Doug Matthews Blunt Take On Vols Loss

How about recruiting only non-non scholarship players. Then tell them, play hard and you'll earn a scholarship.

O.K., I'll leave now. (But, they DID eventually make my solar powered flashlight. The battery was the missing piece to my design.)

It is a shame UT can't hire a coach that is capable of making players their own or getting them to buy in.

It's Fulmers players when Kiffin was hired.

It's Kiffin's players when Dooley was hired.

It's Dooley's players when Jones was hired.

Now it's Jones fault Pruitt can't get through to his team and has been humiliated the past 3 games.

Yes. This is all correct, that’s how college sports work in regards to changing coaches.

I don’t think you made the point you planned on making here.

I think it’s very complex, and frankly beyond my level of comprehension as a 64 year old man. Young people today are not all like they were back when I was a kid. I believe that back then many youngsters longed to play for a particular university. Now, maybe not so much. Today it’s basically all about them. Which school gives them the best option into the NFL (if they’re talented enough)? Which school offers the most playing time? Which school offers the most (ahem) fringe benefits if you get my drift...

Do you think think Jalen Hurts was an Alabama fan? Is Tua? I mean an Alabama fan...not a Saban fan. I’m not sure anymore. I do believe that Jake Fromm was, and still is, a Georgia fan, he plays like one, and probably would have gone there regardless of the coach, but that’s just speculation on my part. I do understand that Trevor Lawrence was a Tennessee fan, but chose to attend Clemson to further his NFL career. Can we blame them?

The days of tough, in-your-face coaches may be over unless it’s a sure ticket into the NFL. Today many young men, good and bad, will just pack their bags and go somewhere else when the going gets tough. Jacob Eason, Justin Fields, and yes, even Jalen Hurd comes to mind. It’s just different....

Point I was making is that UT has a penchant for hiring coaches who can find blame anywhere but themselves when their team falls flat on their collective faces. And fans such as yourself appear to fall lock step in with that thinking.

Sure, Pruitt paid lip service to accountability during the press conference yet we are right back to talking about his team being someone else's players by mid week.

Same age here and I agree. So many of these kids move around between states and schools. To stay in one place for a family is getting rare. They grow up as free agents. One day we'll be watching robots play.

I am sure Fulmer has a contingency plan but he is going to give CJP every chance he possibly can because he hired the guy. Fulmer is a big part of our suck right now.

I agree except I think it's because he doesn't want to have yet another big payout.

My goodness. I surely hope not!

I mean, it's definitely not my favorite scenario, or even in my top 30. However, promoting Tee to HC, keeping Chaney as OC, and bringing back Chief seems exactly like what Fulmer would do. And while I don't think it's the long term answer by any means, couldn't be much worse than what we're doing now

I think that's how it always has been. Was Peyton a Tennessee fan when he committed here or a Cutcliffe/Fulmer fan? It isn't a good or a bad thing...that's just how it is.

The only kids who are pre-existing fans of the program are kids who grew up fans of the team or legacy recruits.

Can we STOOOPPP with the contingency plans and the next coach talk?

The man has coached 13 games, and his upperclassmen are still Butch’s players from a 4-8 season.

Good grief y’all.
Are you saying you want Stoops as the new coach?

It’s not realistic. The coach decides the plan and who will play. Some players will say, “What’s in it for me?” Often, the answer is ... not much.

They should transfer. Other times they stay and poison the well.

Over a year into it, you'd think Pruitt could have figured out who his poison pills were.

There's more Pruitt players than Butch players at this point. If we're running down the list, how many of Butch's players are starting compared to Pruitt's? Not like we're starting all Freshman. Some of Butch's players are contributing fine.

TL;DR
There's more to it than just blaming Butch or his players.

Pruitt pissed the team off late last year and its started out the same this season. As much as I wanted Pruitt to be successful, I'm not sure he knows how to be a head coach.
If they are pissed at him, then hit the road. Go somewhere where they can be happy little campers.
