Dooley and his way of recruiting

Crazy talk.

Bama last 5 classes before hiring Saban were ranked 22nd, 18th, 16th, 19th and 45th. Saban's last 4 recruiting class 9th, 4th, 2nd, and 1st.

UGA? Like I said it all matters.
Pretty sure it's more like 1st, 1st, 3rd, 1st.

Sabans nc qb, most of his ol and his defensive captain were not part of the 9th or 4th ranking, iirc.

He got Cody, Ingram, Dareus and Jones all in one class, as well as Mark Barron, Hightower and a few other starters. Sure he didn't recruit McElroy but he did recruit the Heisman winner...

Saban is Alabama's best coach since '92, at minimum. I'm not saying recruiting isn't important, but you wont convince me that Shula, price, franchione, etc could have won a NC 2 yrs ago with the same players. If you can get a top 20 class each year, you are a star rating or 2 from top ten, and you can compete if you get one bigtime player (tebow, cam) or a really good leader/coach.

True....9th & 4th are Scout's ranking for 2011 & 2010 Bama classes and Bama won it all in 2009 with significant contributions from the likes of Ingram, Richardson, Cody, Maze, Barron, McClain, Jones, Johnson out of the 2007/08/09 classes.

Personally, I am inclined to think that the overarching recruiting strategy which Dooley is employing now is not precisely the same one he will be using four years from now. When he inherited the program, the talent level was, as we all know, at a 30-year low, but depth was, if anything, even more severely depleted. Under those specific conditions, rebuilding depth, while amassing as much talent as possible under the circumstances, had to be his highest priority. Therefore, keeping academic washouts, or dropouts/ suspensions due to behavioral misconduct, to an absolute minimum is critically important if we are going to replenish SEC-caliber depth as quickly as possible. Emphasis on high-character guys, the VFL program, etc. become important adjuncts to this policy.

In the short term, rebuilding depth puts us in a position to be more competitive and that alone will help to improve the win-loss ledger. Adherence to the “process,” as Dooley describes Sabanesque methodology, will eventually begin to manifest itself in the form of additional victories and, when that comes, our chances to land those coveted out-of-state bluechippers will begin to improve. As we transition from this first phase of the recruiting master plan to the second, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dooley became willing to gamble a bit more on some of those character-risk 5-star recruits. In suggesting this, I am not implying that Dooley’s emphasis on character and integrity is disingenuous. However, even Bobby Bowden, who had the talent-rich state of Florida as his hunting ground, eventually concluded that he would have to overlook a lot of character flaws if he wanted to win national championships.

Alabama had great classes every year but didn't win until they got a coach. Goergia is still waiting.

Alabama was in about the same shape when Saban was hired as Tennessee was when Dooley was hired.

And sometimes all it takes is that one 5* guy to make all the difference. Just like Cam Newton did with Auburn last year. Again, I'd still like to see somebody who says these recruiting rankings are BS try to explain why the teams that the rankings say are getting the best players are also the ones winning the championships, yet they still aren't to be trusted. At some point you have to admit they offer a pretty accurate big picture of college football recruiting.

take a look at the 5* that flordia has had over the last three seasons and the season they had last season ,they didnt get much out of alot 5*.

Playing in the SEC isn't "a day at the beach" and sometimes the other guys 5* beat you.

3 of UF losses were to LSU, BAMA and FSU who according to Scout had better recruiting classes 3 of last 4 years than UF. USCe better classes 2 of last 3 years. The loss to MSU I'll give to Mullins and the blind squirrel & acorn theory.

You honestly believe Auburn was in as bad a shape when Chizik was hired?

They lost the Vanderbilt the year he was hired! Why u think they were 5-7 and fired their Offensive coordinator in the middle of the season. Not to mention they lost to Bama 36-0. Any coincidence that out of the top 12 players in in the state of Alabama that Saban signed all 12 in '08? Tubby was fired over recruiting, Saban didn't leave Auburn one player worth a squat.

Tubbs was fired because Lowder didn't like him and Franklin was a colossal flop as an OC.

Auburn had a good OL, DL, two good backs (Tate and Fannin) and a solid D.

Tennessee had 50 guys on the roster worth a scholarship.

We had the same record, we were in the same boat! The only difference is....

