Doug Matthews On Tennessee Vols 2015 Recruiting Class

Doug Mathews, in his show this morning, pointed out a few things that surprised me.

A couple of our current commitments are borderline academically speaking. The recruiting services rarely point out this information. Thus, we could lose a couple players from this recruiting class to the JUCO route. I wonder who those two might be?

Mathews pointed out that the talent level in middle Tennessee is growing at a fast rate. Middle Tennessee has become a recruiting hotbed and programs from all over the nation are working to establish pipelines into the schools in this area. Mathews pointed out that over the next 2-3 years, UT will probably pick up 5 recruits or so from this area and that number could grow as the area grows. The University of Tennessee has never before, had an area within the Volunteer State, where they could pick up so many recruits as they will in the middle Tennessee area. Think about it…..5 out of 20 recruits every year means that 20% of your recruiting class and over four years 20% of your team comes from one area. This is a huge gain and advantage for the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee got a steal in TE, Kyle Oliver. He is big, fast and a late developer overlooked by many big schools until now.

Mathews touched upon the roster and possible Early Enrollees. He pointed out that you can only have 85 scholarships at any one time. What determines the number of Early Enrollees is how many current players will graduate or leave the program in the fall. That will equal the number of Early Enrollees. Tennessee is currently at 85 scholarships.

Woods could eventually be a Juco guy I would assume. It was mentioned a few times earlier in his thread that he was behind grade wise. It could also explain why he continues to visit UT, and quote pics with "my future coach". Technically even if he went the juco route, CBJ could still end up his future HC.

That would nicely make room for Van Jefferson.

Well lets see...

All of our current commits are able to EE except for
Bruce
Woods
Oliver
Picou
Smith
Lovingood
Townsend

So that would mean its 2 of those guys

Good info Tux but with Ferguson gone, I would have thought that would have left us with 84 scholarship players. Did Butch put someone else on scholarship after Ferguson's departure?

I've been a big fan of Matthews for a while now. I think he has more of a rapport with this staff than the previous two, which has made his information more comprehensive and viable.

One thing that I have paid specific attention to is his summer and fall predictions on how good or bad the upcoming season will be. The last 3-4 years he has been spot on, maybe even longer than that. One thing that he has mentioned thus far is how this team will "struggle to be an average SEC team" and that just getting this team to the post season should be considered a success for Coach Jones. While he has not gone into great detail, it is apparent, when he speaks about the future, that we're poised to make a run at the East.

I know it's summer and optimism abounds when there's nothing but recruiting to follow but, I can't remember a season that I've looked forward to this much in a long time...

Evan's Eleven which is the scholarship roster I had been using shows the current scholarship count at 81 and that includes Weatherd.

That is where the "16" number came from I have been using. 12 SRs + 4 more to get to 85 = 16 spots technically available.

Staff signs 24, 8 more kids have to hit the door.

Jones is signing at least 24, so you might as well stop worrying about it.

Good stuff. Did we ever get a clear answer as to how last years numbers worked. Seemed like we went one or two over the limit most thought probable and so far no one has cried foul. Not complaining just curious.

The staff took exactly the number they could w/out over signing and w/out GS/BS anyone.

7 back counts(count toward past classes that were not full) + 25 for the 2014 class. 32 total.

It's looking more and more like this Matthews info was almost spot on.

Go back and read what he said about only taking two QB's in this class. JJ being one of the two QB's. He's now looking at taking three. This class is very fluid :):)
