Hey guys, Gamecock fan here. I have no interest in participating in juvenile banter or flames. I do want to shed some light on a few things about this radio confrontation.
1. David Reaves is the son of John Reaves a former QB with Florida and former coach under Spurrier. Jon Reaves came to Columbia and coached Brad Scotts last year with Gamecocks. That is how David came to Columbia. David Reaves had been on Lou Holtz staff and Steve held him over for his staff.
2. David's father Jon has been in a battle with drugs for several years. During this time Steve has helped support him and his family in many ways. When Jon was arrested in Florida with Cocaine and a illegal hand gun a few months ago, Spurrier protected David Reaves from the media and did not allow the topic to be questioned in public.
3. Duce and David are friends, Duce is the sideline reporter for the radio network and is involved with the team and coaches.
What he was primarily upset about had nothing at all to do with the University of Tennessee. He heard that David had told lies about Spurriers intentions to retire next year to MANY recruits.
Duce was outraged not about the damage to South Carolinas recruiting efforts, but by the fact he would lie about someone who had done so much for him and his family.
His radio comments went on to say that the appropitate way to have handled the situation was to have just told the truth and said I am at a new school, come see what we have to offer.
David did say he never said that about Steve Spurrier, but not one, but several recruits have reported he did, so it is one of the classic "who do you beleive" situations.
Ok, as for the South Carolina program, here we go:
In the 1970's South Carolina built facilities for their sports programs that were 2nd to none. Well they pretty much stayed the same 1970's grade until recently. Blame bad politics for most of it.They are about half way done now with upgrades, and when they are finished they will pretty much be on par with the best in the SEC and hence the country.
When SC joined the SEC in the 1990's they pretty much competed with East Carolina, Duke, Virginia, NC State for their recruits. They would get the occasional top 10 in SC guy, but for the most part the best players left the state.
Since 2000 when Holtz came aboard, this started to change. South Carolina and Clemson started to get most of the talent in the state. Those we recruited against started having names like Georgia, UT, Florida State, Alabama and so on.
Spurrier in 5 recruiting classes has a 23, 6, 18, and currently 8 class in the country.
The schools revenues (not including the new tv money which we all will get) went from $42 million a year and 8th in the SEC in 2005, to $65 million and 5th in the SEC this year.
Here is the win - loss SEC record this decade so far:
Florida 55-19
UGA 53-22
LSU 53-23
Aub 50-24
Tenn 47-28
Bama 38-34
SC 34-38
Ark 34-40
Ole Miss 29-43
Miss St 17-55
Kent 17-55
Vandy 13-59
UT 5th and SC 7th
Neither program is happy there. I am not one who thinks SC has passed UT nor do I think UT has stayed ahead of SC, I think the East is in a new pattern where Florida at the moment is in the cat bird seat, and UGA UT SC can finish anywhere from 2nd the 4th.
This year excluded Vandy and Kentucky cannot go into the year expecting with their talent level to compete.
The difference in SC's program now is that the talent level is now top 15 as opposed to top 50 grade as was the case in the 1990's.
This is primarily because of coaching moves, but the AD is smart and has been upgrading facilities and revenue in the mean time. So quite simply the playing field has been leveled in that way, and I think that is all realistic Gamecock fans are attempting to get across.
