Is it true that Monte prefers faster, smaller DT's...like in the 275-285 range...

If so I think the size issue isn't a factor with what we currently have...Williams is 310(maybe needs to slim down), Thomas is 275, Nelson 270, Langley 290, Jeffrey 285, Walls 275(dont know how accurate this is)...

Does this new DT philosophy that Monte brings hurt or help our depth?

Monte's DTs have traditionally been around 285lb to 310lbs. The Bucs NT or 2-technique DT is Chris Hovan. He is listed around 290lbs. Warren Sapp played the 3-technique for Monte in Tampa. His weight fluctuated between 285 and 315 during his career.

The weight of the DTs is not the deciding factor concerning who fits his system. It is their ability to consistently apply pressure on the QB up the middle. This allows the DEs (Think Simeon Rice) to close the pocket from the outside without the QB being able to step-up in the pocket to avoid the sack.

Ideally in Monte's system the pass rush is provided by the 4 down-lineman. This frees up the linebackers for pass coverage and to flow to the the ball.

I hope that helps......

He doesn't mind big guys as long as they can move.
He will take speed over size, if he has to choose.
If he has both, look out QB.

He simply likes high motor guys. Big and Fast is preferred. Coach O has the same philosophy.

I know we are talking tackles here but what im most excited about is watching what Monte does with Eric. After the years of watching Ronde Barber down here , im exciting to see some of the schemes bringing it the other way to the checkerboard. Monte might miss the touchdown cannon though.

I think he said he prefers them big and fast. But, fast was the most important aspect.

Welcome to the board :hi:

Thanks,

I have been lurking for a long time. I am 5th generation from Sevier county. Somehow I ended up living/working in Tampa for about 10-years. I came back to Sevier county about 6-years ago. I followed our VOLs all my life and adopted the Bucs while I was down living in purgatory.

I have seen some interlopers on recently say CMK could not handle the spread.. blah.blah... I can say this about CMK. His base D is the Tampa2 and it works well, but he adapts quickly in game, based on the opponent and week to week based on the stengths of his players.

Later, Be Safe

The Colts use the Tampa 2 and had great success with Booger McFarland on running downs
