Well, it happened today. Pretty sure my xbox isn't under warranty anymore since i got it Christmas '07 and i'm not sure it's covered under that type of hardware failure anyway. Anyone got any solutions to this problem?

i just checked online. it looks like microsoft covers e74 under a warranty of 3 years from the date of the purchase, so i might be shipping it off. i would crack it open myself, but i'm paranoid about screwing something up if i do that.

Dude, you might be better doing it yourself or finding somewhere locally.

You'll still have to pay for shipping, and it takes weeks to a month or two to get it back.

E74 = RROD

Usually easy to do yourself (or someone that's good with computers). But, if it's under warranty, I'd go that route.

i went ahead and registered my 360 on microsoft's website and then requested a repair. i should (hopefully) have my box to send it back in in a week or so.

i would have probably looked into just buying another one, but the warranty for e74 on my xbox was through march of 2011 so i just went ahead and shipped it in. if this ever happens again, though, i'll probably just go ahead and buy one of the new ones.

Lame! Buy one from walmart and take it back in a few weeks and get your money back. Jtrain did it a while back I believe.

on a side note to this convo, I have to say that whoever decided the system should also red ring because the A/V cords aren't plugged into a tv, is an idiot

I think he means 2 red lights if the power cord isn't plugged in all the way.

i found this out when i was packing for school.

I had unplugged the system's chords out of the TV and then realized that i needed to get one of the games out of the system before i boxed it up so i turned it back on.

It turns out if you turn on the system while the chords aren't in the TV, it by default flashes a 4 light red ring...as if it really needed to tell me "hey. system's not plugged into the tv" when it's all sitting right in front of me

big thing though was - for someone who's system's never red ringed - something like that's the last thing you want to see the day before you're getting ready to leave town

i've got several peripheral devices around my tv so i plug and unplug av cables pretty consistently......so i've definitely turned on the 360 without the a/v cables being in the tv and i've never gotten the ring. i'm not saying i don't believe it happened or anything but that sounds awfully coincidental. did it ever work again after that?

yeah, worked just find. after turning it on and off several times (still 4-ring), went through microsoft's site and it told me it was a result of the system's cords not being in the television. i tried that, it worked just find no ring

went through here and did the help on 4
Flashing Red Lights Solution | Xbox Support

http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/kb.aspx?ID=906652&lcid=1033&category=hardware

Four lights around the power button flash red on your Xbox 360 console. Four flashing lights indicates that the console does not detect an audio/video (AV) cable.

I just realized that porbably could have been flashing b/c there wasn't an AV cord plugged into the system....still not sure that should warrant that kind of response from the system though
