Doug Mathews Big Orange Sunday in a nutshell after KY game

Something has got to be up with Maurer. It makes no sense that he started last year but didn’t see the field yesterday.
This is just pure speculation, but Maurer may still be dealing with some personal demons. Remember in the off-season when he opened up about struggling with depression and suicide awareness. Maybe that's why the situation surrounding him has been so vague. Maybe the hamstring injury and contact tracing were smokescreens to protect his privacy. Whatever the case may be, I feel bad for the kid cause he does have talent and gives spark to the offense when he plays.

Because he is on the injury list with a hamstring the last 3 weeks. BM is the only backup who has gotten reps (spring) and was probably expected to be primary backup but has been sidelined all 3 games.

The lack of strong WR play has been pointed out by multiple talking heads at this point. It’s easy to gang up on the QB but our QBs are not getting help from our WRs. They caved against tougher defensive back units.

They won’t be able to out-muscle bama’s secondary either. This is where one of the recruiting gaps really shine. Our passing game is not respected at all. No matter who starts at QB next week, they won’t look good with nothing to throw to.

Gonna be Ugly I fear

The fans got caught up in a winning streak, thought things were decent. That is an understandable mistake by fans.

But not by highly paid coaches. JG was always mediocre, the winning streak made some forget. That the coaches weren't working on a replacement, with urgency, is quite the failure.

I see why JP stuck with JG after having great games against UK and MO last year, even though he reverted to old form against VU and IND. He's got some talent and a good arm, but is indeed a head case. He needs to hit the portal asap, clear his head, get a sports psychologist, and go play at a smaller school next year.

That kid was actually instrumental to our success last year. Even if he came in for only a couple of series a game, he provided a spark and kinda snapped everybody out of their lull, plus the way he played was erratic but explosive which threw off defenses a little bit. We don't have that spark from last year.

Well some of it is due to our routes are long developing but JG has no time to throw either by that point. It’s more than just one issue
Did you ever think that our routes are long developing because that is the only pass the staff feels somewhat comfortable throwing with this qb? He has a slow, long delivery and release cycle. That's assuming he understands and reads the defense and processes correctly. Our greatest success for the pass 3 years has been to send people long and let the receivers out climb and out battle the defenders for the ball. He is also great at the flair dump off pass to the back dragging out the back side and the mini handoff one foot pass - sweeping around the end. He handicaps the play calling imho.

I agree with the poster who said if we had run every play of the 2nd half we may have won. JG put us in a hole early but that responding drive of running Gray down their throat wore them down. The game was lost after the three and out on opening possession of 2nd half

That's when I cut off the TV and started playing Call of Duty: War Zone.

Receivers not getting separation has been a core problem since Dooleys WR recruits left.
We have speed guys on the team even if they are freshman. V. Jones has speed. The only thing we have him do is reverses which is predictable. Play Jones, Hyatt, Wideman , Calloway, Holliday and Johnson. Get the guys up to speed this week. I noticed last night when reviewing some of the routes in the game that all our routes on a given play are about 15 yards or less. A play design should have at least one go route or deep post/out in every play. That keeps the defenses honest.

Im pretty sure one of the Insiders in the recruiting forum has confirmed that Maurer is an absolute head case right now. Dont see him seeing the field unless he gets his act right.

Sad to hear this. I did not feel like he had the temperment to lead as a QB, but I did not know the background and it makes me feel for the young man. Perhaps a program/conference with less pressure?

I do think Bailey is going to get the nod now

Pruitt isn’t dead to me yet. I believe if we can get good to average QB play we will be a top 25 team. The significance of having 3 straight drives end with interceptions can’t be overstated, not to mention JG randomly fumbling. This one of the few times the reason for a loss can be isolated down to one position

I mentioned this in another thread but during the off season there were reports where Maurer had medications changed due to depression. One story was how he met with people demonstrating that once your meds are straightened out you can bounce back very effectively. Then during camp an injury, then Covid quarantine, so this could be a story of the body is ready but the head may not be. The last thing the staff would want to do is feed something that would cause him to be more depressed or risk that, so perhaps it's something like that, I'm purely speculatiing, based on info available to the public that is different about BM last year to this year, doing a stare and compare.

All of this is so obvious to everyone. (Except- Pruitt is the right guy. That's yet to be determined) I'd like to hear from Matthews: 1) why are communication problems still happening? 2) why are there bad habits continuing in year 3?

I don’t think it’s really fair to him to go there.

Just my opinion, but I don't think it has to do with pressure concerning playing in a tough conference. He seemed pretty confident every time his number was called, so much so that his over-confidence caused him to make some costly mistakes and get himself injured.

Put Weinke on 30 days notice. Fix it or you are gone.
Put Tee on notice, fix it, or you are gone in January.
Only closers get coffee.
He could fire Weinke tonight, and I would feel it has been supremely justified.
