Does Tennessee Need A Dedicated QB Coach?

I don't know, but pretty obvious from the Butch Jones years that having *a* QB Coach is important.

Still completely insane to me that we didn't have a real QB coach in 2015 and 2016. We had a GA with limited experience who was our de facto QB coach; but it was sort of an after-thought. And somehow, we had 3 O-line coaches, and still had a terrible O-line.

Someone alluded to the fact that an oc and qb coach is not optimal. It seems to me that the combination would be a perfect fit.The oc could coach up the qb with exactly what he wants to accomplish with each call, and show the qb the steps, drop needed to make the play work.I am hoping for Freeze as my first choice;but,Chip Lindsey would be great a
so.For those who said Lindsey wasn't good,he was only allowed to call Gus's plays. No freedom on his own.Just like Shoop, Debord with B..tch.

Folks often over estimate what a coach can and cannot do.....better players are easier to coach, period! You can only “coach” so much, wouldn’t matter if we had 100 coaches the last few years, need more talent.

I agree on most things but I have a very different outlook on what many say about Butch including being limited. Debord’s offense set program records. Shoop’s defense was the problem and maybe where Butch needed to butt out. Nonetheless, let’s hope if we get Lindsey that talk is correct.

I have no problems with an OC being the QB coach. As long as he is a QB guy and has had a history of coaching/developing QB's. The OC and QB should work closely together in my opinion. It all boils down to the coach/qb relationship. It doesn't matter if the coach is the OC or not, if the QB doesn't receive the instruction properly it's not going to work. I have no inside info whatsoever, but the Helton/JG pairing didn't work. For whatever reason, there were things (protections etc) that JG never was able to understand. Helton has been a good QB coach in the past. He was a finalist for the QB coach of the year at WKU and won it when he had Darnold. This OC hire is HUGE!!!!
