I always felt that he didn't let Sanders have full control calling the plays. Even before he "resigned" halfway through the season I felt that Fulmer was holding him back and then allowed fans/media beat him for it. I just remember Taylor being PO for not being promoted and that's why he left.

All the what ifs.... What would have happened if Fulmer would have promoted Trooper Taylor as OC instead of bringing in Clawson. Would things have been different? I personally didn't think he was that great of a coach. Sure he could yell and scream and jump high not to mention give great chest bumps but none of the positions he coached reached beyond expectations. (Sorry guys-brain lock)

One of several major flaws with Fulmer was that he could not recognize coaching talent. In eighteen years he had five OL coaches, a position he played and coached himself.

I don't see why anybody at UT would bag on Trooper, especially at his positions not performing.

He coached running backs in 2004, Riggs and Houston both ran for 1000 yards.
In 2006 he coached receivers and Meachem, who had underachieved to then, became an AA.

Idk about his ability as an OC, but dude can coach positions.

Recruiting and coaching are two different entities.

1st of all, we were in the sec champ game the year before fulmer got canned. We looked solid vs lsu but our qb wasn't having a good game and kept getting picked. Had we won that game, we would ended up in a bcs bowl. Fulmer would have possibly got better candidates as an oc. That new oc would have recruited well for fulmer, and we would have atleast made it to a bowl game that yr with anybody besides clawson running the offense. It would have Bern a rebuilding year but making a bowl and not getting blown out like we did that year would have gotten fulmer another yr. PLUS, had fulmer beat lsu the year before in the champ game he woulda got an extension in contract for accomplishing winning sec title and making bcs bowl...

I know fulmer is not nick saban by any means. But, isn't it crazy to think that if we would have protected the lead in the sec champ game that year... It would be totally different.

I agree with this poster.... Never did see Trooper as that good (or great) of a coach. I mean, if he really was that good then the Houston/Riggs backfield would have AT LEAST been equivalent to the Cobb/Webb or Hayden/Garner tandems. I know, I know they both had 1000 yard seasons but with the holes they had should've had more! Both ran "scurred" thus ran to get tackled. Never will forget the SECCG when Riggs broke it, only one man to beat and ran straight into him head up. Did Tayler just not develop the talent or was the running back class of 01 and 02 just busts?

not sure if youre saying promoting trooper wouldve been a good thing or not. I seem to remember him doing a good job with receivers and rb's the year before.I dont think he would've been any worse than clawson and he's a good recruiter...but either way I don't believe this one coordinator position hire doomed fulmer. we slowly declined over a period of time and our biggest rivals all got stronger.

You are correct, I am not sure if he was OC ready at the time, but he was a good position coach...I do know that he was great at recruiting.

Yes, things would have been very different. (1) Chavis would have re signed because he and Trooper didn't get along. (2) Trooper strikes me as the type of person who would cause problems in the ranks, and then try to take the team from Fulmer, when Fulmer was being fired. Remember how Fulmer did when Majors was in the hospital? I could see a similar situation happening when we start to have people calling for Fulmer to get fired. Trooper will push to take over the team.

Oops...

Promoting Randy Sanders was stupid enough for ole Phil. Let's don't push it.

I am sure that Fulmer was showing loyalty to Sanders for being on the staff for so long. #2. Sanders already knew Cufcliffe's offensive style and would continue it.
#3. Fulmer knew he could push Sanders around like a rag doll but if he hired a stronger O.C. he wouldn't be able to do that .
Fulmer hiring Clawson was the reason he was eventually fired.

One flaw in your post. Fulmer did get an extension, even though we lost the S.E.C. Championship game.
Remember "How can Fulmer get fired by Hamilton just one season after he signed Fulmer to an extension"
Do you remember those posts????????

Ifs, woulda's, coulda's, etc doesn't matter now. This is over and done with and is way in the past. Let it go. DD is our man right now, so let's support him, our coaching staff, and our program. Things are looking up, and hopefully we appear to be on our way out of the cellar finally after a rough few years. GBO!

Fulmer got an extension every year even in 05. That was or recruiting only! He did not get a raise in 05 however.
