Dueling articles at CBS on UT v. UF. Warning this Doyel guy (UF grad) is an A** hole!

Kiffin needs whippin' from Meyer's Gators - CBSSports.com

Kiffin needs whippin' from Meyer's Gators:

For his own good, Lane Kiffin can't just lose Saturday when his Tennessee football team goes to Gainesville to play No. 1 Florida. Most people go to the Swamp and lose, but Kiffin isn't most people.

Since he's so special, Kiffin needs to lose by 50.

Sixty would be preferable, but 60 could be out of the question. But 50? I bet Florida could beat Tennessee by 50. So it needs to happen.

Lane Kiffin arrived on the scene as brash as anybody. (Getty Images)
Which means Urban Meyer must be the one to administer the butt-whipping. If that means running up the score, fine. Run it up. We know he can do it. We saw the Georgia game from 2008, one year after the entire Georgia team made the mistake of celebrating a touchdown by sprinting off the bench and congregating in the end zone. That was 2007. In 2008, Florida won 49-10 -- and late in the game, Meyer was coaching like he wanted 56-10. So we know that, when he's good and pissed off, Meyer has a cruel streak. That's good, because this game against Tennessee calls for cruelty.

Kiffin needs it.

Call it tough love. Call it cruel love. Call it abject hatred. Just don't call me -- a 1992 Florida graduate -- a UF homer. If I'm a Florida homer, I'm the most misguided Florida homer of all time.

On second thought, call me a Florida homer if that's the only way you can handle an opinion like this one. I don't care what you call me, or what you would call a final score Saturday of, say, 56-3. Just know this: Urban Meyer needs to use his Florida football team as an instrument of vengeance and even an instrument of wisdom to teach the impertinent Tennessee coach a lesson he'll never forget.

Kiffin will thank Meyer later. Or not. Kiffin strikes me as a fairly smart guy, just not a very self-aware guy. So he probably won't learn the lesson from this butt-kicking that he really needs to learn. That lesson being this:

Until you've accomplished something, anything, keep your mouth shut.

Being brash is acceptable when, and only when, you have the résumé to back it up. Urban Meyer, for example, is brash. Mike Freeman is ripping him today for it, but here's my take on cockiness or conceit or any word you want to apply to Meyer, and also to Kiffin: It ain't bragging if you can back it up. Meyer has won two national titles at Florida and nearly won a title at Utah. If he comes off at times like a man who reinvented the game, well, guess what? He did. The spread offense that's everywhere in football? Urban did that. The Wildcat that's now in the NFL? The spread spawned that, which means Urban Meyer did that, too.

What has Kiffin done? I have no idea. He didn't resurrect Southern California. That was Pete Carroll, with an assist from Norm Chow. He didn't win with the Raiders. His résumé attracted the gawkers at Tennessee, but it's fake. Whether he was being pushed along by his father, Monte, or his sugar daddy, Carroll, Kiffin has carved out a career by standing on the shoulders of greatness.

But he thinks he levitated there all by himself.

So when Kiffin got the Tennessee job in late 2008, he got to talking. He mocked Florida. He mocked South Carolina. He mocked recruits who chose other schools, and he even mocked one of the most talent-rich areas -- the area near the Everglades -- in the recruiting hotbed of Florida.

Kiffin says it was all part of his plan. Since he was recruiting nationally, he needed to make Tennessee a national talking point. And in that sense, it worked. Kiffin signed one of the top classes in the country and landed the No. 1 player, tailback Bryce Brown. His abrasive methods? Intentional, he says. All attention is good attention for Lane Kiffin, which makes him the naked Wimbledon streaker of SEC football coaches.

Tim Brando of CBS delivered the best analogy since Tim Tebow's oldest ancestor crawled out of the ocean when he said, and I'm quoting Brando here, "What Lane Kiffin has done is energize the base. It's what Sarah Palin did to the Republican party."

Perfect. Palin energized the base, won eyeballs for her side, then flamed out. To this day she thinks she's a winner, and it must be nice to have that kind of clueless confidence. Kiffin has it, too. He talked to CBSSports.com college football writer Dennis Dodd in March about the series of public gaffes that put Tennessee on the national radar, and he said "this stuff was on purpose." Demeaning South Carolina as a university whose graduates pump gas was "on purpose." Calling Urban Meyer a cheater -- even if he was so wrong that he had to apologize publicly -- was "on purpose."

Sure it was.

Everyone has known a Lane Kiffin in their life. He's that spoiled little boy put on a pedestal by mommy, a silly kid who honestly believes he belongs on that pedestal. So he ventures outside and tries to bully the bigger kids because -- until that first punch hits him in the nose -- he has no idea there are consequences.

On Saturday, Meyer needs to hit him in the nose. Teach lil' Lane that there are, in fact, consequences.

You don't have to be a Florida fan to want this to happen. One of my better friends told me this week, "I hate Urban Meyer, but I hope he kicks Kiffin's ass." Even some Tennessee people know what I'm talking about. Former coach Phillip Fulmer, as loyal a Volunteer as you'll find, sounds like he's wincing when he says of Kiffin, "If you're going to be brash, you better be able to back it up."

Kiffin? Brash. One of the first things he said when he got the Tennessee job was this:

"I'm looking forward to embracing some of the great traditions at the University of Tennessee ... singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year."

Next year is here.

Let the schooling begin.

