Dooley on Pope

So he shouldn't call out players who don't make plays or aren't tough enough in his opinion? NFL coaches do it all the time, see Jeff Fisher. I have no problem with a coach calling players or coaches out, this is big boy football not some little league team. If the guys aren't tough enough to handle criticism they don't need to be playing ball.

I can't believe that people can handle coaches calling players out and what not.
I have to disagree with this. Making statements about players, correcting them and coaching them up should be done on the practice field and in the locker room. Singling out individual players in the media is unfair and demeaning. Now he may have been just referencing the media play Cody gets regarding the reality show comment but it could've been interpreted in a number of ways.

I just watched the press conference, and unless there's some drama that Cody Pope (NOT CANDY!) has been involved in and is reasonably well-known by media/others, then the only logical conclusion to draw is that Dooley was referring to drama in the context of the number the injuries Pope has suffered. If he's questionable to play, that means Vols don't have a starting center until it gets figured out.

Seems logical and appropriate for the situation and not likely that Dooley is going to embarras a player or himself in the media.

There seems to be haters here that need an agenda. Sad.

I just listened to the entire press conference. Coach Dooley did call out several players--all of which was deserved. He also mentioned several plays that were misplayed without naming names. One of the players he did not call out was Cody Pope; he was making a joke. He also cited examples of players who were giving their all like Tauren Poole. As Coach Dooley said last week, this is big boy ball. Play like you are supposed to play or deal with the criticism.

Let me suggest a few for you over the years....Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Phil Fulmer, Bobby Bowden, Jackie Sherrill, and those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head who I've heard PUBLICLY calling out different players and in Spurriers case, the Whole Team....aka..."we just dont play like for Florida Gators anymore"....anybody remember that one....OF COURSE COACHES CALL OUT THEIR TEAM IN THE MEDIA....Happens every day

Both of these say exactly how I feel.

Coach Dooley needs to prepare more for his press conferences. Was I the only 1 to catch his error when it first started? He said they have watched the film from the Florida game. Thought we played Oregon?:eek:lol:

I hope it's from watching film of Florida since Saturday night.

Dooley was joking and you could tell when he said it, leave it to the media to blow it up and act like they did not know he was joking.

As far as calling out players.....GOOOOOODDDDD

Some of these guys should be embarrassed by the way they played the 2nd half. THEY GAVE UP, they know it and we know it.

If I was the coach they would have been running Neyland stadium stairs right after the game.

"I WILL GIVE MY ALL FOR TENNESSEE TODAY"

If some of these kids do not want to do this, then you know what FIND players who will.

Man he is light years ahead of you!!!!!

Let me first say that i hope there is nothing wrong physically with Cody. However, the kid has been to the hospital earlier this week in practice and there was no diagnosis to the problem then nor a complete explanation, to my understanding, as to what problems he had during the ball game.

Furthermore, I know the old saying is to praise in public and counsel in private. I personally think Dooley was kidding like usual when he talked about the reality show statement.

Regardless, if the shoe fits then wear it! Cody needs to strap on his helmet, eat some damn beef jerky, and stay on the field with the rest of the players.

He's already focused on Florida. I like it.

My goodness, have we become that candy a$$ that we get our little feelings hurt when someone gets called out. Thats pathetic. Maybe that is the issue, we have become so thin skinned that our little feeling get hurt and sniff sniff we just do not want to play anymore. Whiny little pansies. If they are not playing up to what the team deserves than they should be called out in every way possible till they realize its not all about them its about the team. Get the girls off the team, we need players who play for the whole not for themselves.

I didn't focus in on either but both seemed to do OK Saturday. Do you think they played better than expected or did they scheme around them as a weakness?

I though line did fine in first half but I also think we saw something we could take advantage of. Looked like same play for Tauren time after time until Oregon figured out how to stop. I ahven't watch tape yet of game to see for sure but that was what I was thinking from stands.

I didn't see anything either did bad but maybe it is the checks they are supposed to do. They might screw those up on every play, we would never know.

This is a ridiculous thread, and I can't believe I just wasted 30 minutes of my life reading through all 8 pages. Not only does Pope need to toughen up, some of our fan base needs to as well.

Idiot....he was watching film since saturday night and probably only had 3 or 4 hours of sleep...that has nothing to do with being prepared or not.

He was clearly praising the players that did play well and competed hard and he called out the ones that didnt (he specifically said that Stocker needs to play better).

It's a culture change...get over it...if you play bad you get called out, if you play well you'll get recognized. If the fans dont show up and give their all...he's gonna call us out too!

The joke about the show was just a joke for the press cuz they think they are gods and have to know everything. If anything, we should have a thread on this site helping to name the show.

Well said and spot on. 10 posts? You need to contribute more often. We need the sanity.

I think Dooley has every right to call his players out if they are not preforming! He should also call out Matt Simms in my opinion for his bone headed decision making! Dooley has moxy...I like it!

“Players of the week were Tauren Poole, no surprise, Nick Reveiz, no surprise, and Daniel Lincoln again. Our only real injury situation right now is Cody Pope, who’s got a stinger, so he’s a day-to-day guy. I don’t know, maybe get Cody his own reality show. Got a lot of drama around Cody Pope. I don’t know what we’d call it. You all can think of something.

All those who criticize Dooley should walk a mile in his shoes and experience what he has to put up with concerning Pope. Then and only then would you know where he is coming from. Dooley does not strike me as one to pop off without a reason. He is very calculated with his comments.
