Rucker: Is defense-first really the best fit for Tennessee Vols football in this coaching search?

Full disclosure, I mostly wanted to vent about the state of “journalism” today. First two paragraphs:

And the last time Fumer reached the pinnacle of the chaos ladder, he took the head-coaching position from legend Johnny Majors and ushered in one of the program’s most dominant stretches.

Now Fulmer has again reach the apex of that chaos ladder, usurping the athletic department throne from John Currie in the middle of a search for a new head football coach, and the hope among Tennessee fans is that history repeats itself and the Vols start looking like the Vols again.

For the love of a third grade education, you don’t need to have a Rhodes scholar proof your stuff, but ask someone to do it, Rucker. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Not what Fulmer said. Specifically said he wanted a coach that runs a certain type of offense.

I say we screw it with this head coach thing and have two co-head coaches, one the offensive coordinator and the other defensive coordinator. That way we can pay them both about $3 million a piece and save a bunch of money not paying a head coach. Each would have total control and be held responsible for calling and running their own plays and schemes.

This is why interviewing 3 SEC DCs makes no sense so late in the game. Especially when none have been mentioned with other job openings

We’re not going to beat Saban and mini-Saban at their own game with inferior recruits.

Offensive coaches:

Malzon-success
Mullen- success
Sumlin-fired
JM- fired
Jones-fired

Defensive coachs:
Smart-rock start
Saban-legend
Muschamp-doing well
Stoops-doing well
Odom-doing well
Mason- doing OK for Vandy
BB-fired

Odds are much Better for defensive coaches to be successful in the SEC

You have to have a good D in the SEC if you want to compete. You have to be able to score obviously but defense wins championships as the old saying goes.

Yes, definitely want a defensive minded HC.. One of the reasons I was high on Patterson..

Pruitt HC and Tee OC.. Those two would recruit very well I think..

Does it though?

Code:
2014–15 Ohio State	42-20 Oregon
2015–16 Alabama 45-40 Clemson
2016–17 Clemson 35-31 Alabama

Those are the 3 Playoff Championship games. Do those look like defensive struggles to you?

Odds are better for offensive coaches to win SEC titles. Since 1992 when the SEC became a super conference, offensive coaches hold a 14-12 edge:

Spurrier 5x
Fulmer 2x
Richt 2x
Meyer 2x
Miles 2x
Malzahn 1x

Vs.

Saban 7x
Smart 1x
Chizik 1x
Stallings 1x
Dubose 1x
Tuberville 1x

Yet we saw this season that your D can be handling the other team, but if your O keeps goin 3 and out and putting your D right back out there ... they wear down.

Exactly right! This is why bringing in a game changer like Leach is the best path to success. Doesn't have to be Leach (though, ahem, he has already said yes), but someone of that ilk (Briles, Frost, Leach, maybe a Petrino-type) who can challenge and stress those defenses. Mimicking Alabama's and Georgia's path to success will fail because they will out-recruit and likely out-coach us in that type of football. Sadly, Fulmer can't figure this out.

We scored 40 points a game with Dooley here , how’d that work out ,

Ask Bama Georgia Auburn. U need Defense

Yeah few people give credit to jim Chaney and mike debord for how good their offenses were statistically.

But bottom line is defense wins championships, that will never change.

Good post and info but this conference is different today than before imo. Really want to look at last 10 years or so