Not that I expect Kiffin to grasp the lesson. Even as the Florida side of the scoreboard rockets toward 40, then 50, hopefully even 60, Kiffin won't get it. That's my guess. Some people simply can't learn humility, and Kiffin seems like one of them. So Meyer needs to administer this lesson not just for Kiffin, but for other coaches as well. For future coaches.

Maybe even for the brash young kid who replaces Kiffin in three years.

No Lane, no gain for coaches trying to trump Urban legend - CBSSports.com

This is an attempt at the impossible, but by the time you're done reading this I'm going to have many of you rooting for Lane Kiffin.

Sure, yes, you hate him. Certainly, he's kind of a dweeb. Lane Kiffin can be Lane Smitten. When Kiffin was hired he practically guaranteed a victory over Florida. Real smart, Lane-o. He accused Urban Meyer of cheating. He's sometimes a blowhard.

Wanting to see somebody top Urban Meyer is reason enough to root for Lane Kiffin. (Getty Images)
Go ahead and hate Lane, but hate is sometimes a good thing and the hatred between Kiffin and Meyer might one day make the SEC a lot more interesting.

Florida fans understandably adore Meyer, and why not? He's Bill Walsh. Still, having Meyer dominate the conference so thoroughly is actually bad for it. Meyer needs a foil that possesses the same public smart-ass-ness and brashness he does.

That man just might be Kiffin.

Despite how Kiffin makes some want to punch him in the face, the conference must have someone who can match Meyer.

Many SEC coaches took their best punch at Meyer and failed, some miserably. Phil Fulmer, in the end, was a tubby goober whom Meyer abused. Mark Richt, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban and a host of other SEC coaches have all had their chances and Meyer has responded by beating them all with a paddle. Meyer is a carnivore and they've all been Bambi.

Meyer is 12-1 against his biggest rivals and that includes Georgia and Tennessee.

Few in the SEC have been capable of slowing down the Urban Meyer Express. Most have ricocheted like bullets off Superman's chest.

Meyer has utilized the SEC as a springboard to win two national titles in four years -- and probably a third this year -- and grow a player in Tim Tebow who might win a second Heisman Trophy.

Meyer has just about embarrassed every coach in the SEC.

So why not give Kiffin a shot?

Kiffin could be one of the few SEC coaches capable of matching Meyer cojón for cojón and win for win.

I want Kiffin on that wall, I need Kiffin on that wall.

Is Kiffin the perfect Manchurian Candidate? No way. Is he insufferable at times? Yes, way. Yet he's no more obnoxious than some others like the arrogant Charlie Weis, the sniveling Rick Neuheisel or the bullying Saban.

And Meyer isn't exactly the most smirk-less guy in the room.

The fact Kiffin has a big mouth makes him just like a bunch of other college coaches.

Kiffin's insufferable nature at least has a purpose. Kiffin is the Sarah Palin of college football. He'll say anything to fire up his base. He does this with a wink, knowing it'll draw attention to the Volunteers.

It might not seem like it now, but Kiffin can coach. If Kiffin gets time to rebuild the Tennessee program, he'll provide a nice challenge to Meyer.

At least until Meyer leaves to coach the Dallas Cowboys.

Also, don't make the mistake of thinking that after Meyer's Gators beat the Volunteers 75-0 on Saturday that means Kiffin isn't capable of one day providing suitable resistance to Meyer. Kiffin just got to Tennessee.

Give Kiffin a year or two, please, before you start crowing about how wrong I am and calling him Lane Kitten.

All of this isn't as much about Meyer as it is about whether any coach in the SEC can consistently challenge him, on and off the field.

Kiffin is that guy.

Someone has to be or Meyer will keep beating SEC coaches ... and beating them ... and beating them.

Then beating them some more.

So aren't you (non-Gator fans) rooting for Kiffin now?

Just a little?

I surprised at Freeman. You would think a guy with teeth like that would refrain from poking fun at another's looks.

Is this guy serious? I think we should all find out who the person in charge is over at cbssports and get this guy to never write another article for them again. This is absolutely uncalled for and these sports writers are not supposed to show that much favoritism towards one team. Is anyone else as ticked off about this as I am?

Both of them are good articles really.. even though some goes against what most of us believe to be true. Anything can happen on saturday and after reading that article by Doyle it would fire my ___ up big time. Go out and punch them in the mouth HARD! They CAN lose you know. I agree with a couple more recruiting classes that this team will be on FIRE! If Meyer doesn't want to continue to lose to THE BIG ORANGE then he needs to bolt for another college or the NFL. He won't make it in the NFL as a good coach. Stay in Gainesville for a few more years and let's see what happens chief. WE WILL be dominate over florida again real soon.

How appropriate! The UF grad writes the pro-UF article, while the UF-hater(Freeman used to work for a Jacksonville paper, but was driven off by the locals for spewing a lot of Florida hate) writes the anti-UF article.

BTW, these two are supposed to be dueling articles, so they're both gonna be homerish except for different sides.

Little Lane is a ton taller than Doyel and could kick the crap out of him.

I will fight Greg Doyel bare knuckle, but that fat slob loser would never think about accepting.

When you try to condescend to someone it is better if they are not richer, more athletic, stronger, taller, smarter, more accomplished and wealthier than you.

Doyel can rot with Kanye West.

It's not just CBS. It's NBC, Sporting News, Scout, Rivals, etc. Seems like everyone is thinking Tennessee is going to whipped so badly that Kiffen will be taught a lesson. I don't think I have ever seen anthing like this from the national media.

I don't know what's worse here, being bashed by Doyel or supported by Freeman.

They both blow.
