Dooley First Choice?

ESPN was saying all day long that Muschamp and Calhoun both said they were never contacted by anyone from:confused: Tennessee. Please dont tell me that MH set in front of the computer and waited to see who said they weren't interested and marked them off his list.

Pretty common. UT probably talked with representatives of these guys but never directly with them. Muschamp can say no one from UT ever talked to me since they talked to his agent.

Likewise, a formal offer may have never been made to any other coach - one was likely implied.

Technically, MH is probably telling the truth.

What actual other candidates did UT begin negotations with do you think?

Muschamp - yes
Calhoun - I dont think so.
Cutcliffe - probably approached by the Fulmer faction, but not officially
Whittingham - no
Smith - doubtful, UT wasnt going to match the Bears salary.

I think the coaching search placed feelers out for these guys but I bet most were never formally approached. Mostly this entire circus was manufactured by the local media try to out scoop each other.

This.

Hamilton wouldn't take the chance of making that statement if some paparazzo could show up with a picture making him a liar. That being said, I am sure there was a web of feelers and intermediaries between the university and several coaching names.

It is impossible for me to believe that a 3 year coach with a losing record from La Tech was the first, much less only, arrow in Hamilton's quiver.

Of course. Its like when 8 girls turn you down for prom, you always insist to the girl who finally says "Yes" that you wanted her all along.

bingo ding ding

whoever you get as a coach, you tell them they were the "first choice" to make them feel better

you can't tell someone they were your 5th or 8th choice...

The most obvious answer is usually the best and the obvious answer here is he is not telling the truth. To put out there that he looked at all the possible candidates that would be a good fit for our program and his first choice was Doug Dooley is beyond believability. To dance around on the head of a pin and imply that just because I spoke with a coaches representative and we could not come to an agreement means I never spoke to that coach is using semantics to lie. Regardless, in light of his lack of judgement and discernment in being able to see the kind of person Kiffin actually is, and now this asinine hire he needs to go as soon as possible.

Dooley was probably the only one offered the job by Mike Hamilton. A smart AD would have a third party to check out the other prospects. If the assurance was not there for a Muschamp, Gruden or others to come to UT, he would move on down the list and make the first offer to the one he Knows wants the job. With all that said, I think Dooley is a coach on the rise and will be here a long time winning SEC championships and a national title or more along the way.
