Don't take Memphis lightly

After last years homecoming game this one will not be overlooked. Kiffin needs this one.

This has to be a joke thread. If you look at the teams that Memphis has played it is laughable to think that Memphis State will EVER be in this game. Additionally, you should look at some of the garbage points that Memphis State has scored in both wins and losses. This is a pathetic excuse for a football team. I agree completely with Lane Kiffin, we NEED to play these guys every year. I'd love to have another in state guaranteed win every year.

My only concern at this game is that my face will be injured while I laugh all day at Tiger High.

What does it matter if some fans on an internet message board take a team too lightly? All that matter is that team doesn't get too overconfident.

It's just conversation. Why do you care if people bring it up or not, if it doesn't matter?

I just don't see what relevance it has to this weekend's game, and I wonder why any Vol fan would want to bring up that game.

It is relevant in that many of these same comments were made before that game. If we don't learn from our past losses, we are doomed to repeat them. Perhaps not this week, but it will happen again.

Could be. Our high school team has similar statistics to UT and have lost only one game this year.

Well, I guess if none of the variables had changed in the past 13 years, you would have a point. But this year's Memphis team is worse than their 1996 team, and this year's Tennessee team is much more competently coached than the team from 1996. The chance of Memphis beating Tennessee is right at -13%.

What the hell is up with negative percentages? It sounds reasonable the tigers have a 10% chance of winning.

The 96 Memphis team had a top five run defense. This year, not so much.

I agree even though I posted on an earlier date before USC that we should not overlook Memphis..They don't have a very good team this year.

I believe the beatdown shall be epic. Stephens gets playing time in the 4th quarter.

We should not give them hope. If we win the toss, we should take the ball and go score. If we get up by 14 points on these guys early its over. Their defense well its not very good. Their offense could give us a few problems early with all our new guys playing

When you look at the statistics for both teams, they both seem pretty evenly matched. This game is usually a blowout or a VERY close game. It was 17-16 in 99, 19-17 in 00', and 20-16 in 05'.

Their running back (Steele) rushes for 99 yards a game compared to Hardesty at 105. Their passing attack is what concerns me more than anything, especially with Janzen out and being replaced by Myles or Waggner. Both of their top receivers are sure to be top draft picks next year. Calhoun and Singleton are the top receivers in Memphis football history. Should be interesting to see what happens. If UT's secondary doesn't play well it could be a long day. Anybody agree with this?

Are you serious? I have many friends in memphis both young and old and all of them say that they can't remember a team this bad in a long time. One fella, said it equals the team that went 1-10 back in the 80's. He recounted that a local sportscaster comment that Memphis would be going to the Toilet Bowl that year and was later fired for the remark.

But speaking of stats you took no account in the level of competition.

Mississippi L 45-14
Middle Tennessee State L 31-14
Tennessee-Martin W 41-14
Marshall L 27-16
UCF L 32-14
UTEP W 35-20
Southern Miss L 36-16
East Carolina L 38-19

so they got thumped by everyone but the powerhouse UT Martin and UTEP.

This game will be way over by halftime.

Might be over by halftime, but underestimating anybody at any time is a huge mistake. I'll take the words from the Staff on this one to prove what I'm saying. Didn't say Tennessee will lose, I said don't take Memphis lightly due to their conference or their record this year.

"Linebackers coach Lance Thompson loudly told his players earlier this week to disregard Memphis's record and statistics.

"I don't care what their record is! This is a good football team!" Thompson yelled. "And the sooner y'all realize that, the better!"

Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said he was "shocked" at the Tigers' offensive skill on tape.

"I don't think people know that," Monte said. "I didn't know who these guys were until I watched them on film, and then I go and look at the last three games' stats, and ... wow. I couldn't believe their quarterback was that good. I really couldn't. I know everybody thinks I'm exaggerating, but I'm not. And their receivers are unbelievable.

"I don't care who we were playing, I would never tell our players, 'These guys aren't any good,' because I don't care who you're playing, you can get beat. But it's a fact that these guys are good."

Lane Kiffin made similar remarks earlier in the week, and he backed up his promise by putting the Vols through a particularly physical set of practices.

"Well this is a big game for us this week, an intrastate rivalry," Lane said. "We know they're going to come to play. I'd imagine this is the biggest game of the season for them, with a bunch of Tennessee kids on their roster. We don't have to look any further than the last time they came in here. They almost beat Tennessee. Go all the way back to a Peyton Manning-led team that Memphis was able to beat -- a really good Tennessee team.

"Our guys will be well aware of that. We'll make sure guys understand we need to continue to improve and get ready for a tough game."

I am taking Memphis State lightly. I fully expect a dominating blowout and for us to run up the score. Kiffin understands the importance of recruiting the Memphis region and we need to look impressive.

I would hate to be playing them last year.

I remember how sick I was the last time they beat us.....
