Does Von Pearson only have 1 more year?

Pearson wouldn't be playing below his potential if he was targeted more. The man never drops a pass and always does something good with the ball in his hands.

I honestly think Dobbs struggles with finding the right recievers more than people think. The only time he throws to Pearson is on that God-awful lateral WR Screen that Bajakian loves so much. Which is the absolute worst play in college football, so naturally Bajakian runs it 90 times a game.
Actually its a good play it just isnt executed right. The other WR on that side MUST block his man or the play doesn't work and leads to people like you questioning play calling. If he makes the block all the WR has to do is make his man miss and its off to the races. It seems like every time only 1 of these things its executed properly. Either the blocking WR misses his block or the WR with the ball doesnt make his man miss. I have also seen Von run directly out of bounds too many timse instead of cutting it back inside.

They honestly grind the WR's too much, a lot of times they have to come down and block LB's, have to block on Safties in the box, they take a beating. Hopefully next year they will reconsider it.

Georgia Tech's WR's do all that and appear to hold up OK. I think TN's guys just ran into some bad luck....curse of the Dooley.

I believe he has 2 more years of eligibility. I think he's the one from JUCO that had 3 years left to play when he committed to us.

Far be it from me to question any college football coach...but, still, my eyes haven't lied to me all season. Are you referring to that infamous "bubble screen," where the QB shoots it out laterally to the far WR behind the scrimmage line? And then guys are supposed to block for that WR?

I think I have seen that play pay once all season...but it paid big. Crooms took the pass and split the two DBs before they knew he was gone...and he was gone after having just squeezed between them. Outran the secondary for six.

Other than that, I have seen that play get stuffed for either no gain or a loss enough times to last me a lifetime. Once, I think it was against MO, our receiver caught the pass and there was not a single UT blocker anywhere around him. He was surrounded by three defenders, who TFL'd him for 2 or 3 yds.

Again, I'm no coach and I trust our coaches implicitly...but, man, I just don't recall having seen that play work very well at all. And our coaches talk about consistency...that play seems to consistently be a yards-loser.

Yeah tell Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon etc about that wide receiver screen....Last year they beat our brains out with it because of lack of speed on defense etc....I agree...without the adequate line blocking in space and other blocks by TE's, other WR, etc. it is a putrid play....we use to hit it often with Clyde Duncan, Stallworth, even Cedric Wilson....but that was then...this is now...

VP has one more season left. He is a stud that was limited badly by the high ankle sprain. During fall camp and against Utah St he was ridiculous, then he was injured against Arkansas State while blocking. He wasn't healthy when he started playing again, but they needed him to play. He should look a lot better during the bowl game.

Dude is a playmaker but my gosh I wish they'd quit throwing the screen on his side. He really needs to work on blocking.

Yes I wanted to break my tv when Cooper scored on it from the 1st play. My gosh thats al Bama knows how to do.
But they can actually BLOCK. That's why it doesn't work for ours.

Von is one of the better blockers on the team at the WR position.

VP strength's are outrunning guys and making lightning quick cuts. I love watching what happens when he has the ball. He's one of my favorite players. I mean, how can you not root for the guy?

That being said...

His blocking skills are flat out awful. He needs to get in the weightroom and get some extra reps in.

Yeah this is the play I'm referring to. I can't stand it. I understand what's supposed to happen, and I know the WR is supposed to make his man miss, but IMO in the SEC DB's are trained on how to tackle. Even Vandy had that play blown up.

Honestly I don't like any play that says "for this to work you MUST make a defender miss." That's like a basketball play where the coach says "for this to work you're going to have to pull a double move and shake the defender out of his boots." It relies on the hope that the defender does his job poorly.

They aren't awful. For his size he blocks really well and doesn't mind doing it. He isn't Croom but he also doesn't have Croom's size. His blocking wasn't what it needed to be towards the end of the season but that is mostly him not being healthy. When he was healthy he was getting after it pretty well in the blocking game.

:lolabove: All of which means it's a crappy play.

I think it's our system as well. Dobbs get 20 carries.

Dobbs tends to call his own number on a lot of the read option plays. That has nothing to do with the system, just the QB making the read he wants to. There are several times a game he just seems to decide he wants to keep the ball whether it is the correct read or not.

He suffered the high ankle sprain that derailed his season while blocking downfield inside the 5 yardline. He had the defender completely tied up and another player rolled up the outside of his leg from his blindside. He blocked very well up to that point. He did lose a little of that aggressiveness, but I think he was looking over his shoulder after he got back.

A bunch of people expected him to be the next cordarelle patterson. Guys like him just dont come around every year. Shouldnt set standards so high on players. Also we had a much better line and quarterback when patterson was here. I think if von had a nfl line and bray as quarterback, then he would be a stud. I could be wrong but if the player cant get the ball, then how is he suppose to succeed?

That's a really good point. Regardless, blocking needs to be his number 1 focus during the offseason.
