CEO, and LaTech is broken up over this because Dooley was expected to go 9-3 or 10-2 this next season. Dooley is said to be a very honorable guy (won't that be refreshing!), and has history in the SEC family. He was also recommended by Nick Satan, for what that's worth.

The indication was that he would retain Kippy, Cheney, and LT. I believe Hammy wanted that badly.

at latech! Yea, he worked for Saban, but so have a lot of people. Yes, he had success as a recruiting coordinator for Saban at LSU, but c'mon: my grandmother could recruit for LSU--it's one of the top three states in the country for football talent. Not a terribly impressive track record, really. I'm curious to know how he was even on our radar, frankly. Who sold Hammy on this guy?

Allison Dooley, the anti-Layla. Smart enough to be a doctor and name a son Peyton.

Derek is married to Dr. Allison Jeffers Dooley, a practicing OBGYN at the Woman's Clinic of Ruston. The couple has two sons, John Taylor (10) and Peyton (7), and a daughter, Julianna (5). Allison organized and spearheads "Bulldogs Tackling Breast Cancer," an annual fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Better coach and person than Lane Kiffin (no disrespect to Monty) equally good at recruiting. DEFINITELY most respected football coach in Louisiana.

At first, I wasn't excited about this guy at all. I've been looking at his resume, however, and I think this may be a pretty good hire.

I'm willing to give him a shot. He's been in the SEC before, and I think he may be able to handle himself especially with a solid staff. The only question is whether or not he will bolt for UGA- which I don't think he will.

looking at his bio at LT, I would hire the guy to run my company. It looks like he has a solid plan down not smoke and mirrors like the last guy.

Looking at his bio and the team's improvement from 2006-08, I think I can support him. I haven't seen the 2009 record though.

I told my wife lets find a coach, sign recruits, and get to spring practice!!

Okay Derek Dooley is not a household name in the fan'dom so I will make a few comments about him. First I don't think this is a bad hire, I think it is a very good if not outstanding hire. One thing I like about the hire is that those coaches who stayed LOYAL to the vols are reportedly going to be able to keep their jobs. Second Dooley is very passionate about football and teaching by all accounts. His record is a little deceiving because he took over a program that was the laughing stock of Division 1 (I still call it Div 1 and probably will until my death!) and took them to a bowl win in 2008. He did that with no big name players and with no big time facilities!
Further he has a work ethic like no other. LA Tech is simply devastated he is leaving. So many people look at his 2009-10 record and make fun of him. However, if you are careful you see a couple of things. One he lost several of his top players to injury early in the season and still had a respectable showing against teams that had much better athletes. He lost to great teams like Auburn, Navy, Nevada, Boise State, LSU & Fresno State all of which were bowl teams. Look I understand that the Vol Nation expected a huge name to come to UT take over, but look what happened the last time we went that route, Lane Kiffin! I say let’s give the guy a chance and reward the guys who were loyal Vols and stayed.
