Doug Mathews Big Orange Sunday in a nutshell after KY game

Every time I hear how long it takes to rebuild in the SEC I want to puke. There are far too many examples that contradict that assertion. Prior to this season, Arkansas had lost 20 consecutive SEC games prior to this year, so there is NO bigger rebuild than Arkansas right now. And all Sam Pittman has done is come in and be one bad call from a ref away from 3-1 in the SEC. The right guy gets immediate results with the roster he inherited

I backed Pruitt on his conservative policy on JG. But that was based on his play NOT GETTING US BEAT. Yesterday’s kicked that thinking out of the window! He effectively put us down 14-0 and Shrout added 3. That’s all Kentucky needed and then the defense saw nothing from the offense in the second half and caved. That’s not winning philosophy.

Nope.

They have a quandary.
JG is forcing their hand. And while a change has to happen, that road is gonna be a bumpy ride.

Last year was last year and things are different now.

The lack of strong WR play has been pointed out by multiple talking heads at this point. It’s easy to gang up on the QB but our QBs are not getting help from our WRs. They caved against tougher defensive back units.

They won’t be able to out-muscle bama’s secondary either. This is where one of the recruiting gaps really shine. Our passing game is not respected at all. No matter who starts at QB next week, they won’t look good with nothing to throw to.

Gonna be Ugly I fear
I know they are inexperienced, but i have to wonder if the effects of inaccuracies that last few years have changes what they deem a open WR..because we havent been able to throw guys open....a 6 inch window with an accurate QB is an open WR....i think our reporter think that unless the WR is 3 yards away from a DB them he is not open

I agree with the poster who said if we had run every play of the 2nd half we may have won. JG put us in a hole early but that responding drive of running Gray down their throat wore them down. The game was lost after the three and out on opening possession of 2nd half
Makes no sense. Eventually the defense will bring up more than you can block. Our RBS are not fast enough, strong enough, nor elusive enough to think they can be your whole offense.

100% and no fan except the delusional expected to be the best in the east or sec....we expected respectable game the big 3...now year 4 we need to compete with everyone. Period

As important as the opening drive of the 2nd half was, I can’t believe we didn’t go for the 4th and 1. If we had scored on that opening drive it would have been a 3 point game. We proved earlier we could run the ball.

He is injured and discussed on VN for several weeks.
It was discussed that he was slowed by the hamstring in preseason practice, but my assumption - which may be completely off base - was that after a month or two of not really hearing about it, he was back at 100%.

CJP will still be here no doubt.

However he has proven he cannot keep his teams motivated.

He has proven he cannot instill discipline.

He has proven his stubbornness and unwillingness to adapt and adjust.

He has proven his teams (at least parts of them) will quit on him.

He has proven he needs more talent to do less, while other coaches often do more, with less.

By all means when Pruitt has actually done something......hey say it loud....call him the man.....but he hasn’t done squat yet.
I think all criticisms are fair game, but I don't know that you can say his teams quit after watching the 2019 season.

It's just incredibly bizarre the faith that pruitt has in JG. Everyone can see that he is not an SEC QB, or any sort of QB really. Maybe for whatever team plays against nashville school for the blind, but that's still iffy. The spread in that game probably would favor JG's team. I project maybe JG -13 in that game? But i'd still put money on Nashville School for the Blind.

Anyway...i went on a tangent.

JG's teammates don't even like him. It's so painfully obvious. WHY does he keep doing this to himself. More importantly, why does he keep doing this to the fanbase?

Truth. All this nonsense about it takes time is silly. The right guy can adapt and get it done until his players and culture are in place. Every coach we have had since Kiffin comes in and keeps trying to pound that square peg in a round hole and end up getting a buyout and ride into the sunset.

Even Chizik got it done in year two. We just strike out on literally every coach.

I think you misunderstood, or I was ambiguous.

I don’t mean they have or will totally quit on him and everything that may go along with that, forever or for the entire season.

However during games in 2018, 2019, and Saturday players have shown they will quit.....they will put forth less effort, and at least to me.....at times, coaches and players seem to give in to defeat before defeat happens.

So far I’ve only seen this during “games” not for a season. I also believe many folks have seen this.

I'm not saying he hasn't done a good job, but their 2 wins have been against 2 other rebuilding jobs. The win over MSU was impressive at the time, now less so. And Ole Miss is an extra point away from 0-4.

I don’t think the quit totally, as in for the whole season. But I do think each week JG gets the nod the offense, and even more so the defense knows the coach is just kicking them in their balls, so it’s hard to get motivated. Add to that when JP goes to the press and makes excuses for JG, but then wants to talk down about the defense. Sure the defense needs work, but every defense does. Stop acting like they are our biggest problem. There’s only so much they can do, and only so long they can mentally keep putting up with it.

It’s like having the one employee stay late because he’s your hard worker, while letting your half a— guy go home early...and both are salary employees. Eventually the hard worker will resent you when his hard work isn’t rewarded with a promotion, and his production will fall off.

Yeah. If anyone other than #2 walks out there on the field for our first offensive series, I will eat my hat.

Only time another QB will walk out there is after we are totally out of this game.
Didnt Dobber have a baptism by farr?

Let's hope this'ern is just as good.

You would think the coaches could create a separation with a scheme we have some fast wide receivers.

All of the problems we are having that Pruitt himself has pointed to with the exception of JG choosing to eat dirt as opposed to forcing plays can be addressed with better S&C (and technique). Some are citing COVID as a reason for our poor S&C, I am not so sure.

I am. I think it’s technique and execution. They’re all strong and fast enough.

  • There WILL be an immediate change at QB. Number 15 most likely.
  • CJP is still the right guy, rebuilding a program is tough in this league.
  • Our Defense is improving, even though we can't cover the slant.
  • Young players in the waning moments of the KY game showed some promise.
  • Only 3 out of 4 drives of significance for us in the second half. Offense couldn't deliver.
  • Pruitt's Sunday will be spent with Offensive staff.
  • Receivers can't get any separation and haven't all season.
  • Inability to deliver splash plays (down the field) makes life easy for other teams DC.
  • Dumb penalties.. lack of discipline.
  • To early to give up. Last 5 games will tell the tale of the season.

Feel free to add to this list. This is just off the top of my head after listening to the show.
are you sure you listened? Mathews said that none of the quarterbacks are ready and that JG gives us the best chance to win. also, he said there were 0 drives of significance in the 2nd half, as we only got the ball 4 times after halftime.

If they throw Bailey out there vs Bama with his limited reps/experience, I'll be disappointed. Not fair to the kid and you risk nuking his confidence.
