I remember hearing the story of how he built up Tennessee after Bowden Wyatt was let go. (Another run into the ground story) Then he secretly flew to Florida and interviewed the week before his last bowl game to FLORIDA then threw the bowl game (supposedly). I also remember hearing that he was jealous of Majors taking the AD position but that he did a good job of keeping U.T. off of probation. I do remember being at a game in 04 or 05 and he was announced on the field and heard lots and lots of loud boos. But, his son sure did pull through for the 85 season!

Okkkk, that is about 80% accurate with no particular point. Are you trying out for a job with the Knoxville News-Sentinal?

I thought he did a great job as AD, with an obvious bias toward the football program while ignoring the others

Dickey was a very good coach here. Dickey as Athletic Director was ok. His football decisions were above average but not elite. Basketball decisions were horrible and baseball with Delmonico was a very good shot in the arm for the time. The revolving doors of basketball coaches was his weakest link. His strongsuit was definitely managing the NCAA. Dickey had a very good relationship with the NCAA hence keeping our program out of hot water. As a side point yes his son Darryl finsished an incredible season. I still wish the injury didn't happen to Tony Robinson for what it's worth.

LOL.. No, just wondering what everyones view of Dickey is/was?

I was never quite able to forgive him for moving to Florida. But he did ok with the football program, stayed out of Pat's way with the Lady Vols, bumbled and stumbled with men's basketball. I would rate Dickey's work as an AD as a C. He was a better coach in my opinion. I would probably score him with a B+ as a coach.

He did bring UT out of the dark ages when he had the courage to ditch the outmoded single wing, recruited black players and put the power T on the helmets.

When did Majors take the AD position?

Since we're talking about Dickey, he was probably the best coach at UT besides Neyland up to this point. That being said, he stabbed UT in the back much worse than Kiffin. I was SURPRISED when he got the AD gig at UT considering what he had done to them in 1969.

Dickey also let the basketball program slide to the lowly depths. It has been speculated the reason he allowed the basketball program to slide was because Dickey was somewhat jealous of Mears' popularity while they were coaches at UT.

Have you had your hearing checked? :)
