IF (that’s a big if), but if Les Miles leaves LSU for Michigan, Derek Dooley would certainty be near, or at the top, of LSU’s list of candidates to become the next head coach.

While some Tennessee fans would wonder why, remember that Dooley coached at LSU under Saban and at Louisiana Tech. He has a lot ties down there and folks at LSU think very highly of him.

Now, I have no idea whether he’d be interested in leaving Tennessee for LSU. It was brought to my attention soon after he was hired. I’ve gone back and forth over the past year on whether he’d even want to leave here after seeing what he has done here.

Make no mistake, Dooley (and his family) LOVE Tennessee. He has truly embraced the Volunteers tradition. Unlike Kiffin, Dooley understands what an honor it is to be the head coach here.

Hopefully, the Mad Hatter does the smart thing and stays at LSU. It would shock a lot of people if he did leave, but a lot of LSU fans would love for him to. Remember, Miles has a huge buyout at LSU. They can’t fire him anytime soon.

Given what’s happened to the Tennessee football program over the past three or four years, it’s warranted for fans to question the future of the program, but I’d be shocked if Miles leaves LSU, and I’d be more shocked if Dooley leaves Tennessee for LSU, or anywhere else for that matter, anytime soon.

Two other things:
Someone needs to ask Jimmy Hyams if any other Tennessee athlete was ever sent home for a “drug related incident” and allowed to return to a team. What an idiot! For once, Janzen’s issue was 100% a personal and family issue, NOT HIM. Hyams has no business claiming this. I will say, Janzen did get into a little trouble the night he was told of what the family problem was, but that is not why he was sent home. END OF STORY!

Also, was a bit surprised to see Justin Wilcox stay. Given a few things I’ve observed and heard over the past year or so, I thought he was going to Texas after hearing he was on their short-list. There has been tension between Wilcox and Chuck Smith this year, no need to hide that. Not going into details, but I’m hopeful both are on the staff next year. I will say, it was Smith’s first year as a true position coach, and his first coaching college kids at that. Losing Smith would be a really big loss. The guy is All Vol and is becoming a monster recruiter for Tennessee. THIS IS HIS DREAM JOB!

He would be the top candidate after all he knows the area well, is an LSU guy, and can recruit LA very well.

So if Miles does leave expect Dooley's phone to be the first to ring..

I for one am so sick of everyone worrying about who we may be losing just because some west coast idiot left in the middle of the night. This has been a very stable coaching job for many years before the idiot & what Dooley has in common with that man in my opinion is zero. G.B.O. & lets stop the negativity & be happy we gained another big ugly today though I wish it could have been under better circumstances.

Thanks for the info Zas. Think most reasonable fans already knew what you posted but nice to have it confirmed.

There was also no way Kiffin would leave for USC, the same could be said about Wylie.

I don't believe that for a second. The very minute I heard that Pete Carroll was leaving I was concerned about the security of our position.

Wylie on the other hand surprised me.

What? All Kiffin talked about was USC. He showed films of USC to his players. He said we were gonna be the USC of the east. I knew as soon as Carroll left that he was outta here. Dooley is more loyal

Ill bet if you go back and look there were at least hundreds of post on VN alone that said Lane will never leave..

We can agree about the moral part but dont think for a second that if they offer a boat load of cash Dooley wont walk. Part of the business.

Not siding with Kiffin but he probably used the USC of the east and all the film as a recruiting tool...

Been waiting for this thread...Miles may leave but Dooley would never do that...he has far too much class to make a move like that intraconference to a school that has been through what we have.

Some on here have claimed that Chuck is leaving after NSD. I hope it's not the case, but I would think that two grown men could learn to work with one another...

Yea but Lane is the opposite end of a horses head...his ego couldnt hold back on the USC move...personally glad he left. He'll be unemployed again in 3 years

I will say this, if Tennessee loses another HC for whatever reason, Mike Hamiliton should be fired that very day! At that point, it would be clear to me that he, Mike Hamilton, has not made a job in the Tennessee Athletic Department worth keeping.

With that said, I don't think Coach Dooley will leave. Coach Dooley is a smart man and will listen to offers to weigh his options, but in the end I think he sticks to his commitment.

I said this in the other Dooley to LSU thread, but every Vol fan should root for Miles staying at LSU and Richt staying at UGA. No coaches in the SEC waste elite talent like those two goons.

Could not agree more his attempt to get back to the league got him right where he belongs on probation and will eventually lead to unemployment.

He has to be smarter than that why would anyone take a job where they know they committed several violations.

Its like saying ok im here now punish me..

Look, I'm all for a coach making a dime. Make hay while the sun shines. But...if Dooley even entertains an offer from another SEC school, Mike Hamilton needs to throw him out on his ass. If Mike doesn't then the President should throw them both out. It should not be tolerated.

If someone offered to double your salary would you leave your job?

If I was going to a competitor within my region I'd expect to be fired once I got the offer. I'm not saying Dooley should turn it down. I'm saying if he begins negotiations with another SEC school he needs to be shown the door.
