Dooley Can Recruit and Not A Legend In His Own Mind!!!

The recruting rankings would say otherwise

How? We are 7th, they are 8th. We know Richard Head is going to try to pull off a "huge signing day" but as of right now, Dooley has kept all the players he recruited that decided to stay, brought in others, and is possibly bringing in a better WR than the drama queen X wanted

Hood, Revis and Schofield (All '09 OL signees) will contribute in 2010. We still have depth issues but with Fulton, Pair, James, Stone (He will be a Vol), Green (He will be a Vol) you have to admit, the future looks bright.

It does indeed. Not trying to sound pesimistic, just looking at the fact that guys from last year, redshift frosh and this year are probably two year from contributing. There is the rare exception, but generally having to play even redshift frosh or sophs is generally a bad sign.

As much as I would like to send Kiffin to be a government test subject for some kind of new jungle pesticide, the man can recruit with the best of them. Dooley walked into a very bizarre situation and is well on his way to creating a very improbable outcome. In the very short time he has been here he has matched the rest of college football step for step in recruiting, and we are going to have a signing class that no one would have predicted. So screw those recruiting rankings and comparisons to USC. We are days away from pulling it out thanks to Dooley. Now if he can coach.....

the fat lady doesn't sing until next week, but so far given the circumstances he has outdone the carptbeagger.

it will be exciting to see what he can do with a full staff and full season.

Interesting analogy

CDD seems to know how to close the deal ....

but right now O linemen and D linemen would be better commodities than running backs and tight ends ...regardless of their stars .

The guys that will be starting on the O line next season could not get on the field ...yet the first string was composed of guys that did a reasonably good job but were sue not world beaters. facor in that walk-ons were a better option at times than the guys that will be starting for us this season !

The D line faded late in game ...especially lane in the season . immediate dept is needed , a real line rotation of at least 8 guys...or else you will get more of the same.

So while I am glad we have added another quarterback , another running back to a talented backfield , and a tightend to sit behind Stocker ...I would rather see 2 and 3 star linemen on both sides of the ball

At the risk of being bashed by the "posting police" for not having 1000 posts or a neat avatar (and I do love those), I wanted to weigh in to the discussion. I'm an old Vol - Neyland Scholar from the mid 70's, and have read GoVols.com and VolNation for some time. Being an old Tennessee fan, and having lived in (maybe being a "prisoner or war" in) Alabama for over 30 years,I can say I am pleasantly surprised by Coach Dooley. He has embraced our traditions and our heritage, and has done an outstanding job working toward putting together a great staff and recruiting class. And I believe he will make Vol fans proud of the way he approaches his job with class and integrity - and a toughness we need. Count me in as a full supportter of our new Coach. I believe we will be pleased with the new class, the disciplne he instills and eventually the results. Go Coach! Go Vols!
Well said! Welcome aboard the crazy train.

Couldn't have said it better. And the bad news is, unless one of the linemen (o or d) is really special, they just aren't going to be ready as freshmen. We are hurting for oline, and defensive tackle and three injuries last year showed us how thin our linebackers are . Four star tbs are great additions especially for a team still looking for impact players, but we can't line up four wideouts, four runningbacks, five defensive ends, and six DBS. We have some good players and some massive holes.

But recruiting rankings are not a good reflection if you do not fill team needs. 10 - 4 star running backs + 5 - 4 star QB's + 10 - 5 star DB's + 3 all star kicking specialists will usually develop into a team that gets curb stomped. :good!:

sounding like a 0% possibility. good post, anyway.

The bloggers won't matter much come September. The guy standing on the sidelines will be Derrick Dooley leading our beloved VOLS.We probably have 2 tough years ahead of us and i guess Derrick lost my number so i didn't get added to his staff but i'm sure he would appreciate anyones phone number who knows he is an SEC quality coach.

rivals has us at #10 currently.

remind me where we were ranked last year before BB committed?

and Scout currently has us @ 21....6th in SEC and in terms of quality we AGAIN are well behind Florida, BAMA & GA.

All the rankings are irrelevant. 4 star, 5 star, it's all relative. Well over half will never be heard from significantly after signing day. Grades, trouble, can't adjust to life at a large university, whatever. They are all a gamble. Out of any given "top 10" recruiting class exactly how many become household names? I defer to Boise State and TCU. Knowing what kind of system you run, and bringing the players for that system, them coaching them properly is what works.

He's making Lame look more irrelevant every day. Out recruiting him and a better person. We're better off with this guy than the flake.

Dooley is recruiting enough talent to salvage this season. Next year is the key to bring in some 5 star talent.

The one thing that impressed me most about Coach Dooley in my research about him seems to be the same thing that is winning over recruits - he's laying out a long term plan and vision for the program.

From the continual smoke I see, I also think I'm going to be pleased with our DC and O-line coach as well.

1) Scout is irrelevant
2) Not much difference in classes in the top ten....coaching is more important at that point.

1) Scout is irrelevant The TWO premier Recruiting services are Rival & Scout and I'm not the only one that shares that opinion....I give neither the edge.

College Football's Home On The Internet - Recruiting

2) Not much difference in classes in the top ten....coaching is more important at that point.

Don't be silly...sure there's a difference.

Just look @ UF this year 5-5*, 14-4*, 5-3* overall quality avg of 3.92 compared to our class of 0-5*, 8-4*, 12-3* with a quality avg of 3.23. You can't tell me there isn't a difference. Coaching is more important factor when the talent is near equal.

He can at the moment....give this time, I think the BS factor will wear thin...

I also agree, screw the rankings. CDD knows best what we need and can get in this short time period.

Where are all those Dooley bashers when he was hired? I can't seem to find anyone.

I'm a Tech, LSU and UT alum. so I actually have seen how Dooley recruits and his accomplishments. Dooley does not sell himself to the recruit he sells the university, football facilities and the football tradition. UT has all three. What Dooley brings to the table is a very smart person who can relate to the recruits parents (especially in GA b/c of last name).

Dooley is the type of coach who is hands on. He has to have total control of the program from the adminstrative and long term planning of the program but heavily relies on the asst. coaches to coach there players.

Recruiting will eventually become his fortay and his ability to attract not only recruits but quality asst. coaches who know that when they come too UT Dooley will provide them with high quality recruits allowing the asst coaches great opportunities to develop young talented men.

So summary............ Dooley will be one helluva recruiter with an extremely talented coaching staff that knows coaching at UT will be a privilege instead of a stepping stone to other top asst. coach positions.

I agree I think Dooley will be a good recruiter, he tripled the # of 3 star players at La Tech while he was there. I'm more concerned with his ability to install an offense and develop a game plan being an underdog, in terms of talent against Florida and Alabama.
