Last night in the UM-FSU game, the commentators noted that the Canes broke a couple of big plays on FSU's cover-2 defense. Can anyone explain to me what the counter to the cover-2 is? Thanks.

missed tackles and blown assignments. they didn't run much base cover 2 or it didn't look like it to me and blitzed a ton. they were in man when the lb for fsu got toasted by the rb that had split out wide, that was dumb.

All about mismatches. Specific example is the TD play where the Miami running back moved out to the left as a wide receiver. This created a mismatch as the LB had to come out in coverage. The result, the RB was open by 10 yards on the way to a TD. Smart OCs will notice this and plan plays to create these mismatches. This is one of the reasons for the smaller, faster LB in the Tampa 2. They can cover better than a larger LB such as the one for FSU.

Dunno, but I do know that FSU's secondary STINKS!

They found wide open areas between the zones.

This helps a bit.... Tampa 2 two defense Tampa Bay Two 2 Defense Cover 2

Though it should be noted that Monte has many formations, adjustments, blitzes and plenty of other things to do. This is just the basic base formation.

They talked about it some during the middle of the game Saturday against WKU, the one soft spot in it is right behind the LB's and in front of the safties

Typically the best rout to run against the cover 2 is the post-corner route. The corners are up close and the safeties are in the middle of the field. If the WR can sell the post route and the QB can hold the safety and hit the WR on the break, it is almost unstoppable. BTW, I hope Norm Chow isn't reading this because I would have just given him some insider information....

For the earlier comments about the FSU secondary and Miami taking advantage of their Cover 2 we can summarize the difference between the version they are running and in ours. 1) The man who perfected it is coaching our defense 2) We have Eric Berry. Any questions?

Thanks for posting, interesting website.

From what I gather, the Tampa 2 is basically a 4-3 cover 2 defense, with a suped up MLB covering a deep third.

You are correct...speedy LB's with a good game instincts are of choice in the Tampa 2. In traditional Cover 2, MLB doesn't have the responsibilities of the MLB in the Tampa 2. The MLB drops into coverage to make up for the space created by playing 2 deep safeties. FSU's defense against Miami was pure Cover 2...their MLBs aren't meant to drop into pass coverage. That's why you saw all the holes in their D and Miami had such success.

That and ZERO pass rush.
