Quinten Dormady vs Jarrett Guarantano.

So how are we expecting this QB competition to play out exactly? With Dobbs obviously returning one more season I just don't see Butch retaining both of these guys. As of now Dormady is the front runner once Dobbs graduates. I don't see a guy with as much potential as Guarantano sitting for three years waiting his turn over Dormady. Unless Dormady balls out his junior year and goes pro and even then that'd still leave Guarantano sitting two years.

Thoughts?

Guarantano will be the successor to Dobbs. His skillset is a better match for the offense.

He's the starter opening game 2017.

hopefully the QB that provides the best chance of winning plays regardless of whose feelings may get hurt.

Dormady will be the back up this year. Guarantano will RS. I think Dormady wins the job in 2017 and we just have to hope Guarantano is content with being number two and getting the garbage snaps. Butch takes a mid level type guy in 2017 who will RS and be recruited over the second Lawrence commits and arrives.

There is a reason Gurantano is the top player at his position. He will start when Dobbs leaves and may be number 2 next year.

Injuries happen. Hopefully, they're both as good as advertised and ready to represent UT. I think they will both be good for us.

Lol
You just might have thought about this particular subject too much. :)

One of the best things I've heard coach Shoop talk about since becoming a Vol is that it is his job to tailor his scheme to the talents of his players. I know we won't change the offense completely, but I'm sure there is some room to make the offense more Dormady friendly. Competition is good for the team and I hope it's a close one.

I'd kinda hate to start a freshman qb, but if proves to be the better play, so be it,

Omg....people are always assuming the next hot shot QB coming in "must" be better than our #2. Dormady is a stud. His passing game will be off the charts (wait and see). Those who think we have to have a Dobbs type QB in this system are simply wrong. I love Dobbs...but his mobility is the "only" reason he's our starter...that's his strength. I mean face it...his throw game is average AT BEST! (again..I love the guy, but..). I think some will be pleasantly surprised at what Dormady brings to the field. And yes...he's mobile enough to still keep defenses honest. Jerrett will get his shot, but it will not be next year. He WILL NOT trump Dormady as our back up.

It's a nice problem to have. I do think that Dormady's talents are sold short on VN. He will make somebody a good college quarterback.

We'll have an idea in September.

There are many reasons Dobbs starts over Dormady. Mainly him being a way better qb. Dormady hasn't shown in game he can pass any better than Dobbs. He looked mediocre against NU and completed a lower percentage than Dobbs did for the year. Even though he faced only back ups.

There is a reason Dormady was the lowest rated qb we have. He isn't Josh rosen or something. Gurantano could be a Deshaun Watson tough. Similar ranking, skill-set and talent.

Maybe you should join another site buddy if you hate pro-Tennessee points of view.

Been a Vol fan since 74'. I'm not going anywhere. I'm all about pro-Tennessee points of view. Yours are usually bordering on delusional though. Watson & Dobbs are clones my man!!! 👍🏻

Barring injury, JG will RS this fall. In healthy programs, good QB's wait their turn and good QB's assent to being back ups.

I won't even pretend to know which of these guys will take over after Dobbs. But if the Vol program gets healthy, it won't be unusual to see even highly regarded QB's not start until their 3rd or 4th year in the program. It also won't be uncommon to see a guy like Dormady stay as a back up should JG win out.

JG is the first true Dual-threat guy in a LONG time to come to UT.... imagine someone who can run like Dobbs, and can actually throw...accurately.... unfortunately I believe Dormady will stay a backup at UT. Dobbs leaves and JG has had a year in the system to watch and develop and then he will run the offense like a champ.

He's the starter opening game 2017.

The offense is evolving and as time passes you will see more of Debord's fingerprints. The offense is no longer handicapped by having to force a round peg into a square hole. Debord can make Dormady fit nicely. The biggest concern is Azzani as passing (throw game) coordinator.

So Dobbs is a "way better QB"....why??... Because he's dynamic with his feet!!! He struggles sometimes with even routine throws! Not knocking him...I love the guy. But I hope you're not basing your opinion of Dormady on spot mop up duty with 2nd teamers. Dormady will put up ridiculous passing yards when he gets his shot. And I doubt you'll see our wideouts suggesting they're frustrated like they were this year.

You cannot reasonably make this comparison. If Dobbs had been injured giving Dormady the chance to take the starter's practice reps and settle in with an O designed around his skill set then he would have performed better.

Dobbs does start for a lot of reasons not the least of which is he is the current leader of the O. But he doesn't have the pure arm talent of QD or JG.

What do you mean by "lowest rated"? If you mean recruit rankings then you are mistaken.
