Dooley vs. Spurrier

In the wake of SEC Media Days, it just occurred to me that Steve Spurrier hasn’t made any smartass remarks about UT’s football coach since the hiring of Derek Dooley. He hasn’t been this quiet about a UT head man since before Fulmer took over the reins. Could it be that he’s intimidated by Dooley’s superior intellect or is he just holding his tongue until the Vols once again embarrass SC on the field?

I don't think Spurrier even cares much anymore. One or two more years at SC and he will retire and take Lou Holtz position the ESPN gameday show he does (and I will be happy about that).

He can't really talk crap anymore because his teams at SC can't back it up on the field like he was able to at Florida.

Much unlike many in our own fan base, I think the rest of the SEC genuinely respect Dooley. They are probably like the rest of us in taking a wait and see for the product on the field. I think they are glad to see someone in the position with respect for the history and tradition of the SEC. Our brief experiment last year was unsettling to the entire conference.

Spurrier certainly seemed deflated during his Q/A session. He's become humble in his old-age. Losing will do that to people. The fact that he hasn't had one single successful QB says he's probably lost his touch.

Seems like Spurrier has been hanging his hat on Garcia for awhile now,All those Qbs Spurrier had at Florida its sad that he cant even recruit a Decent Quarterback.

I gotta admit, that would be great if Spurrier took over for Holtz at ESPN. I'm so sick of hearing that Shouth Carolina is going to win the eShEC.

Agreed, I'm tired of wiping my TV down after Lou speaks, but for a better dryer Lou Holtz check out his book. Its actually very good and just found out his "leadership" DVD is going for $800 on Amazon............geez !

Easy now . . . have you ever heard that high pitched squeak of his? He sounds like Alvin the chipmunk with a mountain accent.

Spurrier did brag about them only having one arrest in two years. Not sure if that was a dig at UT or not.

Spurrier loves golf and has his membership at Augusta. I think he has his eyes squarely on retirement.

yeah im not going to lie, i have always been a secret spurrier fan. he is one of us and he was born about a couple miles down the highway from me so i always have had respect for what he has done. i just hate that he will end his legacy at a crappy school like south carolina.... he would be GREAT on college gameday and espn....and im sure he would love it bc he can still yap and play as much golf as he wants...

I don't think it was a shot at UT. I think he has to dig deep to find something positive to bring up.

He looks like a guy that's one visor-throw away from taking his ball and going home.

+1. His confidence was such he must have thought he could turn USC into the new Florida after the Redskins. Recruiting just doesn't work like that, unfortunately.

Still, he took a program already at a zenith under Holtz and made it a little better. He's a great coach.

I don't think it was as much the QB as it was all that talent around him in FL. Saban has made an average QB look great the last two years with all the talent.

Perfect. With that sense of his voice have you ever considered studying other celebrity voices and becoming an impressionist on the comedy circuit?

I would not be surprised to see South Carolina somehow win the SEC East and then Spurrier retire this year, if that happens.

Even if Spurrier took a dig at UT, I think that he knows Dooley is not going to provide sound bites and engage in that stuff. He probably figures why waste the time.

When asked about his lack of trash talk this week, Spurrier said "...we don't win enough for me to be cocky." (Paraphrasing)

Spurrier's been beaten down by all of the disappointments at SC. I think he has been humbled by the fact that he's never been able to sit back and let the recruits come to him, like it was when he was at UF, and the fact that the culture at SC has--and always will be--somewhat of a "find a way to lose" mentality, instead of the opposite, which Spurrier is (was?) accustomed to.

And until SC does anything of merit in the SEC, they'll always have that mentality.

Then, you must have been born in Florida, like Spurrier.
Although he did star in several sports for Science Hill High School during the time his family lived in my hometown of Johnson City. As a rabid UT fan and Johnson City native, it's still difficult to go back home to this day and see the landmarks bearing the name Steve Spurrier.
