Behr, you said you think you know what triggered it. Please share the info.
Glad pup is ok now.
Prayers sent.Thought I would share this as an "informational" post.
Behr had a "grand mal seizure" Friday night. Scariest experience I've encountered since having him. It was fawked up.
Here is what I have learned from the experience, his vet and the internet.
It is more common than I had imagined. I had never even thought about it. It will give ZERO warning. He was perfectly normal and BAM! Scared the living shat out of me.
The only thing you can do is try to keep them from hurting themselves (don't let them jerk into anything like a pool or anything that can fall over on them) and keep a pillow or towel under their head. They can (he did) look like they are choking but they're not...keep your hands away from their mouth.
Time it. I was lucky and had just made a call, chupa grabbed the phone from across the lania and told my friend what was going on. By the time it all ended, 2 minutes and 12 seconds (give or take 15-20 seconds) had elapsed. As far as a seizure goes, anything under 5 minutes is good. If it last longer than 5 minutes, I'm told to get the dog to the pet ER immediately.
My vet said if you can even think about it, use your cell phone video to record it!
A typical grand mal seizure is preceded by a period of altered behavior, called the aura. During the aura dogs may be restless and anxious, cry out, demand affection, or seek seclusion. Behr did all of that except seek seclusion. It was crazy.
I asked the doc if he (Behr) experienced any pain or suffering, he said "not at all but he was as scared as you were and he will be sore for a couple of days".
Take them to the vet asap for a blood "work up". I took him that night. It started at 9:52 and was over at 9:55. He was at the vets at 10:17.
I hope and pray none of you have to go through that and if any of you already have, you know what I mean. If it does happen, be prepared to time it and make a log of everything in case it happens again.
He's not completely back to his normal self today, but he's all good.
I never do this but keep us in your thoughts. Lenny was with my wife at a friends house. She had put on a new collar and left the one with the name at home. He got out and my gut tells me the worst. I can't believe this is happening again. Pray forpeace for me. Really. I am livid with my wife. This could be 2 of my dogs dead from when I wasn't around to make sure everything was ok.
I am shellshocked right now and feel like tearing into a wall.
