People on message boards generally aren't good at nuance. Everyone is either great at everything or terrible at everything.
Dooley was crap as a Head Coach, but it's not like he was bad at everything. I'd consider one of the best WR coaches in the country. And it's reasonable to believe that he might succeed as an OC. Certainly not automatic, but he understood offensive strategy and that was never his problem. His terrible recruiting, inability to motivate players, and overall poor program leadership skills were the issue.
Similar deal with Butch. Now everyone wants to believe he was bad at everything. He wasn't. He was a good recruiter. He was good at selling the program. I think Butch would do well as a Head Coach at an FCS program or another G5 type of program, but his weaknesses (particularly in regards to the strategy of the game) are really amplified at top-level P5 programs.
Even Saban has weaknesses. A lot of people think Saban is the "greatest X's and O's coach ever" but that's a big misnomer. Saban has been outcoached by Gus Malzahn and Dan Mullen numerous times, but Saban always has better talent. Saban's weaknesses in the X's and O's department were amplified in the NFL, but you don't see them as much in college, where his #1 recruiting classes and top-notch assistants hide his flaws.
But I do think there's a lot of truth to the idea that the most successful coaches understand their weaknesses and Saban understands his own well. Butch Jones, not so much. Derek Dooley, not so much.
good for the Tigers.
I always liked Dooley.
You gotta admit that except for some terrible breaks he would have made it here--in spite of flaws that were magnified after he left.
His first year, he walked off the field a winner in both the LSU and North C game only to have to go back on the field and lose. Thats never happened to anybody!
Bash him if you feel good about it, but I personally wish him success and hope some day he beats Nickie's ass.
His success at Missouri will be good for the SEC and I'm cheering for him!
Dooley fielded a pretty good offense here. Also he will be holding a grudge against us, and may drag out his skidmarked orange pants for some voodoo ceremony. But, being Dooley, he will find a way to lose.
Quite the resume'...
Fired from Tennessee for being a Loser but left with may Millions of $$$$ because of a moron AD...
Hired by his good friend as the Dallass Cowgirls WR coach but Fired by Jerry Jones because the WR's and Dez Bryant got worse and worse under Dools lack of coaching ad leadership, LOL!
OK, who's his friend at the U of Misery that's dumb enough to hire him as their OC?
Never a QB coach = FAIL
Never a OC = FAIL.
At least they'll remember to water the bamboo, LMAO!
Welcome back to the SEC Drools.
VFL...GBO!!!
and why do that it if offense wasnt mizzu's problem?
The boy with the famous last name's tenure in Big D was much like the ones in Louisiana and at Tennessee, a total bust. As a receivers coach he managed to turn a talent like Dez Bryant into a non-entity. He ought to go back to practicing law. Coaching sure ain't his bag.
