Got a couple kittens about 2 months ago, 2 brothers. Figured they'd help control pests and snakes etc in the yard where my boys play and my kids love animals. Black and white one and an Orange and White one. Named em Derek and Dooley.
Derek (black and white) came up missing this past week, my boys don't understand but still asked where he was a few times. Dooley started acting different and a lot more clingy since Derek has been gone, when before he didn't crave much attention and was just wild as hell.
I always am careful about this but today idk wtf...
Went out to start my truck and then heard a strange knocking. Looked at my Baby mama like wtf, then she said "Oohhh it's the cat!"
I hurried up and cut the truck off and his cries were heartbreaking. I immediately was mad at myself for not checking first and mad at him for being in there. My mind also went directly to how much my kids love him, I just knew he was dead but not out of his misery yet.
I came in to collect myself and the bm, and looked outside to see him drop out from under the truck, writhing in pain with his face and front legs limp as his back legs pushed and scooted him across the concrete.
All I could think about was why didn't I check and how am I gonna put him out of his misery, all the while my bm is freaking out. It sounded horrific, and I realized in that moment that no matter how much I hated how wild and crazy that cat is, I loved him.
I called the animal people to come out, and went back outside to be with him expecting him to be fading and just suffering his death, but to my surprise he had walked back up the driveway after I was sure his neck and legs were broke...
It started to rain, I covered him with an umbrella and brought him a bowl of water. His cries were gut wrenching. I tried checking him out without further injuring him. He wasn't as bad off as I thought he would be. The worst of it superficially is his left eye got smacked pretty good by the fan blade, along with other gashes on his body and swelling on his head. Idk what type of internal damage he may have suffered or head trauma, but I washed him up, gave him pain medicine and have been giving him water too. He responds and purrs when he's not knocked out, still in pain, but hopefully he will be ok with some rest and TLC.
It f'd my BM up pretty bad to see him suffering like that, and it hurt me thinking I killed my boys favorite buddy when I ALWAYS check before I crank the vehicles, but today I didn't.
Poor Dooley, he limped off into the woods and just laid down crying when it started raining and I just squatted at the tree line talking to him and trying to call him back for like 30 mins, thinking he would come out when it stopped raining. Before then I didn't know whether he wanted to live or die... I was honestly afraid that he may think somebody harmed him on purpose.
For now, I think and am hoping he is gonna be ok. I will take him to be checked out pending his progress.
Thanks for listening.
