I have seen the reports on Sykes being moved to DT at 270 or so. Im not a expert by any means, but according to the norm these days 290 to 300 is the avg. I guess.

My question is,

Is it an advantage to have different size guys for this position, with different abilities?

Meaning, If I was a guard or center, to me it would be a challenge to go from blocking a 300lb. strong guy, that leans on you, to blocking a quicker 270lb. guy. Seems like that would be a lot to prepare for during the week, cause they would bring different skills to account for.

I remember Turk McBride being very disruptive we he moved inside, because the guards, and tackles could not stay in front of him.

Thoughts?

I think Monte said once he likes a smaller, quicker, more agile interior lineman that is why he wanted to move Wes Brown inside. He uses more of a NG as a run stuffer.

I thought Monte liked to have a smaller guy at DT (Wes Brown) and a big guy (Dan Williams)...

I think 275, with good quickness, and technique, would be hard to block for a 300-310lb. middle lineman.

There's that Greenbriar homer.:)

I don't know where Grenbriar is, I'm from Greenbrier :p

Leverage and speed is where it's at. Kiffin likes a space-eater at DT spot and a speed guy at the other.

Dan Williams is a great space eater. I think Brown can be serviceable but he'll get worn down fast because of his size and injury history. That's why Sykes is seeing a lot of time at DT

You a Bobcat.:)

Be nice to add Walls to the mix. Who else makes some noise? Hughes?

I feel good about our depth if Walls gets in. That gives us 5 in the main rotation.

It would be nice if there were some experienced players in the rotation

Yeah, you never have as much of that as you want. Williams and Brown are it. And Brown's is at another spot.

I hope Brown holds up, and William stays healthy as well.

Small fast dts with good technique can be disruptive. But against teams with big offensive lines those small dts can be ineffective against the power run. For example, imagine 275 sykes trying to hold his ground against 340 pound guards that hell see on the better teams in the sec....

Andre Mathis has been a big dissapointment. He seems to have been bounced around from position to position. Surely between, Thomas, Nelson, and Mathis - one of those guys could be ok and provide some depth if Brown stays banged up and Walls doesn't get in.

I think Victor Thomas played more than Nelson or Mathis last year, but that was almost by default, as last man standing. Maybe one of these 3 will get newly energized by the new staff. But what do I know; I kept thinking Donald Langley was gonna explode for us and he never did.

What a fine player Turk was, and under appreciated IMO. If Sykesw can be half the player that he was, we will be in good shape.
