Dooley argument

....there is probably not a person on this site who is half way qualified to evaluate this coaching staff and this level of talent. Coaches coach, but can't play. They can instruct a player, but can't execute for him.

If you think that you are "put upon" as a UT football fan consider the coaching results of four other programs each of whom have three times the talent that Tennessee has. Florida State, Texas, Florida, So.Cal.....at his current talent level Dooley is out coaching all of these guys.....so who needs to be fired geniuses?

Our defense is significantly improved. Georgia rolled us with 41 a year ago and we cut that in half this year and weve regressed... id like to hear that logic

Yes you're right. Remind me again how many times UGA's WR were WIDE open running down the field only to get over thrown by Murray? Yes that defense was great Saturday esspecially with that GREAT pass rush...

OSU and MSU don't usually have an OOC schedule that consists mostly of away games and teams that they don't have much of a chance of beating. They are one of those teams SEC schools pay to be a whipping boy. In 2007, La. Tech had the best SOS of any team not in a BCS conference.

2007 - @Mississippi State, @LSU, @Cal, Boise St.
2008 - Mississippi State, @Kansas, @Army, @Boise St
2009 - @Auburnm @Navy, @LSU, Boise St

Yes and OSU, MSU play as easy conf schedule too. Nice try

nobody enjoys watching their favorite team lose, especially when that team is use to the sucess that we have had over the past.let me remind you, that during the sucess of those 90's the sec was soley dominated by two teams...florida and tennessee.never has there been more balance in the league there is now.can you look at any other conference in football and compare coaches salaries to that of the sec.im not taking anything away from the excellence of those teams we had during the 90's,i am simply proving we didnt have the competition week in,week out that we do now.for god sake, vanderbilt and kentucky actually make bowl games on occasions now.does anyone remember the days of 1-11 abd 0-12 vandy and kentucky's....dooley is working his butt off to right the ship, problem is so is the other 11 coaches in the sec.4 of which are national championship head coaches, give him time!!!go vols and give the tigers hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:peace2:

It seems like there is more of a “hiring Dooley” argument now than we had 2 years ago. I think we all were so eager to get past Kiffin and move on that we didn't really analyze the hire like we are now? I think some on here are seeing things that scare them. They aren't talent related they are coaching related.
And to be honest, you can’t look at anything in his past that would justify him being hired the head coach of a major SEC program. I hope I am proven wrong, but you don’t have to be a football Einstein to know crap when you see it. I mean coaching crap, not talent crap.

I will start by saying that I do not know if DD and his staff are good enough coaches to win in the SEC.

HOWEVER, I challenge you to find a problem cannot reasonably be explained by talent and experience problems. Those are NOT excuses at this point. They're reasons. If they are the "reasons" for problems next year or the next... then that falls on the coaches for not recruiting/developing a good roster.

I will give you a "for instance". UT's CB's let UGA's receivers get deep about 5 times with one going for a big gain. Coaching, right? Well, if LSU were the team that decided to shut down the run and go man to man on WR's... would those guys have been running free? Would Murray have had all day long for them to get deep? So basically Wilcox and Chavis could make the same coaching call... and one guy "look" brilliant while the other guy looks like he can't coach.

When UT has quality depth and experience then we can make that evaluation. If they fail to recruit and develop that kind of depth and experience then they would have failed the other side of the job.

But it is impossible with the current roster to draw ironclad, comprehensive conclusions about the coaching staff. You just don't have enough info to do it.

Name one person we offered $4 mill to?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

I wasn't in on the negotiations, I was just trying to make a point that UTWes wasn't either and has no idea what was discussed behind closed doors. My best guess would be that nobody was offered that amount of money due to the terms of Fulmer's buyout and etc.

Everyone knows the big mistake was made when Kiffin was hired....at that point the program was in decent shape and maybe a Brian Kelly could have been brought in and avoided all the BS that has transpired since.

florida has a lot more talent than UT and they got blown out 2 games in a row. UT will play lsu and alabama tougher than fla did.

