"Under terms of his contract signed March 3, 2010, Tennessee would owe Dooley $5 million if he were fired prior to Feb. 16, 2013. The figure drops to $4 million in 2014-15 and to $2.5 million after Feb. 15, 2015. Those reckless, extravagant figures were approved by then-athletics director Mike Hamilton, president Joe DiPietro and the university trustees."

These numbers are just too large to dismiss Dooley any time soon. The lawyer prevailed over Mike Hamilton...

Why the heck would you guys have put that in the contract for a coach who was 17-20 in his career?????

And why the heck would you have the date AFTER NSD???

He knew what he was getting into here at UT. He knew that he wouldnt win immediately and wanted to cover his ass. He knew everyone would be calling for his head sooner rather than later. Cant say that I blame him.

That being said, dumb move on Hamiltons part. Im ashamed to have the same last name as that idiot.

Because pretty much no one would take the job and Dooley knew that it would be a multi year task. We didn't have a whole lot of choice and even Dooley wasn't coming here withough a guarantee of 4-5 years to get it turned around.

Your coach said it would be "nearly impossible " to win at ut for the 1st 2yrs and the fans wouldn't put up with it. He was offered the same buy out and said no thanks.

So he can have another disastrous season in '12 and still walk with a 5m bonus if we drop him before Feb '13? Hamilton got taken to school on that contract negotiation.

Per year for the duration of his contract.

I would think it would be a one-time payoff. Your calculation would be twice what he makes in annual salary. That would be ludicrous. On second thought, it was Hamilton who negotiated the contract.

It all started with a weak buyout with Kiffin of $800,00 which he burned us on. That is part of the reason why Dooley's buyout is so high.

As I understood it, Kiffy had to pay UT when he left? IF Dooley left on his own, would he pay UT?

No way in heck that is right. It's 5 million total paid out over the duration of his contract.

While not 100%, I was pretty sure thats right. Anyone know where to find a copy of his contract. It was posted on here but im too lazy to look for it.

no it's not right. That's the total sum but they would likely negotiate how it would be paid out. See previous UT examples
