Doug Matthews Roasting the AD hiring process

Total meltdown on the administration. Basically....led fulmer and blackburn on, cut Anderson out of having a say because he supported Fulmer. Never had a say in things at the end....Big Jim made decision and had contract worked out before Davenport hit the ground in Manhattan. Says it was done dirty with the leading on of other candidates

It's called interviewing.. happens every day

My interest in this is slowly diminishing, pretty close to just accepting it and moving on.

Key word is "close". :)

This is why it was so selfish and senseless for fulmer to throw himself into the mix. He was in no way qualified and only proved to be divisive. All of you thinking he "bleeds orange" and "just wants what's best for UT" are deluding yourselves. His actions say the opposite of these things.

This place is starting to sound like a gossip column. No one knows the truth and all these hurt feelings are so juvenile it's ridiculous. John Currie is a professional. Amateurs like us should leave our agenda driven opinions at home and tend to the things we know about like gardening, fishing, hunting etc....I've said before I have family members who were legendary coaches in the SEC and most would know immediately who they are but I've NEVER heard this type of stuff from any of them. NEVER...they are professionals and hurt feelings and the like just never enter the pic. I like Doug Matthews personally but his new career is dependant on opinions. Take them with a grain of salt...JMO of course...
UT athletics has never been this divided. So there's probably a reason you've never heard this stuff before. I think most know that a divided house cannot stand, you know in between their gardening and fishing.

This should pretty much settle it, then. Even If the process was long and tedious -- and 3 guys were involved in the process -- and if all of the guys were pretty much good and therefore the 1 guy chosen is good (ie, DM doesn't have a problem with him), then so be it.

I thought everything was a process for CBJ, so nothing to see here folks.

Let's Go Vols and win the East !

no one has to speak with anyone to understand that this process drug Blackburn and Fulmer through the public eye as primary candidates for the job at one time or another through the process. If it is true that they were not going to be serious candidates someone should have nipped that long ago.

The chancellor was deeply involved in the discussions since mid-December with boosters and committee members. Rather than drag two long time VFLs around by the nose, cut them loose a long time ago The process was totally mis-management and I suspect that is Doug's point (I haven't listened yet to his broadcast).

Haslam ultimately made the decision. Just like with Dooley... If Currie was not wanted by him, he would not be the AD..
I expect what you say is true, if big Jim wanted Dooley his decision making ability may not be what UT needs. Oh wait does he have a lot of money?!!!

Terrible analogy

Ok, you're hiring someone to run a $100 million business.

Do you:
1) Hire a former employee who was good at sales but never ran a company
2) Hire a former employee who has run a company of about $10 million
or
3) Hire one who has run one of $70 million for about 6 yrs?

The answer is the same; doesn't matter if its building houses, selling lemonade on the corner or running an athletic dept. The best business decision is you hire the person with the best resume, most experience and demonstrated track record vs the unknown.

Currie was more qualified than Blackburn or Fulmer....Bottom Line!!!

Does that mean that Blackburn or Fulmer would have made bad ADs...Not at all!!!

Currie was the most qualified, you always want the most proven and qualified candidate!!!

According to a few people neither Blackburn or Fulmer were ever a real candidate for the job because of no experience at the Power 5 level in the AD position!!!

According to Hyams on 104.5 the Zone this morning, UTK has already lost at least three six figure (or more) donors over this and they've had Manning calling major boosters to try and stop the bleeding.

We have never went out and hired a big time coach.

As long as you don't count Coach Majors. The year before he came to be our HC he won a NC at Pitt while coaching Heisman Trophy winner Tony Dorsett.

Just because CJM is VFL that shouldn't discount his accomplishments as a HC.

He went back to Pitt after leaving the Vols.

I'm sure Haslam will be happy to take care of that lost funding.

I'm beginning to worry about the Haslem family in general. The Browns for instance seem to make one stupid decision after the other. Owners that would have even considered taking Manziel that early have to be ones of huge egos and at least some defiance of listening to reason. The following picks have done nothing to make one think he is a owner that knows what is going on. GBO!!!!!

Probably was told he would be and things were looking good for him.

Nothing is worse than the courtesy interview just to be nice ... both former and Blackburn should've asked if they were under strong consideration if not then don't interview

Courtesy interviews happen all the time. And depending upon who says "no" to an offer and how well a person does in those interviews they may end up with the job.

IMO, the thing that is causing the discord is the playing of these two out in the media.

The Knoxville media is bad, really bad - sometimes I wonder if their goal is to undermine everything that is Tennessee.

Some thoughts:
1) we constantly rave about VN being the best NCAA website, period. How do we know the hiring and firing at other schools is any better or worse?
2) Butch got all his coaches hired without interference. Using the Billary defense, at this point, what difference does it make?

...and this is what happened to Gruden. But I know nothing.

Or it could be that the cats running the show are not as flawless as some want to believe.
