For the record, I complained ad nauseam about Pruitt. He was awful. So glad he's gone.
That said, do we have to complain about everything? Every single coach mentioned here in the past week...people complained about. Something was wrong with every single POSSIBLE hire.
Look, the fact is that Tennessee is not a top job right now, no matter how delusional our fanbase is. Despite the fact that most of our fans think it's a top 10 college job - it isn't. I'm not sure it's even a top 25 job right now, given the possible/likely NCAA sanctions.
If there was a top 10 or 15 coach out there that WANTED this job (and the possible $6-$8 million/year that came along with it), don't you think he would have reached out to Danny White and told him he would take it? Other coaches right now think Tennessee is toxic, and quite honestly, laugh at the fact that we think this job is:
a. attractive, and
b. way better than it actually is
We don't really have a choice but to trust Danny White. By all accounts, he's wonderful...and one of the top couple of ADs in the country.
Keep in mind, White hired Josh Heupel not once, but twice. He must like him.
I love the Vols. But damn, I get so tired of our fanbase complaining about literally everything. Just be happy we got rid of Fulmer and Pruitt, and let's give White and Heupel a chance to build something. Lord knows we've fallen so far that there's plenty to (re)build. Maybe Heupel can...maybe he can't...but this head coaching job isn't nearly as attractive as it used to be, and I'm willing to back the guy to give him a chance.
Nobody else wanted it, even for insane money. I hope Heupel can restore some of our past glory, and our fanbase can work on improving the awful perception that we currently have (outside of the state of Tennessee) about not being so dang negative about literally everything.
