I hate seeing dogs living a life being tied out in a yard by themselves, and if you see one, you better stay away unless you know what you're doing because it doesn't take long for a dog living like that to begin to show personality disorders and excessive aggression. Dogs are social animals, pack animals, and that is the environment that makes them thrive.
All six of my dogs live in the house with us. They have a large fenced back yard to run and play in for their exercise, and the two that are loyal about coming when told to are allowed to go around the property off leash when we are working in the yard or something, but I would never tie a dog to a dog run and let them live a solitary life in the yard with no contact at all with other dogs. I feel sorry for them when I see dogs living like that.
