Down to Four Candidates for HC (Speculation)

Does it really matter? Volnation will be trying to run the coach off in 3 years anyway regardless of whom it might be. This soap opera has only just begun.

Venables or Morris are the only two I would consider out of this list. I may have missed it, but is there any confirmation that Venables has been contacted?

Idk that he has been contacted personally, but his people have. A lot of speculation that he is up for the Arkansas job but holding out for an offer from Tennessee.

If in 3 years a coach can't show some tangible improvement then maybe they do need to be run off. Some of you people that are into 10 year rebuild jobs amaze me. Maybe you're all union workers and used to taking your sweet ass time getting a job done but the rest of us expect results a little sooner.

Agreed but, if they find a PROVEN HC, there is at least a chance that we might get back to prominence.

I do not think a Freshman coach is a good idea for UTK right now - we do not have time to wait this time.

I wonder if anyone has put an entertaining offer to Jim Bob Cooter. He can't be making that much as OC for the Lions.I hear people say he wants to stay in the NFL but money talks and I can't imagine anyone that's lived in the south wanting to live in Detroit Michigan.I think I could make that sell w/no state income tax, weather, cost of living and less crime. The NFL is on a downward spiral IMO that may not end well and some are questioning his coaching in Detroit.IDK but I believe the right offer could bring him home and get Tee for OC.

Huge let down. I expected Phil to pull better talent.

8-4 ceiling here we come...

Doug Mathews said on this past Sunday's "Big Orange Sunday Show" that PF mentioned to him the other day, after PF was appointed AD, that either 6 or 7 of the 8 conference losses this year were to teams who's HC's came from the defensive side of the ball. Given that fact, no-one should be surprised that PF's main focus has been on coaches from the defensive side of the ball. Anyone who has followed FB, (college or pro), for any length of time knows the saying "Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships" is more than just a saying. It has been proven true, more times than not.

From what I am seeing we are now down to four candidates for the job:

Brent Venables - Clemson DC
Chad Morris - SMU HC
Mel Tucker - Georgia DC
Kevin Steele - Auburn DC

Report: Tennessee met with multiple candidates over the weekend - Rocky Top Talk

Les Miles was a part of this list until a report came out that he was no longer a candidate.

Thoughts?
With all the possibilities at the beginning of this search and the big moves made since then by other schools...
My thoughts?
It figures. I’d venture to say most casual fans had no idea who two of those guys were before now. What’s the opposite of exciting? Boring? That’s not really enough to describe it. So.....

What in his resume would make you think that? It's not like he has a great coaching tree or anything. If he actually makes a decent hire I'll be extremely surprised. I expect Steele or someone like that so we can endure more mediocrity. The problem also will be that whoever he gets will have a very long rope as Fulmer isn't going to fire anyone or admit failure.

Hey Phil

We had Mike Leach

what the eff is wrong with you?

You are going to give us retread coordinatoers?

NO NO NO NO

Get the eff off the throne----you ain't no king anymore!

Why couldn't you go get a coach better than Mike Leach if you had to kill Currie ?

We were a hell of a lot better off with Leach and Currie than we will be with Fulmer and a retread unproven coordinator!

So we fired Currie who had mike freaking Leach signed . And hired fulmer who talked all about VFLs but is gonna hire a DC from Georgia . Makes perfect damn sense

Can’t wait until the recruits start horse laughing about what is happening in Knoxville.

If this chit continues and I see no reason to believe it won't, I will join those around the country who are bashing and laughing at Tennessee!

I will have had enough and will cross over to the other side!

Enough is enough and i will not suffer with these fools anymore!

And I'm afraid I will see a lot of you guys with me on the other side.

Sorry but true!

remind everyone one more time:

Tennessee generates more revenue and posts more profit than any team in the SEC.

That number also holds up around the nation. Only Texas can even come close to what is going on at Tennessee!

And we can't spend the money to hire a coach?

Or we can't hire a coach who will share the ride with Phil?

Man, this is bad and getting worse by the minute!

A lot of fans are asking this same question, but his name(Leach) isn't popping up anymore with any of the media reporting this search.

Phil gave us a highlight video with his face on the finish, so we can feel good while forgetting about a future with Coach Leach.

this f****ing blows. I've seriously lost the little faith that i had in fulmer...

Tucker's resume per wikipedia...
1997–1998 Michigan State (GA)
1999 Miami (OH) (DB)
2000 LSU (DB)
2001–2003 Ohio State (DB)
2004 Ohio State (Co-DC)
2005–2007 Cleveland Browns (DB)
2008 Cleveland Browns (DC)
2009–2011 Jacksonville Jaguars (DC)
2011 Jacksonville Jaguars (interim HC)
2012 Jacksonville Jaguars (AHC/DC)
2013–2014 Chicago Bears (DC)
2015 Alabama (AHC/DB)
2016–Present Georgia (DC/DB)

This is considerable movement for an applicant. In the business world, this would have "red-flags" ALL OVER IT. No one would hire a professional into the business world with this type of inconsistency.

Good thing the coaching world and the business world are completely different. Great resume for a coach.
