Doug Marrone

Probably his big east conference title and making it to the AFC championship game?

Butch Jones also tied for the Big East. How impressive is that accomplishment? Especially when Marrone did it with an 8-5 squad.

His Jags team that choked away the AFC Championship was really good, but outside of that year, his NFL coaching record is 21-30.

What is so impressive: his .500 record at Syracuse, or his 31-36 record in the NFL?
We could do well here, alot better than the 1 win we will see this year. Whats wrong, the bama boards not buzzing after that nailbiting 42 point win yesterday?

So what successful, sitting head coach do you suggest UT hire? You think Stoops or Urban would actually take this job? We've already been turned down by Gundy(at least twice), Patterson, Gruden, Mullen, and probably several I'm forgetting.

Or maybe I could put it another way. Given we're still on the hook to Butch and his staff and perhaps Dooley(I'm not sure he's paid off yet), and we're going to be facing over $16 mil in buyouts for Pruitt and his staff, who could we afford to hire as a replacement?

I'll hang up and listen.

Add Charlie Strong, Larry Fedora, and Mike Tomlin to the list

He will probably be fired by Jacksonville this year and he's said Tennessee is his ultimate dream job. He has a relationship with Fulmer.

Marrone was a not so good staffer on one of Phillip's teams, whose positioon underperformed, causing the team to underperform offensively.

Marrone is son-in-law to Boots Donelly, former MTSU quarterback/HC/AD. He is the guy who replaced Jimmy Ray Stevens (who had previously coached for Spurrier,) who had replaced Mike Barry---Barry's being the guy who Pro HOF member Anthony Munoz had as a USC position coach...and who was present and producing in the 1998 team's championship team.

Barry and Fulmer may have clashed---reports from people I trust said so---and Barry took up residence elsewhere, for Stephens/Stevens to show up. Barry's responsibilities seemed to have been diced up, from reports, while he was at UT.

Marrone coached one year under Phillip Fulmer, the one which thought UT would win the SEC championship again; but the OL seemed to underperform. Certainly Marrone's record as a HC is not good.

Marrone went to Syracuse, I think, then kicked around, then HC in Buffalo, until he appeared in JAX.
IMO his position players and teams were not in Fulmer (or Barry's) league.
Marrone would be a downgrade from Butch Jones---or at the same level.

UT's inability to produce a competent HC from the myriad of great UT players is a mystery to me. But who would want to come to UT, knowing what the powers that be do to coaches who have done great things.

What was Saban’s again?

Better than Marrone's, actually. And I assume you aren't daft enough to be asking about his college record before heading to the NFL.

Nope. Wasn’t talking about his Toledo and Michigan State experiences... just his NFL experience.

Marrone is a guy I think could succeed at UT. Let's let this play out with Pruitt first though. The decisions he makes going forward concerning personnel will seal his fate.

So you're comparing Marrone's tenure as a head coach to Saban's as a DC?

You have a terrible argument, but I admire you for being so aggressive about it.
Both failed in the NFL, Marrones sample size in college to date is small however it was successful at Syracuse. I also included Carroll in that argument, along with Kiffin.

I have a pretty good argument and I admire your ignorant Alabama arrogance.

Carroll was over .500 in the NFL before his time at USC. While by no means amazing, I wouldn't consider his first run a failure. He was better than Marrone at the very least.

Kiffin was certainly a failure in the NFL, but he also hasn't been some kind of roaring success in college. So I'm not sure what you are hoping to get out of that comparison.

Again, I admire you for being so wrong, yet so thoroughly lacking in doubt.

Marrone is not far off Carroll's pace. He coach 2 really bad Buffalo teams and took over a Jacksonville team that has never been any good and almost took them to the Super Bowl.

Kiffin was headed for success here and the wheels fell off at USC due to sanctions.

And you, again with the arrogance. Serious question, why do you even come here?

For conversations like this.

I make it habit to study the direct correlation between how terrible someone's argument is and how "arrogant" I suddenly become.

The OL underperformed in his 1 year? The same OL that produced a 200 yard rusher on the road in Gainesville? The same OL that would have been playing for another Natty if not for Stallworths fumble and Chavis defense *****ing the bed in the SECCG? Hell Marrone was such an unimpressive assistant here that 4 years later he got hired by one of the brightest offensive minds in the NFL (Sean Payton) as his OC. Wanna bet that Sean Payton is a better judge of coaching talent than you are?? You sound like a jealous ex girlfriend.

I wouldn’t run to buy season tickets, but given the current landscape, we could do a lot, lot worse.
