Dooley speaks with Fulmer (CBS College Sports)

Did anybody else notice Fulmer not once looking up to the screen congratulating Dooley on today? When he did finally look up it was when he criticized him for not getting enough DL. Over a year later and he's still upset. Dooley on the other hand is a class act.

I noticed the same thing, but I respectively disagree with the conclusion. That was a tough opening for Fulmer. My guess is he was reading for the most part and wanted to get it right. He did say that they spoke off camera first, so I think their relationship has started off well. I think and hope that CDD reached out to the Fulmster early and for good reason.

Overall, I can't help but be excited after watching this interview for multiple reasons.

While I wish we were able to address a couple areas today, it was a fantastic day. I'm excited to be a Vol today.

"You've always been a fan of mine." LOL

Yes, I noticed that too. He got that backwards. He meant to say I have always been a fan of you.

I like Fulmer and he was a great coach as long as he could get the great players. When NC, SC, GA, and AL got good coachs and he could not get the recruits, things changed. I still like him and there is no reason to hate him. I do not think he was disrespecting Dooley by looking down. It was as mentioned just because he was on camera and he is not an expert at that. If he had been in the studio with Dooley, he would not have done that.

I enjoyed the interview and liked everything Fulmer had to say. Now that that's out of the way...

Dooley should have responded to Fulmer's "Who is gonna play DT?" question with "Well coach Fulmer you left me with crap at that position, so you tell me"

That was great...It actually made me smile to see Coach Fulmer happy....Dooley looked like he really appreciated what he said.

obviously Phil reads these boards to realize our shortcomings of this class at DT.

Wait, maybe he posts here....

Ok ok the gig is up. I have a confession to make. I'm Coach Fulmer. I thought if I made everyone think I was in south ga I could pull it off. Oh well. Now if you would be so kind to excuse me, Vicky beckons. And if you have any questions concerning my tenure as HC at UT we will have to go back and watch the film. :)

Actually aren't some of Fulmers 2008 D Line recruits about ready to hit the field now that Big Dan is done?

It sounded to me Fulmer was trying to let everybody know how hard it is to recruit here and what a great recruiter he must have been patting himself on the back, eventhough Dooley has all ready stated several times that this place with the all it offers is a easy sale. ..JMO...not Fulmer hater...

Sounded to me like Fulmer was commending Dooley for the job he did in such a short time, especially considering the lack of talent in TN. He was just saying he understands what it's like to have to travel a lot, and was letting Dooley know to be prepared for it.

We signed 2 players from Tennessee this year. Compare that to places like USC, Texas, and Florida who recruit nationally but get the majority of their recruits from in state. We will always be at a disadvantage because we have to convince the majority of our recruits to spurn their state school.

Calhoun is within 5 hours of Knoxville (Da'Ricks school), but I guarantee you more kids grow up there wanting to play for the dawgs than the Vols.

The distance between Knoxville and Calhoun is ten more miles than Calhoun and Athens ( 140 to 130 ). But your right, that is mutt country.

I totally agree man. I also think it was a tough pill to swallow for him to realize that he was sitting there talking to the head coach of the University of Tennessee when that was his title for soo many years. It had to be hard. It kind of bugged me because it just seems like he's not giving the slightest bit to acknowledge the fact that he's out and someone else is in and the world has moved on, but I do agree with your entire statement and I still have all the respect in the world for Coach Fulmer. He's the only era I've ever known to be honest. Besides this past year fluke, wouldn't call that much of an "era." However, like you I am very excited for the future and CDD.

Fulmer never once looked at Derek until the end. I thought that was somewhat unclassy. If you look a man in the eyes when you are speaking with him, it typically means you respect him, IMO.

When they first started the segment Fulmer was scribbling something down on piece of paper. I thought he was just reading whatever he had just been writing down.

I didn't take that interview in exactly the same way some of you did. Few things:

1) Phil clearly is still hurt over what happened. This is understandable and I think Dooley will eventually win him over, but in Phil being butthurt he came off as condescending and rude in a couple of areas.

2. Dooley is impressive in a lot of ways, and worrisome in others. We all know he is more of an organizer and manager than direct football guy, which is something the La Tech folks will tell you. He came into this situation short on time and long on needs, so he clearly let his staff take the ball and run with it when it comes to player evaluations and direct recruiting. He is very evasive when asked even the most innocuous questions. Is he just overly discrete? Does he lack confidence in his views? You can claim it is from the Saban tree, but Saban comes off as self assured and knowledgeable when he is being dismissive, whereas DD is always evasive. I will be very interested to see what happens with Chaney and LT after this year. I hope as he has time in the position Dooley's demeanor will change, but it worries me we may have an excellent manager who will be overly dependent on his assistants.

I watched the clip and it made me feel good to have a head coach with so much class. I also think in imo that those on here that still have a cobb up their butt about CPF should let it go. He was a very good coach, did things for UT that very few will ever do.
Give it a rest an focus on the new era of Tennessee football.
Seemed that CDD opened the door to CPF to help the university that he loves. CDD knows to embrace the past and traditions layed before him by past coaches and to build on them. Who better to extend an olive branch to than CPF ?
CDD is doing it all the right way....he had a good teacher!
I can't wait to see us on the field next season.
Good luck coach, GO VOLS

Lots of similarities in the way Fulmer and Dooley carry themselves and that is a very good thing but Dooley differs from Fulmer in that he seems to want to surround himself with the best coaches available.

Fulmer had Garner, Chavis(to an extent) and Cutcliffe who were great position recruiters, position coaches and coordinators but seemed afraid to hire the younger up and coming coaches. I'm already loving that Dooley seems to get the fact that you need a good mix to have a successful staff.

yada, yada, yada... It never ends trying to get excused for an unreasonable prejudice.

Dooley is a class act...but it trully would have been funny if when Fulmer asked him about DT's he would of responded with YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT ME WITH SOME...I'm just saying.

There are some good questions raised here about CDD. X knew what he wanted to do, be the best. Fewest penalties, most points, D schemes to keep the team in games and he wasn't coy about saying it. CDD wants to grow young men. Will his southern manners have him keeping games close to prove his gentility? I think these are legitimate questions.

That said I do think that he did not Mr. Fulmer off the hook in insisting that the University was bigger than any individual. Pulling Rogers might have been a hint of a killer instinct. There is a lot more that could be said. It should be an interesting year.
