I live in Dallas and picked up the Dallas Observer to see Dwayne Goodrich on the cover. I remember when it happened, still a very tragic story-the kid lost everything in 10 seconds. Ironically, the kids he killed were trying to save a drunk driver's life. He deserved significant jail time in my opinion even if he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope he can make a positive impact when he gets out.

Yea, bad decision and now he has to live with it the rest of his life...he was a star at UT and I will never forget the "Pick 6" in the Championship Game against FSU...a big part of that 13-0 team...He is in my thoughts!

Its a sad story both ways. I feel for the guy. I mean he went to have a good time and made a bad decision. It would be different if he would have killed them out of cold blood. It is just a sad sad story

I could not imagine it. It has to be tough, on him and on the families affected

Very sad story on both sides..I hate to hear something like this...You are in our thoughts and prayers Dwayne and the families of those lost!

We all make judgment errors - fortunately most do not have these lifelong ramifications. Bless all involved during this Christmas season.

Sad story thats for sure!..He is in prison in a town about 2 hrs south of me....Maybe I should go visit him.

i dont feel sorry for him I called him Chicken Wing stemming from his arrest at O'Charleys on the strip. when he was drunk yelling at the cops I havent finished my chicken wings and do you know who i am? no one is above the law. and with the story abovehe went home and only turned himself in because of a warrant. he didnt pull over after he hit those people. a witness to the scene got his tag and color and model of car. Otherwise I believe he would have never come forward.

Says they got the serial number off of his side view mirror that broke off in the accident, no one got his plates.

This is why I am against driving if you have had anything at all to drink. I get so mad at any of my family and friends if they drive even if they are not drunk. I have lost good friends growing up to alcohol related accidents and I do not drink because of that.

I do not judge anyone who does drink or hold it against them as long as they don't drive. Part of me feels bad for Dewayne but the other part of me does not, it was ultimately his decision to drink and drive and as far as I am concerned he got off easy for taking 2 lives of 2 brave people that were trying to save someone else life. If he took the life of my child I would never be able to forgive him either, if you think about it he will probably be out of prison before he is 30-35 and will only serve 5-7 years total. That does not seem to steep for the price of 2 lives.

Well - you got to blame the actually "drunk" driver if all if his story is all truth. Or atleast give them a lot of the blame.

Dwayne swears he wasn't drunk.. who knows - he wouldn't admit to being drunk during the trial and could have gotten a lesser sentence if he had said he was according to the article.. so why lie there? If there was that SUV infront of him and he did swerve to the left to avoid hitting the back of it... going 50 mph there's not enough time to react or anything before he collided with them sober or not. Would of all never happened if the Person's guy wasn't driving drunk to begin with so its all really unfortunate for him.

It also says him and his friend went back to the scene later that night/morning but everything was cleaned up.. and was preparing to go turn himself in when the police arrived at his house. That's all just his word though - so you never know if its the truth or not - but why lie about it when it doesn't matter anymore and he's stuck with his sentence?

And think about it - would you have turned yourself in after something tragic like that? Maybe, maybe not.. of course you'd like to think you would do the right think.

Just some sad **** there. My buddy is doing a 36 year stint for veh hom. Best dude you would ever meet. Would give you the shirt off his back. He was a drinker but from what I heard & my sister was with him that day. he was at a VFW for 2 or 3 drinks and left driving a new Vette that he had only driven 2 times before. He was a country boy used to tractors And 4X4s. Now he wont be eligable till 2014. Sis said he had 3 beers when she was with him. This cat could put em down, 3 beers is a whet whistler. Sux for my friend & sux for Goodrich.

It really was a shame what happened. His pick six was my first memory of Tennessee. It was right before I moved from Maryland to Knoxville.

Exactly. It sounds like an unavoidable accident in which Dwayne got the blame because he had been drinking or was drunk. There is a trend to automatically blame the party who was drinking whether they were the cause of the accident or not. The part that really bothers me is the fact that he didn't stop and how long he waited to turn himself in. I can understand that he panicked but in a tough situation like that your true nature comes out. If he really wasn't drunk then he should have no reason to panic and his first thought should have been to see about the safety of anyone who could have been in or near the vehicle. Instead, he went home and consulted his team and lawyers before turning himself in 24 hrs later. I would be interested to know if or how being convicted of the lesser charge affected his civil trial.

I thought about Leonard Little when I read this. Exactly what was his situation? I can't really remember. Whatever he did, it seems like he got a slap on the wrist for it and was allowed to continue to play in the NFL.

He killed someone after a night of drinking for his birthday but only received minimal jail time, probation and community service. He was then arrested again while on probation for DUI. But was acquitted on the charges of DUI...

Major slap on the wrist compared to Goodrich...

There is no way to defend Goodrich, maybe if he would have stopped but he just kept on going. That in itself tells you he was drunk, the bottom line is if he was not drinking it is a non issue. If he would have stopped they would have been a lot easier on him even if he was drunk.

I just don't understand why people want to risk everything by drinking and driving even if you just had 2 drinks. Nothing good can come of it, you may get pulled over by a cop that wants to be a prick and he can pretty much do whatever he wants to you if you have been drinking. Nothing good ever happens when alcohol is involved period. Go out and drink and have a good time but always have a DD, esp if you are a rich athlete and already have a target on your back.

Either have a DD or call a friend or a cab, impaired decisions never seem that good when your sober.

That would be great. If you do tell him many of his fans are praying for him and wish him well. This type of thing could have happened to many of us who use to frequent night clubs when we were young and stupid and drive home after a few drinks. The only difference is we didn't run up on what he did and we were lucky at times.

May the good Lord have mercy on all our souls at that moment of truth. Yes he was drunk, yes he was responsible, and yes he was young-unseasoned-and a kid. He was a dang fine CB and a dumb kid, I'd honestly be willing to bet had regret be 10 bux a pound so far he'dve paid it off and then some. May God help us.

Its easy to see it from his side but try seeing it from the 2 dead young mens family's side. He didn't even stop and you can bet he would not have turned himself in if he thought he could have got away with it. He was young and made a mistake but he was around 23 if I am not mistaken and that is more than old enough to know better.

I have a little girl and she means more to me than anything in the world and if some scumbag ran her over drunk or not and did not even stop you might as well get my cell ready because I am shooting me a MF'er.

Reading the story before posting is a good idea.

Good article. Sad story pretty much any way you look at it. Hopefully he truly has learned from all this and can use his experiences to help others and maybe keep something like this from happening again.
