So not only are the QBs bad but we have WRs that cannot get separation. Great. Grand. Thats been a problem dating back to Botch Jones. Well if we dont have veteran WRs that can get separation then throw the young guys out there. Beckwith, Wideman, Hyatt, Holliday, Calloway. Just play these freaking guys already.
Ok. To address the separation issue we have. This is due to JG. He's not a timing quarterback. Or a spot thrower. So the receivers aren't doing a ten yard curl and the ball on the way as they quick break, turning and catching and pressuring the defense. They are running the route directed, the cb just watches and runs with. They make the break, the ball isn't there, the cb just recovers his gap and JG can't throw it without interference. It's aided by the fact that he's staring down the receiver from the snap, so the safety/linebacker slides over to cover as well. There is no room when the QB can't anticipate, telegraph's the route. You can see him start to pump up for the throw when the break is coming, easy timing for any competent average safety to read and time.
When we think of separation. We think of Marvin Harrison blowing past the DB and the safety out of alignment, Peyton hitting the gap or going over the top. That is set up by Marvin earlier not flying his route, but rather curling or breaking and Manning having the ball in his hands moments after the break. That makes the cb commit to the break or get beat deep. Peyton and Marvin set it up and read it together. The reason the safety of out of position, Peyton was off looking him to the other side, or on a crossing route. Using his eyes and shoulders to steer him away from where he wants the open field to be.
A good quarterback also on the handoff to the running back continues his motion as if he's going to throw or roll out. Pausing the secondary/linebackers a moment. Later on when he fakes the handoff and does the same motions, the coverage has to guess, run or pass, pausing themselves for a moment. This creates areas for the receivers to get open. JG does none of this. His handoffs are obvious. His fakes are even more so. He directs the coverage to the target area. Throws late. Incorrect touch for the throw. The only pass he's been consistent at. The lob, jump, which is effective at times, but not a go to pass every play.
With a better QB, other issues should autocorrect. The new guy will make mistakes, but his abilities should open up the offense from the grip the defense has had for so many games.
