Doug Matthews just reiterated...

It's got to be a NFL guy.

Why?

1. Pruitt has elite recruiters on staff, no reason to announce the new OC or put him on the recruiting trail this close to ESD, would possibly sidetrack momentum.

2. If it was a current NCAA coach elsewhere it would have leaked, between recruits and previous players/staff someone would say something. Less likely at NFL level since they're in season and focused on the playoff hunt.

3. Most recruits coming to UT already got relationships with their positional coach & Pruitt. QB is the only position new OC can really help with, but again it's too close to ESD to build any relationship with recruits. Bailey is a 2020 class guy so he has over a year to build a rapport with whoever the new OC ends up being.

My thoughts at least...#StayingDelusionallyPositive

Also to be fair, if it is a NFL guy these other interviews could be vetting & background checking. Or could be no interviews are even going on...Pruitt is very heavily recruiting so I am unsure how much time he has.

That’s all well and good if it’s true. If it’s not and Matthews is just covering for his buddy then he should be done forever. I want to belong it’s Chip Long but I just don’t see how it could be kept quiet.

I'm gonna guess (assuming he's right) it has something to do with a current contract by the OC or they have an agreement not to announce by the wish of whoever they are hiring. It's not a hold up on UTs end they have no reason to hold it up.

Like some deep sense of respect and loyalty that the OC might have with his current HC for some reason?

What is he covering?

He just said on 104.5 the zone that they already know who they are hiring. Same thing he said last week. Still saying it's already taken care of and TN fans can R-E-L-A-X (I'm paraphrasing)

He also went on to say that interviews continue simply to get information. Not to hire someone.

Most of recruiting is about relationships. You're just not going to sway hardly any recruits with an OC hire late in the recruiting season. Possibly if someone is on the fence it might put them over but it's almost zero impact. There is almost no advantage to a quick hire except for possibly losing out to another school hiring them.

I don’t know if you can sway a player in your favor but you can certainly lose out a guy who is wavering or is on the fence. I agree that the personal relationship with the position coach and HC is really the most important thing.

I'm not sure I believe that Matthews has the inside scoop. But I do remember when Briles' contract came out, he had signed with Houston maybe a month before he was even leaked to be on the list to be interviewed.

I cannot see it being a current college OC or Coor. I mean there is 0 reason you wouldn't name them now. Just because you name them does not mean you have to pull your recruiter off the trips. You can date the agreements however needed so that to me is a BS response from Matthews. Seems to me like the more plausible hire is NFL.

I certainly haven't been in the "panic crowd", but this is the weirdest coordinator search I've ever seen. They've "hired someone", but they are "still interviewing" to "get information"?

That sounds a lot like they haven't hired someone.
Again, you are basing this statement on the media provided information. Absolutely NO ONE from the administration has verified or denied ANY of the numerous candidates. There are several media "Know it alls" that have been throwing manure against the bricks to see what sticks.

For chits and giggles, if the New OC and or his current employer has requested that we don't announce his hiring until (date)...what are some acceptable reasons?

He very well may be able to. I just don't think a guy who's never been a coach at the college level, let alone an OC, being hired by a guy who had never been a HC at the college level, who was hired by a guy who had never been an AD at any level is a very good combination. I am still hoping it's a seasoned guy with college coaching experience.

I believe you have a fairly narrow view of experience.

I think a coach who has been coaching HS football for 30-40 years and doing it very successfully would have quite a bit of experience that could be applied to the collegiate level. Leadership of any type is a people game. He could not win like he does if he was not skilled at relating to players and teaching the game.

I think CJP has been around a few good HCs. He has to have some idea what he's doing.

Surely a coach who was a face of the university athletic department for 17 years and worked directly for and with the AD would have a decent sense of the AD's role.
