Dressing for Kentucky game - Tips, Tricks, Gear

After having lived in Montana a few years and been to a handful of games below 0 in Missoula, this thread is cute.

Get a pair of merino wool socks (I love Smartwool socks), some synthetic or merino wool base layer undershirt (SYNTHETIC or wool being the key words here, cotton is not recommended as the second it gets wet it loses all insulating qualities) and layer with several thin layers as opposed to one thick layer. A fleece jacket + shell rain jacket works great (a down jacket will also be good if you're cold-natured).

Also, a large portion of your body heat escapes out of your head. A synthetic or wool hat will do wonders. Stay hydrated, drink water, and avoid the booze.

And most importantly, get up out of your seat, jump around, and don't be a blue hair. This is guaranteed to keep the blood flowing and the stadium energized!

What part of the "Last Best Place" do you currently live in? For those lamenting the current weather conditions here, I see that it is -13 in Shelby, MT, one hour east of Glacier NP.

I don't have time to read a full seven pages of comments on this thread but I say "thanks" to all the cold weather experts from up north.
Here's the deal, most of us aren't from up "there" and really don't care what you folks consider is or isn't cold. Yeah we are probably pretty wimpy in handling the cold because we don't have to live with it as much down here.
That's one of the reasons WHY we live down here and most yankees try to move south as soon as they can upon retirement. (then of course they want to change everything because we southerners are too dumb for their tastes yet they come to where we live and not vice versa--but that's another topic entirely)
My simple advice for southerners to dress for this type of cold is cheap fleece or wool with something heavier to break the wind. (yes I said break wind)
Fleece is cheap, lightweight and feels warm always. Even when wet fleece and wool don't feel cold to the touch like cotton.
I wade the river for smallmouth in January and I guarantee that's as cold as being at Lambeau.

It is very pricey but, from a functional standpoint, definitely worth it. Personally, I have never liked the fit of compression gear undergarments. I would recommend this type of undergarment more highly for the legs; most people are not sufficiently "armed" for the purposes of providing warmth to the lower body.

For the fifty (or more) dollars that you will spend for UnderArmour compression cold weather gear, you can purchase some magnificent Tennessee orange, fleece garments from Columbia, one of the premier manufacturers of clothing for outdoorsmen. They made a short-term foray into the collegiate apparel market but have basically pared it back to fleece jackets/sweaters. See, for example, the following:

Tennessee Volunteers Columbia Fast Tech Overlay Fleece – Tennessee Orange (basically their version of the North Face Denali Jacket): Tennessee Volunteers Columbia Fast Tech Overlay Fleece

Tennessee Volunteers Halfpipe Jacket – Tennessee Orange: Tennessee Volunteers Halfpipe Jacket (A lightweight, streamlined garment of this type would probably fit well beneath a full-zip hoodie.)

Tennessee Volunteers Columbia Flanker II Jacket – Tennessee Orange (I have purchased this jacket in the past and I don't believe that its current online visual representation is accurate): Tennessee Volunteers Columbia Flanker II Jacket

In my opinion, gear by Columbia Outerwear far surpasses that of Adidas or Nike for cold-weather functionality. Columbia used to manufacture a "3 in 1 Interchange" jacket (combination windshell with fleece jacket, either of which could be worn separately or together for maximal warmth, see, for example, Men) in Tennessee orange but, unfortunately, they have discontinued that product.

It's hard to beat that bugaboo jacket, with the zipped in layers

I'm an old deer hunter and what i was always to do was wear layers. I'd say under armor/long johns, undershirt, long sleeve shirt, hoodie or jacket. You'll def want something to keep your head/neck warm. Warm socks for sure.

Yes, I wish that I could find online pictures of the heavier Columbia jackets in Tennessee orange but they have both been discontinued; they are both gorgeous and highly functional. One, as I stated previously, is basically the Big Orange equivalent of the Bugaboo jacket; the other isn't quite as heavy but has the same nylon shell for wind-breaking purposes and a fleece lining, but not a separate fleece jacket that can be worn separately or in conjunction with the shell, as described previously by comparison to the Bugaboo jacket.

After sitting in a treestand 30 feet off the ground at 6:30 in the morning, in 15 - 20 degree temps with a 10mph breeze cuttin right through ya.... sittin in a stadium surrounded by people in 30 degree temps with no wind would be a cakewalk.... Just wear a good coat, and take somethin to sit on to get off the cold metal (as previously stated in this thread), and enjoy the game... wish I was goin but our Sunday school class decided the night of the Kentucky game was a good time to plan a get together for some reason...

I'm worried that if either team is up by 3 scores or more at half time, half the stadium will empty. If either team is up by 3 scores or more at the start of the 4th only 10% of the stadium will be full.

I'm down in Missoula now finishing up school, but for the past year and a half I was working and living inside Glacier in West Glacier in park housing at Headquarters. In the summer, there's not a better place on Earth to live.

In the winter, it got pretty old going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark, only to have to shovel snow off the driveway and watch your sidewalk to your front door slowly become an 8ft tall trench. Between the roof sliding and the snow piling up I could not see out of the windows on the back half of my house. Not to mention being one of 5 people in the whole area, with the nearest grocery store being at minimum 30 minutes away. However, it was near one of the best ski resorts in North America (Whitefish), so $600 ski pass saved my ass from becoming a destitute hermit!

Missoula is "mild" compared to a lot of Montana because of a persistent inversion layer that usually keeps it quite a bit warmer, and snowfall is not as common. Up in Glacier, snowfall would be just about every other night, with a steady 3-5" every time. Here in Missoula, more likely to get just a few inches a week or so, with a couple big dump blizzards.

Although it is far too short-lived, I enjoy Glacier most in fall, when the tourists are gone for the season, the weather is cool and crisp, the elk are bugling in the canyons and the aspen are at their peak of color. Many Glacier and Two Medicine valleys, as well as the areas around St. Mary Lake and Chief Mountain are absolutely gorgeous then.

It may be sacrilege to some, but I have missed more than a few Florida games to see Glacier and other parts of the Northern Rockies in fall.

Anyone overdress???
I shouldn't have brought my carhartt ,but the ua and wool socks with tennis shoes was much needed, had a great time, my wife had a great time, can't wait to return!

Probably the coldest game i've been to, to date. After freezing my butt off at the Music City Bowl in 2010, I wanted to learn from my mistakes. I stayed quote comfortable the whole game.

Long Johns
Tshirt
Long Sleeved T shirt
winter jacket liner
windproof jacket
mittens(with removable ends.....so make digging for mini bottles easier)
hat/jacket hood
wool socks.

I had a full face mask but ended up not needing it. Walked in carrying the jacket/liner and put them on as needed. Was quite comfortable the whole game.

Used this in my days around the artic circle..works great except its hard to drink.

That's awesome. :)

My thighs got chilly but other than that I was good. I just held hand warmers with my gloves against the top of them. I did the polyester blend(thick) socks with my New Balance shoes and that worked perfect for the feet. Had a UT ball cap and stretched a headband ear warmer over it.