Oh, the old elusive thing you guys always fail to mention is team chemistry, we didn't have a lot of seniors last year but we had a few in key spots, don't let this pro Fulmer history re-writer fool you into thinking we had more than we did. Truth be known, Fulmer aside from having a few good years with Majors talent and a run with some of the guys Coach Cut and others brought in around the Manning years we have not had much period. Dooley were it not for trying his hand at La Tech would be known as Saban's top assistant. If you ask me, that is more the problem than anything is our coaches coaching tree is starting to have to many ties to the Bama Tree. Something tellls me that say Dooley wins 10 or Moe games in a season, you and guys who think like you are still going to be trying your damnest to get rid of Dooley cause pure and simple he is not of the UT coaching Family Tree. It has nothing to do with Dooley or his qualifications just that he has not had a life time of drink the sap that flows out of the Vol nation tree. I got it now guys like UT Wes and Clay Travis, just don't like Dooley for his football roots being from elsewhere, so lets just ignore the petty short sighted fools.

You left out everyone else turned the job down. Funny how some leave little things like this out or their comment.

Be honest. If you had been told last year that at this point in the season we would be without Janzen, Hunter and Bray would you still feel we should be better than 3-2 at this point? I am as sick of borederline mediocrity as the next guy but you have to realize that we are a very thin team. My hopes ran high going into the season like many others but the fact is that things would have had to have went perfectly for the Vols to have had a chance to sniff eight or nine wins this year. This year it seems like if it can go wrong it has. The situation being what it is, you had better lower your hopes to maybe a possible six win season and a bowl game.

Wow..many guys that post here are dumb..what has Dooley done wrong..?? Who expected a better season with all the inexperience we have..?? We play in SEC and dooley inherited a pretty much high school team..give him time..we got great talent..and we are competing ..be with your team..be a true fan

Could not agree more with you. Much of UT's fan base needs to MAN UP and support this team and the coaching staff. How many of us would be "GIVING OUR ALL FOR TENNESSEE TODAY" on the football field, knowing and reading on here that a lot of the fan base has already thrown the towel in and quit on the team. Think about this if you were a student and a teacher was trying to teach something and get you to buy in to what they were teaching and all you heard was doubts of the teacher. How quickly would you buy in?

So in your eyes pointing out faults on your own team and expecting better makes one not support the team? Hmmmm I see. Thanks for your great insight.

i dont think his point is talking about pointing out faults and expecting better. its the constant bashing of the same things over and over again. people are beating a dead horse. If you dont like dooley, we get the point, if you do than awesome, but every week bad mouthing dooley and the team is ridiculous. wanting to get better is normal, but down talking the players and coaches is not going to change anything.

To The Dooley Haters:

To expect anyone to come in and magically restore the UT Football program from the shambles it was and to an extent still is, is foolish wishful thinking. As wiser heads than mine have pointed out before, it took years to drag this program down to the depths it is. It will take years to bring it back.

For your further edification know this; magic doesn't exist. Harry Potter is a modern day fiction, so is his magic wand. recent research indicates that while Merlin existed, the magical powers attributed to him are myths. However, if you buy into his connection to the contemporary but highly questionable Ancient Aliens speculation there might be some debate about his having access to extraterrestrial technology, though without proof that too is a myth. The Scarlet Witch and Mr. Mxyzptlk are comic book myths, and Loki is a Norse myth. So too is a magical coach who even if high profile and accepted the job could have turned the program around as quickly as you want it to be.

CDD knows and has said there is no magic way to do this. You people who can't or won't understand how far down this program was and to a point, still is can't or won't see how far we have to go to return to even semblance of our former glory. Instead of putting down our team and coaches, go toot for another team whether UTC, UF, or UA, just GO!

From the beginning, one could only reasonably expect to win 6 games this year. I thought there was a chance to steal a game and if things went way above our current level of talent and depth, we could steal two games. 7-5 or 8-4 is the very best any reasonable person should have expected from this team -- but 6-6 was the most likely.

We don't have the talent or the depth to compete at a high level. Dooley might be a great coach, or he may not be, but its not fair to judge him with the personnel we have now. Our D lost Janzen Jackson and there simply aren't enough play makers on that side of the ball. Our OLine has been disappointing, but they are still very young. We now have lost our Bray and Hunter. We just aren't that talented and we are still very young.

