Does Tennessee get exposed this weekend?

I think they've been satisfactory for the Vols games this year up until the SC game last week. That crew must of hit the booze and strippers alittle too much the night before...

Oh and before someone points out J Russells passing efficiency I don't buy it. He is not throwing for much more than a 5 yard slant most of the time. His % is high because the type of passes they call.
Russell averages 14.15 yards per completion. Ainge averages 13.25.

It's like this. We've already been exposed alot this season, and we're winning. AF exposed our inability to stop the run. Others have done so since. You want to worry about running games, worry about stopping ARK and not LSU. UGA could have exposed us, but chose to combust internally instead. The Gators tried to whip us, and only squeaked out a one pointer. LSU has dropped 2. At best, they are on par with us. Earlier in hte season, they were scarier. Now, they are just a tough opponent who always plays us tougher than they do anyone esle. If we play our game, the way we did against UGA, and Carolina, we'll do fine. This game certainly can go either way. I'm not looking for either to be crying behind the woodshed.

I hope I am wrong, but I could see LSU doing a job on the Vols this weekend.

Vol Nation is pretty happy with the current situation because of last year's situation, but have we had our glasses tinted too orange?

So far all I have seen is a great passing game combined with an average defense and a disgusting run offense. I have seen threads on here about "if we win out" and other similar topics. Have we gotten a little drunk on these close wins.

I see a potential beat down coming from LSU, hope I am wrong. Anyone else think this?

1. Just like Florida is for Tennessee, LSU has a mental thing with Tennessee. Mental breakdowns are responsible for LSU's big losses this year. If the Vols get out to an early lead, LSU will cave.

2. Defense is average against team's with mobile quarterbacks. Defense has been very impressive against pocket passing teams. LSU is in trouble this week against the Vols defense.

3. You are right about the run offense. However, its against stacked lines. If Ainge is off, the whole offense is off because other teams have decided to stack the line of scrimmage and stop the run at all costs. Also, Cutcliffe has adjusted the past 2 weeks by getting the running backs the ball more in the passing game. Against Alabama Foster had 16 touches for 76 yards and a TD. Against South Carolina, Foster had 15 touches for 50 yards and another TD while Hardesty had 9 touches for 47 yards.

4. If the Vols lose to LSU, it will be close. As bad as the 5-6 Vols were last season, they were within 7 pts of every opponent they lost to in the 4th quarter.

Yeah, that "mental thing" really messed them up in 2000 and the 2001 SEC Championship Game.

I didn't watch the LSU Auburn game, can someone fill me in on how they passed for 269 yards and didn't get in the end zone? They didn't have any turnovers that game either. Granted they did have 42 rushing yards but we had -11 against Florida and 231 passing and still had 20 points.

They must have had some crappy field posistion.
LSU has had crappy field position all year. If you want to find an LSU weakness to exploit it is field position. LSU is #117 out of 119 Division I-A schools in punt return yardage defense and #101 in net punting.

You forgot to mention LSU's wins in 1988, 1974 and 1933. There, now we've mentioned the huge total of 5 losses to LSU since the 2 teams began playing in 1925.

I'm sure several of those players from the '74 game will be playing on Saturday night. Hopefully, UT can counter by getting some of the players from the upset of LSU in the late '50s on the field.

To me, this has '99 Arkansas game written all over it. I'm sure LSU feels like they completely blew the game last year. I wouldn't count on them coming out and making a lot of mistakes. Quite the opposite.

hatvol,

Are you an actual Tennessee Volunteers fan? It seems to me like you never have anything good to say about the Vols.

I don't think this game will be a beatdown for either team. Also, about Arkansas, we will take them behind the woodshed. They're a one dimensional team. Stop (or at least slow down) the Arky running game and we win. If Mitch Mustain throws 2 INTs against ULL, then we count on him to do even worse against us.

No, I received two degrees from UT, donate substantial sums to the Athletic Department, and travel to Knoxville from South Florida for home games because I hate UT.

(wow) How in the hell can you like Miami? You have lots of football knowledge and good opinions. You just seem to smart to be a Miami fan.

I admire and respect excellence. The "U" has been the gold standard in college football for over twenty years. Also, I like programs that have confidence and are uninhibited in showing it.

I respect that, but i would think you would have to include schools like Mich. for attitude and history.

The competition closed the gap some the last couple of weeks. I'm not sure what Alabama might have exposed on defense but UT hasn't been as dominating.

LSU is much more talented then either Alabama or SC. Arkansas has very good young players developing.

Its hard to stay on top when everyone is gunning for you. Since UT cracked the top 10 teams have elevated their game.

Have you seen the 2006 Volunteer football team? We are the definition of a one dimensional team.

It's all about matchups boy and girls. Great teams can meet teams and just not match up well.

Let's look at some SEC games this year. Auburn loses to Arkansas, then goes out and beats Florida. Auburn survived LSU, but Florida goes out and smacks LSU around. Auburn's defense is a fast team, linebackers flying around with speed. Arkansas is a big team, who just lined up and played smashmout football with Auburn, and ran right at them. Florida's offense is a fast team, which played right into Auburn's hands; they were fast too so they could hang with them. LSU on the other hand has a great big front seven; Florida with their speed, spreaded them out and threw around them.

As for Tennessee, it will be an interesting game. I think our weakness is running the ball and stopping the run. I think we can throw the ball on LSU, but forget running the ball. I think our defense will survive against LSU's offense, just enough for us to win. Our big test will be against Arkansas, who have big boys up front and run the ball well. I think we match up better against LSU than Arkansas. If we can't stop the run for either team, they'll control the ball/clock, and keep our offense on the sideline. The more we get teh ball on offense, teh better we are. But we even saw in the SC game, that long drives by the opposing team chews up clock and keeps our offense off the field.

I think this game will be another tight one. If our defense can make some key stops and we don't turn the ball over, we'll win. If we give our offense enough chances, we'll score.

Why would it be put on his shoulders, I am sure the Arkansas coaches have seen our run defense.
Which is why Vol_4_life originally said if the Vols can get out and score some points early, that would put the game in Mustain's hands as he would have to pass instead of step back and hand off.

LSU is ranked #5 nationally against the pass and #7 nationally against the run. I wouldn't bet the house on passing for big yardage on LSU.

But people are ripping off big punt and kick returns on LSU. Hard to figure, LSU plays a lot of starters on special teams.

Without the threat of a running game, it will be interesting to see what happens. This will be the best passing team that LSU has seen thus far this year.

With the way UT has been just getting by recently, I am not counting on anything. However, the potential is certainly there.
