Dylan Sampson pushing for RB1 job in Cleveland

Cleveland is possibly the worst team in the NFL right now, but as a RB, Sampson is in a great spot. The Browns have been a run-first team for as long as I can remember. If Sampson were to also earn the starter as their 3rd down back, he could have a 1,000 yard season, despite the fact that Cleveland will be mostly throwing the ball in the 2nd half.
Unfortunately, I think the Titans are the worst. The whole organization stinks…. Bad…. Like fat trucker’s ass in August bad

They’re so dysfunctional that we spent more than $2 billion (2nd most ever) on a stadium and the capacity is designed too small to host any championships games.

Titans are a great fit for Nashville. Right down the road from Vandy.

Even if he is a career backup - which is a burning hot take after a handful of preseason carries - what would that have to do with his 2024 collegiate season?

2600 rushing yards and 29 TDs. If there was a snub to discuss it’s how they awarded Travis Hunter & the Colorado hype-train the Heisman over him
Jeanty will probably be a consistent to very good NFL back but their schedule toughness was ranked 8th in the Mountain West and 35th in the Nation. He played quite a few basically practice games that kept him in tune and healthy but they did play a tough OOC schedule. Their OOC schedule is what brought their overall number up to 35 and he did have some great games vs some P4 teams. It will be interesting to see how his career goes.

Our schedule was about as easy as a SEC schedule could ever be, and an easy schedule doesn’t account for a 1200 yard gap. The difference between Sampson’s and Jeanty’s stats alone would be a great year.

2600 yards is indeed insane. However, Boise playing Bama, UGA, Oklahoma, Florida defenses would definitely drop that number significantly.

I disagree with that. Currently, they suck. Overall, they are a mediocre organization, but they have been to 1 Super Bowl, I believe 4 conference championships and won 5 division titles since 1999. Lots of playoff appearances, too. Mediocre results, but not even close to the worst franchise.

Cleveland has done absolutely nothing since the 80’s. Haven’t even won a division title. They’re complete dumpster juice as a franchise. Undoubtedly the worst of the worst. I think there’s 8-10 franchises as bad or worse than the Titans since they were created in 1999, but none as bad as Cleveland.

I’m talking about the state of the team today. As a whole, you’re probably right

It's a shame too. They have one of the most loyal fanbases. They deserve better. They pack the place no matter how bad the team. Poorly ran for a long time.

Oh, man, stop making me defend the Titans 🤣. They literally had the same record last year. 3-14! Both absolutely sucked and will suck!!! Lol!

But I’d still rather be the Titans, honestly. They at least drafted a legit talent at QB as opposed to the clown show in Cleveland. Maybe Ward will be a bust, but he has far greater upside than any of the Cleveland QBs. And the NFL is all about the QB. No QB, no shot.

Okay, let’s say he only ran for 1800 yards. Could you imagine how the people on this board would act if they heard someone talk about a Vol who ran for 1800 yards the way the people on this board talk about Jeanty?

Also, if he is playing against a SEC defense, let’s give him a SEC offense around him in these hypotheticals.

What would Sampson stats be playing against San Jose State, New Mexico, Portland State etc.

almost 400 carries by a single back against some of the worst teams in FBS? Give me a break. He is a good player but he did what Boise always does, play a bunch of high school teams and then lose to the only good teams they play. Then their players and coaches go elsewhere and are average or worse

There’s no way to know that.

What I do know is that have been thousands upon thousands of running backs play D1 football. And millions of variations of schedules and opponents for said D1 running backs and single season rushing leaders looks like this:
1. Barry Sanders
2. Ashton Jeanty

If 2600 yards wasn’t an accomplishment, why have only 2 guys ever done it?

Because

1) Most guys don't get a schedule like this:

Right…no running back has ever played a conference schedule other than a P4 one.

And - isn’t the durability and ability to run against a stacked box pretty impressive?

You know what has happened a lot? A guy rushing for 1400 yards in the SEC.

He played exactly 1 decent team in the regular season and then got held to like 3 YPC vs PSU
He ran for another 1k yards—and flashier yards. The difference between the conferences is obvious. To everyone else, that additional 1k yards and the style in which they were achieved is what won their vote. Point is, regardless of the nuances you don’t have that type of thing happen often and most other years, Sampson gets the nod hands down. Tennessee or not.