...we hired Kiffin. Mr. no experience himself.

USC had no depth. That's a problem that is only magnified when you're playing a no-huddle team like Oregon.
Which comes full circle back to my argument about getting players that are low attrition risks. I don't know where USC's players went but according to Rivals they should have been one of the 3 deepest, most talented teams in the country.

I see your point, but Oklahoma has built some pretty loaded rosters off of Texas's "scraps."
OU has long been the "2nd university" in Texas when it came to recruiting. Sometimes they're first. I've been told there are towns in Texas that are locked down for OU. They are a pretty unique situation.

I think we can use Georgia like they use Texas. In fact, that's what we've done when we've won big.
I've been saying that for awhile and really, really hope it happens. I think DD believes that and whoever hired him probably had his GA connections in mind too.

Some people hammer me for saying it but GA and SC are FAR more important to UT than FL is. Those two states are together almost equal to FL in terms of blue chip recruits and have a higher ratio vs population. Throw VA, MS, AL, OH, and NC in... and there may be more talent within 5 hours of K'ville than there is within 5 hours of Gainesville.

Still, FL players are likely to be rated higher in some cases simply because of the attention they get.

By no means am I saying that's the only way to do it, but I don't think we're a program that's necessarily doomed to the character approach. It'll be interesting to see how it works, though.

I think all SEC programs are probably doomed to that approach going forward... UT just more than most. The scholarship limitations are going to force programs to retain their players more than in the past. By simple math, if your attrition is too high... you won't keep a full roster.

Playing in the SEC isn't "a day at the beach" and sometimes the other guys 5* beat you.
And sometimes those 5* guys aren't as good as 3* guys. According to Rivals, UF has been loaded on O and getting better.... the whole while their production was falling off. Brantley was a 5* guy who played and developed behind Tebow.... and looked absolutely lost. How many 4/5* RB's have gone through UF? How long has it been since a UF RB gained 1000 yds in a season?

So now you are going to cherry pick the ranking that helps you make your point? Rivals is usually considered the svc of record. They've been the most accurate and most diligent over time. According to them, UF had two #1 classes in that 4 year period plus a #3 and a #11 that avg'd 3.94 stars with only 16 signees.

Production off? Sure it is off cause Brantley ain't Tebow. But we're talking a team that went 8-5 the season after winning a NC....a team who lost it best defense player in Spikes and one of the most dynamic QBs in Tebow, along with their top return man in James.....I think I'm on safe ground in saying one would expect some drop in production by UF with these guys leaving. As far as developing behind Tebow....different schemes for different QBs. Cam, if he had stayed, might have learned something from Timmy but not Brantley.

Over last few years Tebow's rushes surely negated any UF RB from gaining 1000....

But isn't that the whole point of the argument about having consistent top 5 classes? So that there aren't drop offs like that? If Rivals were the ironclad measure of the talent teams were getting then there's no way they go 8-5.

But the production dropped while Tebow was still there. IIRC, ppg dropped each year he was the starter.

All you are doing is trying to rationalize away the fact that you are wrong. If Rivals was as ironclad as some there suggest then there should have been a line of great players to back those guys up. There should have been no drop off.

Not by choice. Each of his last two years UF tried to get away from him running the ball as much as he did. Each year he was there they recruited and signed 4* RB's. In Tebow's four years UF signed a total of six 4* RB's plus the transfer from USC. If the rankings were tell all then surely one of those guys should have been able to take the load off of him.

Heaven forbid that other guys gets better or having LSU, Bama on your sked. Wonder how UF every managed back to back 13-1 seasons, a SEC & NC title

Ridiculous or maybe I was confused by all the plays drawn up for Tebow to have the ball.

What if we don't have a great recruiting class ? I'm not saying we won't, but if we don't and only go for key positions what's the harm? Everyone is crying, oh my we are last, omg we are falling apart.

Chill out !

We have a coach that looks at foreseeables' and isn't stupid. Take a breath and realize that if we don't have a great class, we have talent that will be here.

I wish I could take a poll of everyone who is freaking out about recruiting, and ask them what they saw after watching the movie 2012.

Real fans believe, bandwagoners go on popularity.

Go vols!!!!

What bandwagon is there to jump on?
