I am just likely most everyone else on here wishing we could hire someone who has won at least 5 national titles, but consider this: If we hire the big name then that is all we have. We will not have the money to get the top assistants. We really can't afford both.

At Tennessee, the most important first step is recruiting. If we do not have the best assistants, do you think we are going to get the top recruits? As evidence, when we had Fulmer, was he allowed to get the very best? No. He had a limited budget, because his pay was so high.

At Tennessee, we probably are better off with the top assistants, and I think that is what the Kiffin hire showed us.

Now that we have the assistants on campus already, we should be good to go. The head coach is just window dressing. Not really, but you get the point.

So, let's support this guy and see what he can do. Sounds like a really sharp guy.

All-star coaching staff didn't help us too much last year.

Its better to shoot for the moon and miss by a mile, than aim for a mud puddle and hit dead center.

I agree totally he turned a 3-8 program into an 8-5. And their first bowl win in 30 years. He has NFL experience and coached under saban. Also I heard he is a good recruiter. I for one say we as Vol fans owe him a chance to show us and our respect.

2 (almost finished) good recuiting classes and 7-6 vs. 5-7, and also got rid of a lot of bad attitudes.

But my point is if you get the best coach in the world, at Tennessee, he still needs top-notch assistants to help him. With Fulmer we couldn't afford them. Do you think we could we some of the other expensive coaches out there?

Dooley was the recruiting coordinator under Saban at LSU when they pulled in a #1 and a #2 recruiting class in '02 and '03.

I'm not saying he would come here and he won't...

But I'd rather have Gruden for 6 mil/per year than Dooley for 2 mil/per year.

That has a hell of a lot to do more with Saban than Dooley.

So your point is worthless. I would rather have [put any name we cannot get] than Dooley.

He also is the AD at Tech if I read right; that meas he should know NCAA rules backwards and forwards and might give us a idea of some of the violations/crap that was going on at UT.

Why?

Not saying he isn't a good coach, but even on his best year (Superbowl win) he won 75% of the games.

He was never a head coach in College. Hasn't recruited since the mid 1991, and was never at a school where recruiting was even remotely close to what we do now.

For his NFL career he is .556.

Now, he has NFL experience and ties all over the place, but does he want to recruit? Is he any good at it?

If so, does that warrant NFL money for a college team?

Clawson was also considered a really sharp guy.

Whether or not he got the recruits because of Saban doesn't really matter. Saban doesn't hire idiots to be his recruiting coordinator. He doesn't hire bad coaches to be his recruiting coordinator. The fact that Saban and Muschamp speak so highly of him is good enough for me. I hate bama and Saban but he is a hell of a coach.

It wasn't his fault Tampa Bay could not get solid, quality young players. They had to sign a bunch of veterens year after year, and they never could develop talent.

Everyone knows Gruden is one of the hardest workers in the NFL. Recruiting won't be a problem & his staff would be impressive. I'm very sure.

Not only that, he can save this travesty short-term and long-term. Not only would he bring instant credibility to everyone & be an absolutley huge media get, he's in his mid-40's, has something to prove, and his family loves the state.

Having said all that, he is not coming. Alas.
