Is it me, or are duty free liquor prices overrated?

I haven't seen much (if any) difference in prices I've seen at the duty free store vs your neighborhood liquor store.

I know some whiskeys are higher proof than at a liquor store

Really... like what? I haven't really noticed that or even been aware of that before. But it does make sense now that you mention it.

I'm basing this off of what Ive seen recently (the past 2-3 years) in ATL and MIA.

My buddy at the JD distillery says the regular JD at some duty free are 90 proof. Also some bottles are bigger and there is a bottle called silver select that they only sell in duty free that is better than single barrel

One thing I'm guaranteed to see at just about any duty free store is J Walker Blue Label. The thought crosses my mind every now and then while on vacation to pick up a bottle... just because.

Then I look at the duty free price and come back to reality.

Last time I checked it was the same as you are saying, I don't see a price discount. This was for Beam, Tequila and Johnny Walker. I found the prices the same or just a few bucks less. It makes sense for flying so you can get around the "no liquid" rules. So I usually use it for buying gifts for customers or vendors when I travel but not for consumption at home.

What airport? I used to pick up crown and different single malt scotches at Narita to use as incentives in Manila for about half price.

Chicago, Hong Kong, Seoul and Atlanta. Only been to Narita once or twice. Prices compared to what I can get at Total Wine in Greenville, SC or Liquor store in Peachtree City, GA.

In the last year or so, Johnny Walker is now same price in China (Dong Guan City area). And it is the real deal, not counterfeit stuff. Selection is limited though.

Manila? I'm jealous. Still on my list, gotta do the underwater museum they have - huge number of Japanese shipwrecks left undisturbed.

Prices aren't that great at duty free for most stuff. Liquor was stupid cheap in Japan though, I went to some random grocery/odds and ends store and picked up a fifth of Jack for like eight bucks (though it would be more now with the exchange rate going to crap since I visited there last).

I'm going to have to look for that

You MUST buy JD Silver Select Single Barrel, if you see it. They only sell it in Duty Free shops and it is by far their best whiskey. 100 proof and only 35 euros. I just got some from a trip to Italy and it is amazing.
