mckenzie tuttle o brien vickers are all prven guys to rely on. after them besides picou i dont see much. johnson im writing off as gone at this point

I hope its proven wrong about the charges against johnson.many he should have sent out a Visio of him just punching a girl.I would about bet money that Mississippi state lets Simmons or whatever his name is play this year if he is good enough.

If we get Johnson back I'll be happy with the depth. Really need to start the season with 6 solid capable bodies because those guys will get banged up. We'll never know but with a healthy Tuttle we might have stolen a win at Bama last year.

With his size and athleticism I could see Kongbo playing both. Keeping in mind though already a workout warrior Kongbo's yet to work with Maurer or the S&C program.

Coach Doug Mathews saying this morning on Big Orange Sunday that "EVERYTHING he hears from both Team insiders + legal insiders point to charges against Johnson being dropped...which will then just leave his eligibility up to The University."

We can only hope correct decisions are made.

Without Johnson, we will be in trouble at DT. There will be injury eventually at that position and we must have more depth.

Khalil Mac is one of the best DTs in the conference. That will become clear near the end of this season.

Obrien is tough
Vickers is a 4th year guy that gets stronger and stronger.

Tuttle is the most talented, but he wont be a real force again till 2017 imo, But... he will still be tough this year.

Thats a 4 man rotation most teams would love to have.

Then theres Picou.
and 6'4 295 lb Paul Bain

Were okay at DT.

We are set everywhere else. I want this to be the year we win it all, because of all the talent. But this is the one area that scares me.

We have 5. Without Johnson or Bain. Thats not deep, but it isnt thin either.

Our defense is about creating turnovers and getting pressure on the QB.

That means a lot of 3 and outs for the opposition.

If were giving up 3rd downs all the time, then it wouldnt matter if we had KMac,Tuttle, Bamas DTs and Clemsons Dts as backups.

But he lost a lot of weight, slimmed down and backed up Barnett at DE last year. I guess he could slide down, but he's 255 lbs and not a true DT. And, unless it's a particular hybrid scheme designed by Shoop for specific looks from an opposing offense, if we're having to slide an undersized DE down to DT out of necessity, doesn't that speak to our lack of DT depth?

Yeah, pretty much. If Tuttle bounces back from his injury well, the rest of our guys stay relatively healthy all season, and Picou proves he can be relied on at least for a specialty role of some sort then our DT depth should be fine in 2016. But I doubt we're fortunate enough to see all or even most of those things happen.

So I imagine Shoop is going to try and get creative at times using some of our bigger DEs on the inside occasionally in pass rushing situations. Sliding some of our bigger guys down to a 3 technique to get after the passer is a possible way of masking some depth issues at DT.

4 can be enough if they stay healthy all year. DT is a spot where we've seen surprisingly few injuries in season over the past few seasons. Tuttle is the only major DT injury we've seen since Butch got here.

But we are deep at DE and a few may also play inside some. For sure in some situations. We are going to be tough upfront, we just don't need any major injuries. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!

Vickers. Maybe the most underrated player on the roster.

Yes. Sorry, I put in Mixon instead of Vickers.

That's 4 very good tackles (if Picou keeps improving), so we are really good at the position. If Shy comes along as hoped, then 5, and were in good shape. If Johnson can navigate out of the infamous play fight, then we'll have 6 and all of them good. Plus Bain can get some reps.

Pull that together and we're coking with gas.

Plus, even our last DC put 3 or DTs in on passing downs last year. I would imagine the new one doing the same.

this, is see Vickers and Mixon moving inside at times on passing downs to play a role much like that Malik Jackson used to. yeah I know he was a full time starter but he is the best comparison. A 34 DE looking for a place in the 43

We have Bain. And I would not be shocked if he makes an impact week 1. From the few film snippets I have seen of spring practice, Bain or whoever is wearing his number seems to move pretty damn well.

And just a reminder: When you see him on the VolWalk, please do not call him Ball Pain.

I'm excited to see Darrell Taylor and Andrew Butcher. From spring reports it sounds like Taylor is closer to 240-250 now, and we already know he's quick. Does anyone know about how Butcher is progressing with his recovery? I really hope he's able to be at 100% by the fall. I imagine there will be a bit of a drop off since he wont have really played a down since his senior year, but based on his highlight film this guy is NASTY! 6'2-6'3, 260-270 lbs, and a motor for days! Sounds like he's really worked his butt off in the weight room too. Having a guy that's Derek Barnett's size and drive as a back up is exciting. I digress... anyone have some insight on his recovery, as well as Kyle Phillips shoulder?
