The Milgram reference is a stretch. It's also an example of research that was so unethical in its conduct that research review boards now populate every research university to ensure a Milgram study never occurs again.

I can back up Vercing a bit. My few trips to Canada have been filled with people "taking the opportunity" to tell me about how screwed up the US is when they learn I'm American.

I was in Vancouver with a Canadian friend of mine (who lives in the US for the last 20 years). Sports Centre came on a network (TSN maybe?). I remarked that the set, style, etc looked just liked ESPNs Sports Center and wondered if TSN was part of ESPN. My friend replied angrily "You know we have our own stuff up here. We don't get everything from America". Very defensive about an innocent question. Turns out I was right, it was an ESPN subsidiary.

I pro-Canada for sure but the bash America crap gets old.

I'm not sure why Americans get so much crap for national pride. National pride is in no way exclusive to America, and I see more Americans criticize their country/people than anyone else, to be honest.

I'll give you an anecdote in turn. I go to school in MN - (its colder than Ottawa btw). But, I can't tell you how many times I've been asked 'do you celebrate Mother's Day?' or 'Do you guys have Halloween?'.

I distinctly remember my parents being embarassed by some of the questions they were asked by some of my teammates parents. One parent didn't know we had our own currency. So I can see why a Canadian who is maybe faced with these questions on a consistent basis could be frustrated and respond with something less than intelligent.

Oh I know it's not everyone. I'm just saying I know where Vercing is coming from. It's happened enough to me to suggest it's more than just one idiot though. I just find it odd that people you don't even know want to talk to you about how F'd up they think the country you come from is then get defensive about there own country.

The questions above are honest (if uneducated) about your culture. They are different than asking why everyone murders each other in your country, telling you how dangerous and racist your country is, etc. etc. These are not "do you eat cheese curds there too?" type comments :)

I forgot to mention the greatest moment of my American life so far. I was one of many Canadians on the school swim team. One of these Canadians was from Saskatchewan - while I am from Ottawa (which is the distance between Syracuse and Helena). One of our teammates from Minneapolis asked me if we had gone to high school together. Assuming that because we were Canadian, that we must have known each other before coming to College.

Now I know that these events in no way paint a picture of the majority of America, but they do happen much more than they should.

Don't think it is an issue of not being PC toward WWII all that goes along with that, I have an issue with our coach being an idiot. This rant made Les Miles look like a great public speaker.

There have been endless post-Milgram experiments, and the results are nearly always the same. I know of nothing preventing Milgram experiments from taking place (obviously, you can't REALLY shock the people). In fact, I've seen them done on popular television. It's a milestone in behavioural theory.

Anh, not really. Most of the posts are back and forth gibberish.

There was the WhiteOut vs BPV set of comments.
The WhiteOut vs Tenatious D comments.
The WhiteOut vs Ulysees comments.
The WhiteOut vs everyone else comments.

Then someone ripped on Canada, and that started a whole new thing.

So, really, there have only be a few displeased people. It just gets buried in the randomness.