Lets all relax VolNation, give the man some time. We can't make judgment on his coaching ability this early. JJ, Bray, and Hunter are injured or gone. At full strength you all know we would be at worst 4-1 right now and people wouldn't be throwing Dooley under the bus...

Like Troy Fleming and Corey Larkins said on the radio the other day, these players have to start showing some fight. Yes, they all smile and laugh at Buffalo and Cincy, but when they face the slightest bit of adversity they crumble. That's the culture that Dooley is trying to change around Rocky Top and it's not going to happen over night, just deal with it.

Ppl mention his past all the time, but imagine if we hired the Head Coach at the Univ of San Diego with a popular last name? VolNation would've sh*t themselves. Harbaugh took over a 1-11 team and went 4-8, 5-7, 8-5, and 11-1 during his time at Stanford. Unfortunately for them he left for the league but it shows what happens when coaches get their players in the program and change the losing/lazy culture that was there before.... Now lets get rid of the negativity and beat LSU's a$$ this weekend!!! GBO!

My "great insight" is this, Dooley and staff is trying to change not only talent levels, but also a belief system, and the fix a situation caused by Kiffin. A SITUATION THAT STATES YOU CAN'T TRUST YOUR COACH CAUSE I'LL QUIT ON YOU. In essence He told these boys you're not good enough, I found something better so I'm gone. When we question if CDD should be here or not that gets in the mind of these kids and makes them question. All of us want to get better but questioning the authority will not make it happen.:salute::salute:

Yeah, getting beaten in the secondary and having a poor pass rush are definitely new problems. We certainly didn't have them all last year. And the DL gap control definitely hasn't improved at all.

say Dooley had never been hired back in 2010..who would TN have turned to for a second choice??? A prominent NFL coach wanting to go back to college again?? Im interested to hear what ppl think would have been the choice had DD not been selected..

The scariest thing is the regression of the offensive line and the running game in general with the same players and the continued coaching gaffes, like not having the play in on 3rd and 1 in the UGA game. That stuff is coaching, not talent. When you're outmanned you need your coaches to coach guys up, get the most out of their players and not commit mental errors that could affect the outcome of a game. That's the indictment for now. Maybe things will get noticeable better before the end of the season?

Agreed the O-line and Poole / Neal were an up an coming group ..with Poole having more big pops than anybody in the SEC .

Logic says that this group should improve and that a kid like Lane should only help the improvement

No so much ..they have regressed to the point of being among the worst in college football

UGA was a team that was ripe for the taking with their own youth and issues . The player match up was great for the Vols ...they just outcoached themselves and got outcoached by UGA

Again coaching .
Why does this defense not utilize blitz packages and creative coverage techniques ?
Certainly they must know that they are playing with 4 defensive ends and no true tackles and cannot bring any pressure.
I believe Chuck Smith left in part because Wilcox refused to rush more than 3 or 4 ...even though they were ineffective. Smith may have been an idiot in some ways ..but he was the only UT great and NFL Dlineman on the coaching staff.
I recall Monte blitzing from multiple positions and rolling coverages and taking chances ..I think he shut down bama , destroyed UGA and USC jr , handed Tebow one of his lowest outputs ever ..all with an inferior unit
-
Playing in a prevent for 4 quarters , refusing to adjust , refusing to take chances , why are we not stunting with smaller faster d-linemen ? putting corners in man coverage that dont have man coverage ability? ...this is all on the coaches

Domestic Silence you're an idiot...how can you expect DD or anyone for that matter to come into the most depleted football program in sec history and instantly start winning with players who were fresh as spring grass? Do you really think you know what you're talking about? Saban was 6-7 and 7-6 in his first two years at bama with good teams. It takes time, obviously you can't understand that though, you expect Dooley to win from the get go. "Yeah lets go 9-3 in dooleys first year and then win the sec in his second year" GET REAL
Posted via VolNation Mobile

How dare you! Just because DD had a losing record in the WAC and is .500 while at UT doesn't mean anything. Just because he's about to drop 4 games below .500 at UT doesn't mean anything.
Just because our O-line (all returning starters) has regressed.
Just because our running game has regressed.
Just because our defense has regressed.
None of that means anything and the guy that's responsible to make sure things get better and gets paid millions to do so is not to be challenged and how dare you, me or any fan question the coach.
