Don't Be "That" Fan Base

CJH has done a great job getting Tennessee back in the picture.

We run a Top-5 offense every year. #1 in the SEC. JoAg is #1 QB in SEC by yards.

Throwing out an offensive genius bc we haven't had a defensive genius makes not sense.

Hire a top DC and throw NIL money at transfers on defense.

But I don't wanna be in a picture where FOUR LOSSES loom overhead.

Ready for a change of scenery

Heupel is good, but he is not a offensive genius. The high points per game come from scoring against terrible out of conference games. Repeat, he is good, not a genius
Sorry but you are wrong. Please see my post on the 2025 Year End Grade Card.

In SEC play alone (this is only in the eight SEC games each year), TN is #1 in both passing and scoring offense. Heupel is top three in almost all categories in all but last year (thanks, Nico). He is certainly and offensive genius.

How come that number one offense you speak of couldn't put up points against Florida or Vandy in the second half?

How come anytime the offense goes up by at least 7 it slows down?

How come the offense has bad clock management?

Its time to let Heupel go.

Nice guy. Turned it around for us. But he ain't winning a natty.

If he ain't winning a natty then why keep him?

A wise man once said "If you're not first you're last"

When did this fanbase get so soft? We used to demand excellence here at UT. We even put our foot down and ran off Schiano at one point.

Now look at us. We are fine getting blownout at home in year 5 by Vandy and it's all good because we went 8-4 which means we had a winning season and made a bowl.

Is this how it is now? If so then que the tiny violin and hand out the participation trophies.

Too late. We've been that fan base since I was a kid...as have other fan bases.

It may not be realistic but Vols fans are no different from fans at Clemson, LSU, Florida, Penn St, etc. Every school expects to win a NC ( again, this is not realistic, but it's how we live, why we buy tickets, why we are fans ) and when we don't fans get restless. Earlier in the season Dabo was fixing to be fired at Clemson . 2 Years ago folks were calling for Ryan Day's job cause he couldn't beat Michigan. Colorado already looking to move on from Coach Prime. Coaches today have a short shelf life, win or get replaced it seems

You’re right. The point is you either win or lose games. In 2 years no one will be able to ramble off meaningless offensive stats, but they will be able to tell you about that time Vandy and some punk QB cane into neyland and made everyone look stupid.
Dude, we were discussing Heupel's offensive coaching abilities, nothing more. Everything you're talking about has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation that we were having.

Now please, see yourself out.

Yes and you’re touting them like they win championships. Those abilities, if anything, hurt our defense more, if possible. The grown ups here realize it’s possible that one side of the ball affects the other. You not included.

See, we can score 40, but if they score 45 it was all really pointless. That’s how it works.

Leading the conference in scoring, hurts our defense?

I gotta say, that's one I've never heard before.

If you can’t see the that the way our offense operates hurts the other side of the ball, no one here can help you. TOP means something at this level.

Let me get the crayons out for you. The more you leave your defense on the field, the bigger chance they give up more pts. The old “defense wins championships” still applies. Heupel can be great at offense all he wants, but until he creates a scheme that is more beneficial to our defense we will never see any sort of title here.

So, let's see...

UGA's first drive against UT. 6 plays, 75 yards, 2:32. TD.
Or their first drive of the 2nd Qtr. 9 plays, 72 yards, 3:45. TD.
Was the defense already tired by the 2nd Qtr?

But that was UGA. Okay, so let's look at the Arkansas game. Opening drive. Arkansas. 9 plays, 75 yards, 4:50. TD.
2nd Qtr. Their 3rd possession. 11 plays, 75 yards, 5:59. TD.
Defense tired again in Q2?

Oh, almost forgot Vandy. 1st Qtr. Vandy's 2nd possession. 6 plays, 75 yards, 2:50. TD.
Or who can forget that clock-consuming 4 play, 78 yard TD drive that milked 2:18 off the clock. In the 2nd Qtr. Yep, another TD.

I can go on, and on, and on. I just picked 3 easy ones to find. For the UT defense in the 2025 season, TOP did not stand for "Time Of Possession", it stood for "Totally Out-Played".

Heupel's offensive scheme is solid. He needs a DC that knows how to get his unit off the field. Yes, defense wins championships.

When it actually plays defense.

I completely agree. Defense this year was going to be terrible, regardless of time on the field. And again, yes his offense puts up points, but it also hurts the defense when talking in terms of time on the field. Just because they were bad this year doesn’t make it not true.

The teams that are winning are playing “complimentary” football. Yes, I know everyone hates that word. That is hard to do if you have an offense that normally gets off the field quickly.

Nah man, it's just the defense.

One thing I’ve noticed from the past couple years is other P4 coaches don’t necessarily want the SEC meat grinder. They’re comfortable making $5-7 mil a year & not dealing with this. Majority of SEC coaches now have come from the G5 or assistant pool. Days of getting “ a proven winner at this level” are fading fast.

Did you also tout Guarantano's completion percentage when he was here as well?
